For a truly home-away-from-home experience and the ultimate in space and privacy, consider a vacation beach house rental during your next trip to the Caribbean or other beach locale as an alternative to booking a room at a crowded tourist hotel. Many hotels provide great accommodations, but nothing beats the spacious and quiet seclusion of a private villa or rental.

Whether seeking a romantic get-a-way or fun in the sun for the whole family, beach vacation rentals provide many options. Below are some factors to help you decide if a vacation beach house might be right for your next holiday.

Vacation Beach House Rental vs. Booking a Hotel Room

At a hotel... even a small one... you are sharing everything with lots of other people... strangers. More people equals more noise and commotion, which may not be as relaxing as you'd hoped. Often you have to set your alarm to get a palapa on the beach or that perfect pool lounger spot. Private vacation rentals often have their own beach and pool reserved for your use only.

True, hotels offer activities and services that you and your family may like, but many private rentals come with things like bicycles, snorkeling gear and games. Spa service will often come to your rental and certainly, you can still partake of all the local attractions.

Of course, it's nice to have a restaurant on the premise like most hotels. However, many people like to keep snacks and drinks in their own fridge, be able to cook some meals or even have a private chef cook for them.

Typically the biggest difference concerns personal space. Private rentals almost always offer more space, privacy, peace and quiet both inside the residence and its surrounding outdoor environment.

Types of Vacation Rentals

Once you decide a beach vacation rental is for you, you'll need to decide what type of property you want. In most tourist locations, you'll find three options: private homes, apartments or condos, and condotels. That last option refers to condos that have been built at hotels and include use of the hotel facilities.

Private homes will usually provide the most room and will cost the most, but that can vary depending on location and the degree of luxury offered by the property.

Amenities

The amenities offered with your vacation beach house rental will vary depending on the property owners. You can expect all to be fully furnished and most provide things like, plates, utensils, coffee makers, blenders, etc., along with maid service. Some properties have private beaches and pools. Some properties even have private maids and chefs and come with the use of a car.

How To Rent The Perfect Vacation Beach House

Start planning your Caribbean vacation by first searching for that perfect beach house rental. You can either go through a direct management firm, which handles multiple properties or through the individual owner.

Unless the individual has been renting the property for a long time, you'll have a more secure and professional experience if you work with a direct management company; however, many owners are very attentive and professional and can give you the most accurate details regarding the property.

Because these properties are booked up quickly, you'll need to schedule your reservations as far in advance as possible. Make sure to ask about the cancellation policy for the property in case something occurs that interferes with your travel plans.

To secure your reservation, you will normally be asked to make a deposit equal to half the rental rate via your credit card with the balance usually due at some point prior to your arrival date. Some properties require a damage deposit in addition to the rental rate that will be returned after you have vacated.

Turks & Caicos: A Great Beach House Destination

Located in the West Indies not far from the Bahamas, the Turks & Caicos Islands as a group are one of the least developed islands in the Caribbean. Providenciales has been discovered with recent growth, yet remains a wonderful vacation destination offering many vacation beach house rentals.

Turks and Caicos villa rentals can even be found on the more secluded sparsely populated islands where you'll find deserted white sand beaches with views of crystal clear turquoise water. That beautiful water is perfect for fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming with dolphins.

Of course, the beaches are fabulous. Grace Bay on Provo is consistently rated as one of the ten best in the world and many other equally stunning beaches exist on surrounding islands. Hiking, biking, whale and bird-watching, especially the abundant flamingos, are popular activities.

Seasons/Pricing

If you're interested in renting a vacation beach house on the Turks & Caicos Islands, then be aware that the most popular season for travelers is between December and April with the Christmas holiday period representing the peak season.

The best time for beach house rental on the islands is from May to November when the costs are much lower. They range from $1,500 to $16,000 per week during the low season compared to $3,500 to $35,000 per week during the peak season.

Other Caribbean islands are similar, but will vary some. Certainly, there's a wide range of enticing options to choose from, but again... start planning now, book your vacation beach house rental early and get ready for a fun and relaxing get-a-way!

Concrete Countertops: The New Shape of Style In Home Design

Concrete is nothing new in home design. It's been serving as driveways, patios and pool surrounds for decades. But today concrete countertops are debuting on the inside of many homes with creative, elegant and whimsical new designs not possible with any other surface.

Concrete countertops are gracing the pages of magazines and starring in home improvement shows following and fueling a rise in popularity of this versatile surface. Cement has one unique advantage over other countertop materials in that it can be custom molded into virtually any shape, size or design you want.

It can be stained in a rainbow of colors. It can also be dyed, tinted, stamped and have unique designs acid-etched into its surface. Also, you can embed fun objects, momentos or even lights to make a personalized piece of functional art! Imagination seems to be the only limitation. Some even looks like wood. By sawing lines in the concrete, you can make it look like tile. And you can incorporate a sink of any size with a custom drain board or any other design feature you care to create.

Just like tile and every other surface, concrete countertops do need some maintenance. Although a durable countertop, concrete needs to be sealed initially and waxed periodically to resist staining and moisture. It can be washed, polished and buffed to maintain its shine and it cleans up easily with soap and water or mild cleaners.

Cutting is not recommended or it will scratch, but you should use a cutting board with any surface. Concrete is heat resistant and stains aren't much a problem if you seal and wax as recommended by your installer.

Designers consider cement countertops to be kind of a specialty item with a very contemporary look... that is one of the drawbacks with many homeowners. True, it is very distinctive, yet it can be made to blend well with a variety of designs and decoration themes.

Another possible criticism is that colors cannot be exactly matched to say... a paint color. You can get close, but the finished color may be slightly different. Also, concrete countertop colors will get lighter a few weeks after installation and tend to yellow over time.

Concrete countertops need to be installed by someone who knows what they are doing. In fact, the majority of the cost of concrete countertops comes from the skill and labor required to install. Expect to pay about as much as granite and possibly more depending on how complex your design is.

Other countertops may be better all-around surfaces, but concrete countertops are still durable and no other surface can offer the creative freedom available with concrete. So, if you really want to do something different with your design, explore the unique qualities of concrete.

Granite countertops have been the most popular choice for kitchens and bathrooms for years now, but it wasn't always that way. Not too long ago granite was somewhat rare and expensive since it was so hard to quarry and cut. Now that effective techniques and machinery has been developed, the price of granite has come way down and the availability has skyrocketed.

Today granite is imported to the United States from quarries around the world. With over 2700 varieties of granite, there is seemingly no end to your choices for color and pattern. But not all granite is the same.

Advantages Of Granite Countertops

In general, granite is nature's most perfect countertop. It's been created over millions of years and as a consequence has a hard, generally impervious surface. You can drop things on it, spill stuff on it, set hot pans and cut on granite without damaging it.

Some of these activities are not recommended because in extreme circumstance you could cause damage, but the risk is low. Granite is very tough and durable. However, many stones with similar qualities are sold as granite, but are not true geological granite.

They are not "fake" granite. Scientifically speaking, they simply are not classified as granite, however in your kitchen they perform very similar to granite... some are even better than granite. So, it's important to remember that performance can vary with different colors or species of granite.

For instance, some granite counter tops should be sealed to retard staining, but many granite varieties are naturally non-porous, nearly impossible to stain and don't need sealing at all. Of course, these dense varieties are the best countertop for your kitchen.

Unfortunately, many designers, sales people and industry professionals fail to provide the complete information you need to make the best choice. Either they assume all granite is the same or just don't know how to tell the difference.

You can perform simple tests to determine if the granite you like is a good choice. (Find more information on testing at the website below.)

Dis-advantages To Granite

You will get a tiny seam where the different slabs of granite have been placed together. Most likely you will also have a break in the color and pattern due to the seam. However, in most cases, the break can be minimized with good planning by the fabricator when cutting the slab and matching similar sections during installation.

Proper installation and support is paramount. Installing granite is not a do-it-yourself job. Granite is very hard, but if not handled, installed or supported properly, cracks can develop.

You must seal many types of granite as soon as it is installed in order to avoid staining. You will also have to reseal it on a regular basis every 3 to 5 years. This is not a difficult or complicated process and it only takes about an hour. So... you must maintain the surface, but that is true with any surface and no surface is perfect.

Just remember.... you can test your granite samples to avoid ones that are too porous for the kitchen (yes, there are a few) and choose a granite that doesn't need to be sealed or one that won't need sealing but every 3-5 years.

TIP: Go to the granite importer's warehouse with your designer or fabricator and pick out the exact slab that you want to ensure you get the color and pattern you like and so you can test a sample of it.

Even among granites with the same color and name, from the same quarry, there are variations from slab to slab. Most people view that as a benefit since your counter top will be truly one-of-a-kind.

Price

Granite counter tops are most commonly sold by the square foot of the slab needed to cover your entire countertop including leftover scraps. Currently the price varies, depending on the quality and supply of the granite you choose, from an approximate low of about $25/sq. ft. to a high of about $125 per square foot including edge detail.

Edges come in a variety of styles to match your design theme whether ornate or sleek. Some of the fancier edges are created by gluing or laminating the edge for greater thickness and then cut to style.

All in all, you really can't go wrong with granite. And now that you know what to look for, you'll buy the best. There are other surfaces that are very good, but when comparing all the pros and cons, none are better than granite.

Looking for the best Caribbean beach vacation? Hey, I love sharing the highlights of all the places I visit and learn about. Below you'll find my top 10 picks for a great beach vacation with examples of what's special about them. Then you can decide which one you think would be the best beach vacation in the Caribbean for your trip!

Aruba:

This place is for those that like a non-stop vacation with lots of restaurants, bars casinos. The beaches are gorgeous, the water is wonderful and it hardly ever rains. The scuba diving is awesome with great opportunities for photography. The fishing is pretty good too.

Barbados:

Your troubles will simply wash away in the soft island serenity of this great beach vacation destination. Brighton Beach is a great place to stay for your Caribbean beach vacation and the most popular here. If you want a little more privacy you can get secluded villas around the island. Taking that horseback ride on the beach will feel as if you're in a movie and I would highly recommend trying it. Probably my second favorite beach vacation overall.

Turks and Caicos Islands:

Like long beach walks? At 12 miles long, Grace Bay is simply a phenomenal stretch of soft white sand with smaller luxury resorts, spas and great restaurants perfect for a beach honeymoon vacation. And the water color is the most vibrant translucent turquoise... I love it! Seems that many movie stars and rock stars like it too with several owning homes and vacationing here on some of the 8 secluded islands all with fantastic beaches. Turks & Caicos has long been a diver's paradise with great deep-sea and bone fishing too! Taking the kids? Well, Beaches Resort consistently gets high marks as one of the world's best family beach vacation spots.

Bahamas:

Technically not in the Caribbean, but with so many beautiful beaches I had to add it to the best beach vacation list... it's close enough. Paradise Island is great fun especially swimming with the dolphins, which is an experience of a lifetime. The diving here is fantastic because of the calm waters and enjoying the nightlife is all kinds of fun. For a secluded romantic get-a-way try the pink sand beach on Harbor Island.

British Virgin Islands & U.S. Virgin Islands:

Both make great beach vacations, especially for island hopping. Having a chance to easily enjoy not 1, 2, but potentially 3 islands or more each with it's own charm make for one of the best beach vacation spots. Trunk Bay on St. John is particularly gorgeous and popular with calm waters and an underwater snorkeling "trail."

Cayman Islands:

A very entertaining destination with odd things like feeding iguanas grapes while dining at a restaurant. Definitely worth it for the pictures! Three islands in all, its another great place to island hop and enjoy waterfall climbing, extensive shark diving, and swimming with the stingrays and shopping, shopping, shopping.

Dominican Republic:

Here is a place you can go for a cheap beach vacation and still enjoy all the splendid beauty of a Caribbean island. Have a great time scuba diving, swimming with dolphins, deep sea fishing and hiking. Fabulous beaches too!

Anguilla:

A fun Caribbean beach vacation to tell your friends about. It's the only area known in the Caribbean to have beautiful white sandy beaches deserted during peak season, which makes this a great place for couples to enjoy. Especially with activities that include windsurfing, scuba diving, and snorkeling. Oh, and if you love seafood, all I can say is, "The best chefs in the Caribbean!"

St. Lucia:

A honeymooners delight. Think jazz music, small island, secluded and intimate and that is St. Lucia. Beautiful beaches, lush tropical foliage, scenic mountains, spectacular sunsets and typically many great all-inclusive packages are offered. It all makes for a very seductive beach honeymoon vacation.

Hey, I could add a couple more since the Caribbean is full of beautiful and interesting places. Some may offer a little better snorkeling or fishing, larger or smaller hotels, more seclusion or more nightlife, but all are wonderful in their own way. You really can't go wrong with these when planning and dreaming of your next Caribbean beach vacation!

Planning your Caribbean honeymoon shouldn't be as complex as planning your wedding... Right! But with so many enticing options, where do you start? Well, start here of course and let me help you discover the best of the best honeymoon destinations.

Certainly you're looking for a romantic adventure where you'll experience many "first time" events together and every couple wants something a little different. I had a fabulous Caribbean honeymoon and have taken some great trips in my lifetime. Check out these top picks and what makes them special. One of them is perfect for that memorable trip you've been dreaming of!

Barbados

This island is absolutely gorgeous and you will definitely leave feeling spoiled. Stay at the secluded 110-year-old Crane Hotel for nostalgic romance or at the Peach & Quiet for a budget honeymoon. It's the adventurous couples dream with clear blue waters for scuba divers, windsurfers, and sightseeing from the air in a helicopter or underwater in a mini-sub. You'll find decent beaches here, but not the best of the bunch.

Turks & Caicos

If you like small secluded luxury hotels with world-class spas and great restaurants, then you'll love it here on any of the eight inhabited islands. The uncrowded beaches are absolutely fabulous. You may even end up sunbathing next to a movie star as many vacation in the Turks & Caicos. Go horseback riding, sail to one of the many deserted islands and play "Lost" for the day, see flocks of flamingos or thousands of iguanas on Little Water Cay. The scuba diving and snorkeling are phenomenal as is the deep-sea fishing and bone fishing. Kite-boarding, windsurfing and other water sports are also popular. A definite favorite for a perfect beach honeymoon vacation!

St. Lucia

This island is straight out of a fairytale with lush tropical scenery and twin mountain peaks covered in rain forest serenity. The locals are very friendly and seeing the St. Lucia Soufriere volcano from the inside will leave you in awe. Taking a day to tour the island on horseback is one of the major reasons this is in the top ten places to take a Caribbean honeymoon. Also, many hotels really cater to honeymooners with all-inclusive packages. Go in May and you'll catch the Jazz Festival, which is way fun!

Dominican Republic

A great choice for a budget honeymoon that still had beautiful beaches and lots to offer. Taking a catamaran ride to the enchanting Saona Island is just one of the ways to enjoy this romantic getaway. Add a visit to the 600-acre Ecological Park enjoying a dozen blue lagoons is nothing short then a romantic getaway in heaven.

Martinique

A great romantic get-a-way, yet for some reason it's still underrated compared to the rest here. Inhale the French culture along with the tantalizing scents of the beautiful flowers that consume the entire island. Take a canopy tour and go hiking in the rain forest canyons before getting a taste of superb Creole cuisine, going shopping and sampling the fairly lively nightlife.

Anguilla

When people choose a Caribbean honeymoon this island is over-looked more times than not. I have no idea why because it's built for couples to enjoy. You won't find much commercialization here, the nightlife is pretty low-key and water sports are not a big draw. But you'll have dozens of fantastic beaches to explore and the fine dining is possibly the best in all the Caribbean.

British Virgin Islands (BVI)

You have several islands to choose from with many hotel options for a secluded romantic retreat. Ride a yacht to the famous Baths of Virgin Gorda or find a hidden beach for you and your loved to enjoy all alone. The beach bars on Jost Van Dyke are a fun hangout popular with sailors.

US Virgin Islands (USVI)

All beautiful areas here, the fact that they're all considered part of the United States makes things more convenient. St. John has the best beaches and diving while St. Thomas is known for excellent dining and shopping. Of course, St. Croix is cheaper and also has casinos, so you pick or hop around. The variety of USVI makes it one of the best honeymoon destinations.

Jamaica

I absolutely love Ocho Rios. The Dunn's River Falls has got to be the coolest adventure climb on any island. Climb the waterfall and jump back down into the water... amazing! Horseback riding on the beach, a little reggae music and rum at sunset and you've got yourself a nice romantic getaway plus it's great for a budget honeymoon.

Cayman Islands

Saving this for last simply because if you want to take a romantic Caribbean honeymoon and still feel like your back home this is the closest thing you'll come across. With many American themes you won't feel too far away, but taking in some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the Caribbean will be breathtaking. Also, if you are into shopping and eating well, then the Caymans have got to be a top pick for you Caribbean honeymoon.

Now that you've got some good ideas, you just have to decide which is the best honeymoon destination for you. Hopefully this list has got you excited and also helped narrow down your choices too. Good luck and have fun. Whichever one you decide on, I hope you two have a wonderful wedding and a romantic honeymoon!

Kitchen Backsplash Design: Tips, Trends and Techniques for Creating Your Unique Style

A new kitchen backslpash design can revitalize an otherwise out-dated or tired style without remodeling your entire kitchen. Turn your kitchen backsplash into an eye-catching, one-of-a-kind design with exotic pieces, murals, mosaics, marble or metal tile. Backsplash ideas are endless, so good planning is important.

Follow these style tips and ideas to create that perfect backsplash design that you've been dreaming of.

Kitchen Backsplash Styles and Themes

I'm sure you've been in kitchens that you really loved and some you didn't. Also, you've seen enough pictures to have a good idea of the "look" you want to create. Adhering to a central theme will help you avoid a mish-mash style and turn your kitchen backsplash idea into a design that you enjoy for years to come.

Old World: This look is cozy and comfortable and easy to achieve. A classic style. Use tumbled marble, chipped or worn kitchen backsplash tile, cobblestone or generally any aged material in the subtle earth tones of beige, gold and light brown. Dark browns are out.

Hand-painted tiles, murals and mosaics are also right at home with this style. And although not traditional, a copper backsplash or tin backsplash could be interesting too.

Mediterranean: Colorful, hand-painted tiles in seaside colors of blue and green are what create this fresh, vibrant and comfortable look. The boldly colored tiles can be used as accents, or as a distinct kitchen tile design in a particular section or for the whole backsplash. This look works best when paired with light earth toned countertops and cabinets.

Contemporary: Clean, sleek lines and smooth surfaces are the keys here. No complex tile designs, rough textures or a busy stone. Polished granite on both the countertop and backsplash is perfect for achieving this look. But also consider a glass backsplash, metal backsplash or stainless steel backsplash for that ultra-urban appeal.

Metals are HOT! Copper, tin and especially stainless steel backsplashes and countertops are quickly gaining popularity with many new tiles and designs on the market.

Uniquely Yours: Don't be afraid to take elements of style, but not too many, from different themes to create a design that looks and feels good to you.

Just remember a simple, elegant backsplash design will be most pleasing. So, plan it all out first, have a clear picture in your mind what the finished product should be like and play with the design a bit.

Putting It All Together: Colors, Textures & Patterns

Your goal of course, is to integrate the backsplash with all the other elements and structures in your kitchen to establish the them you desire.

The colors of your backsplash material should be chosen to complement the countertops and cabinets.

Bits and splashes of non-complementary colors can be integrated if they don't compete for attention, but start by picking colors that are represented in your countertop.

The texture of the backsplash materials should be consistent with the style or theme of your kitchen. Rough and uneven for "Old-World" or smooth and sleek for contemprorary.

Avoid creating a busy pattern or using too many textures, colors or intense colors if your countertop has a lot of movement or veins. Creating harmony is the key and you don't want to confuse the eye with an
intricate backsplash design on top of a dramatic countertop.

More Fun Backsplash Ideas

Murals and mosaics in general will look better when paired with a countertop that has a uniform or subtle color and pattern.

Niches and ledges can be interesting and useful elements to add to your kitchen backsplash design. Place these above the sink or behind the cooktop to display a collection of colorful bottles, ceramics, plants or all your spices!

Picture frame designs are often added above the cooktop if space allows creating a focal point for a mural, mosaic or a more elaborate tile pattern.

Choose Your Countertops Before The Backsplash

You want to choose your countertop material prior to designing your backsplash for a few reasons.

First, the countertop is generally the
centerpiece of the kitchen and should be the first material chosen or matched to an existing color scheme.

Second, the countertop material is
going to cost you more than the backsplash, unless you are using the countertop material for a backsplash as well, which for most of us makes it a higher priority.

Lastly and probably the best reason to pick your
countertop first is that the design possibilities for your backsplash are virtually infinite; therefore, it is much easier to match the backsplash to the countertop rather than the reverse.

Designing Your Backsplash Space

First off, you need to determine the space you have available and whether you can or want to change it.

Measurements of a typical backsplash are 16 to 18 inches between the countertop and cabinets. Now, the countertops must be installed before adding the backsplash so, the countertop will be at a fixed
height.

The top cabinets, however, can be moved increasing available backsplash space to 20 inches or even 24 inches allowing more room for your design.

Of course, moving your current cabinets higher or installing new cabinets means that it will be more difficult to reach the top shelves and you may
lose space between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling, which is often a nice space for displaying plants, glassware, ceramics or other personal
treasures.

Before you decide, consider the size of your kitchen. A 24 inch backsplash may be overwhelming in an intimate kitchen, but if your kitchen is large and open with tall ceilings then the bigger space expands the
design possibilities and adds to the dramatic appeal of the backsplash.

Outlets and switches are an important consideration too. In most homes the outlets are right in the middle of the backsplash and will interfere with your design.

If you're only replacing the countertops and backsplash then it's probably not worth the trouble to have them moved.

If this is the case, you can faux paint the cover plates to match the backsplash, use stainless
steel cover plates if you have appliances to match or buy cover plates that are a close color match to the backsplash.

If you are doing a big kitchen remodel or building from scratch, then consider placing the outlets under the cabinets.

Other options are an outlet strip installed at the top of the splash or turn the outlet horizontal and place
them just above the countertop surface at the bottom of the backsplash where they are more likely to be hidden from view by all the stuff on your countertops.

Also, installing under-cabinet lighting will help showcase your backsplash and provide additional workspace light. Of course, messing with the electricity means you'll need to get a permit and adhere to building codes.

Creating a kitchen backsplash design is an exciting project since even simple designs are unique reflecting your personal taste and style. So have fun and good luck!

The Turks and Caicos Islands boast some of the most exquisite beaches in the entire Caribbean. Grace Bay Beach on Provo where courting couples find the perfect setting for a wedding is a 12-mile-long stunner voted best beach in the world on two occasions by readers of Conde Nast Traveler.

Best of all is that you can find many deserted beaches, small secluded coves and bays, which provide sheltered areas to swim, snorkel, sail and explore without the crowds except a pelican or two!

The rich and famous have known this for years with a long list of celebrities slipping away to the secluded shores of the Turks and Caicos for endless days of quiet relaxation.

Bruce Willis and Keith Richards have homes here and Justin Timberlake, Penelope Cruz, Ashton Kutcher, Julia Roberts, Michael Douglas and many others have visited.

Accommodations

Whether you're a young single, a couple or parents with kids you're sure to find accommodations to suit your tastes and needs.

The Turks and Caicos Islands offer choices ranging from quaint inns to small boutique resorts, a few larger hotels with all inclusive options and luxury resorts with fantastic spas considered some of the best anywhere in the world. Renting a condo or private villa is also a popular option.

Many Islands To Explore

Providenciales is the most populated island with most of the hotels and tourist facilities, but Parrot Cay, Pine Cay, North Caicos, Middle Caicos, South Caicos, Salt Cay and Grand Turk are particularly alluring for those looking to get off the beaten path. On these islands you'll find tiny towns, small personable hotels and pristine solitude.

Cockburn Town on Grand Turk is the Island's capital with a truly fascinating, one-of-a-kind museum. Cliffs and ancient caves await your exploration on Middle Caicos and you can watch the annual humpback whale migration right from the beach on Salt Cay.

Quick Facts

The Turks and Caicos are officially English speaking with a population close to 30,000 people made up of both "Belongers" (citizens) and expatriates. Most live on the main tourist hub of Providenciales or "Provo" as it's commonly called. The official currency is the US
dollar and major credit cards are accepted, as well as, travelers checks.

Traveling to the Turks and Caicos is typically more expensive than developed tourist destinations like Cancun or Nassau, Bahamas, but then that's typical of most Caribbean islands. However, the Turks and Caicos Islands are much less crowded and developed (for now) then most other Caribbean islands.

Known internationally as a leading tax haven and financial center for investments and business, tourism is still in the early stages. However, recent development trends are fueling fast growth in the Turks and Caicos economy and real estate market where condos and vacation homes are experiencing rapid appreciation.

Travel & Transportation

Direct flights from New York, Boston, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Miami make traveling from the United States easy, and allow visitors to be relaxing on the beach within a few short hours.

All US Citizens traveling by air to the Turks and Caicos Islands must have a valid US passport. Canadians can enter with a birth certificate and photo id.

Transportation is readily available through local agencies and major car rental companies at the airport and around town. It's best to book your rental well in advance especially if visiting during the peak winter season. Many resorts offer shuttle service from the airport. Taxis and small buses also serve the island.

Start Planning

The Turks and Caicos Islands are truly magnificent. If you want to get away from it all, you'll certainly enjoy lounging on the beautiful white sand beaches. For more adventure, the numerous national parks, nature preserves, sanctuaries and historical sites give you plenty of options for unique and interesting excursions. Of course, the bone fishing, big-game
fishing and scuba diving will have you coming back for more.

Plenty of inns, hotels and resorts are available perfect for young singles, couples or parents with kids. If you'd like to visit a Caribbean island that isn't crowded or over-developed then the Turks and Caicos are your best bet.

If you're looking to make a bold, modern statement in your kitchen, look no further than installing a stainless steel backsplash!

These pieces really brighten up your kitchen environment and give it a clean, sleek look. But it can be warm and interesting too, so don't limit yourself... metals can be incorporated into almost any design theme.

Backsplash Design

Used for decades in restaurants, stainless steel is undergoing a makeover as of late. You aren't restricted to just smooth sheets anymore.

Stainless steel backsplashes now come in a wide assortment of patterns and finishes and are an increasingly popular, stylish addition to today's updated and upscale kitchens.

When considering your backslpash idea, think about what kind of look or design theme you have in mind for your kitchen. Stainless steel is an extremely versatile material and no matter what you are looking to do, it offers some interesting possibilities.

If you enjoy using lots of different tools and gadgets in the kitchen, considering using stainless steel as the primary design material and going for a highly-polished, ultramodern look. For something cozier, try a matte finish. Or combine stainless steel tiles with other materials, such as glass or tumbled marble. You could even do just a portion of the backsplash with stainless... say around the cooktop.

Cost

A stainless steel backsplash can be rather spendy, but it will vary depending on size and complexity. Tiles, for instance, can run from 40 to 200 dollars per square foot. Yikes! That's more than many stone and glass tiles or other backsplash materials. But it can really make a big difference in the look and feel of your kitchen.

Sheets are less expensive, but will require expert installation. Expect to pay at least 20 dollars per square foot to fabricate and install sheets.

Backsplash Care and Cleaning

Caring for a stainless steel backsplash is a breeze! For day-to-day cleaning, warm water and soap on a soft cloth will take care of this highly hygienic surface. For a spotless finish, remember to wipe dry. Also, new sprays can keep fingerprints under control.

Do remember that the acids that come from tomato or citric acid can cause blemishes, as can bleaches and chlorides. Stains typically only occur in extreme cases when the substance has been left for days. Normal cleaning and a thorough rinse will take care of this. For further protection, consider applying a sealer.

Installation

The most common look is a sheet of stainless steel that has been custom-fit to your kitchen. This is a fairly straightforward installation. When going with this look, all that needs to be done is to take measurements of area for a sheet of steel to be cut to size. After this sheet has been prepared, it is "glued" to the wall with silicone caulking or screwed into a backing.

Tiles require less expertise, but are similarly applied to a backing attached to the wall.

Pros and Cons

While your stainless steel backsplash will be durable, heat resistant and easy to clean, do keep in mind that it will scratch and dent easier than a backsplash made out of ceramic, granite or marble. Patterned tiles are excellent for hiding blemishes that occur through normal use. Happily, though, it does not require polishing, so unlike copper, zinc or brass, it will not discolor over time.

Design Alternatives

Other currently popular ideas you may consider when designing your backsplash is the use of copper or tin. Do find out how they will perform in a kitchen environment, though, so you aren't surprised if you copper discolors! For a truly unique look, why not consider mixing stainless steel tile with another metal?

Whether you're looking to redo your kitchen or you're designing your kitchen as part of your new home construction, consider installing a stainless steel backsplash for stylish durability!

If you're unfamiliar with concrete countertops, you are probably feeling a little amused with the whole idea of having a sidewalk where your kitchen counter top or bathroom vanity should be.

I can assure you that this comical vision is far from the stylish, warm and natural look of this surface.

Concrete countertops can be customized with unique colors, unusual shapes and specialty finishes not available with other surfaces.

Truly a designing dream, concrete countertops are rapidly gaining popularity with restaurants, hotels and homeowners.

Colors

Virtually any color can be achieved with cement counter tops. Every fabricator of mixes their own recipe of sand, water and stone and custom color pigmentation can be added to the mix or stains can be applied in the later stages. Either way you get a unique color variation to your finished countertop.

The particular coloring process results in colors that are warm and rich with earthy tones. Considering that the colors found in nature provide us with an amazing spectrum from sandstone creams to deep reds and every shade in between, your choice is almost endless.

The most popular colors are creams, grays and browns that are a natural complement to popular decorating and design materials like wood, stone, stainless steel and brick.

Design Possibilities

As coloring pigments, stains, various aggregates, and epoxy coatings are added to the concrete mixture, your countertop may be created to resemble the look, texture, and feel of quarried stone such as marble, granite, and limestone.

Interesting objects such as shells, coins and glass tiles may be set into your kitchen counter top to enhance your decorating theme or give added depth to the counter top surface. This is particularly beneficial to restaurants and hotels when creating decor themes, but offers equally enticing design possibilities for your home as well.

Like stone or other natural surfaces, concrete is not a static material and it will acquire character over time.

Unlimited Shapes and Forms

If you desire a non-traditional shape, then concrete countertops definitely are the most versatile surface on the market. Your countertop can be as unique as your imagination. Molds can be individually shaped to perfectly suite any space, or unusual location.

Curves, L-shapes and V-shapes are all available options when designing with concrete.

Trivets for hot pots and pans can be made and built-in sinks are popular for both kitchen and bath.

Many edge styles are available and you're sure to find one you like, but each fabricator is a bit different so your choices depend on your contractor.

Fabrication and Installation

As with coloring, each manufacturer has their own method. They may be pre-cast the countertop in a shop controlled environment or create it on location.

Concrete countertops are made with a combination of cement, lightweight aggregates and additives such as silica, fume, pozzolan and acrylic fiber. Structural steel or wire mesh and/or fiberglass is used for reinforcement.

Sometimes the concrete may be ground or polished to achieve a finer, smoother finish.

The final step when installing your countertop is sealing the concrete. The type of sealer used varies so consult with your installer.

Price

Concrete countertops range in price from $66-$125 per square foot for materials, plus installation of between $40-$50 per hour. Installation is difficult and requires a high level of skill and experience to do properly. Hence, the steep price.

This might be far more than laminated surfaces, but concrete countertops offer more style and durability than laminate.

Actually, the price of an installed concrete countertop may rival that of some expensive granite or marble countertops with beauty to match.

Cleaning and Care

It is not recommended to use your concrete countertop as a cutting board or place hot pots and pans straight onto the surface. Concrete may be hard and durable, but your countertop must still be treated with proper care.

Cleaning your concrete is no different than cleaning your granite countertop. Hot water and a sponge will clean suitably. When more aggressive cleaning is required, neutrally balanced ph soaps are recommended. Abrasive cleaners should be avoided.

Your concrete countertop should be waxed every three months for continued care and protection of the sealer.

Are Concrete Countertops Right For You?

Let's see:

Pro's:

**Concrete countertops offer custom colors. The colors of wood, granite, marble and other durable alternatives are restricted to the material itself.

**Unique personalization is possible by embedding objects into your countertop to add depth or create a particular theme.

**Any shape or form can be fashioned with built-in sinks and drain boards.

**Concrete countertops can be installed without seams in many instances.

Con's:

**Concrete countertops are more porous than granite requiring sealing initially and waxing on a regular basis

**They are not heat or scratch proof

**Concrete is more susceptible to cracks

**Expensive--often more than granite or marble

Concrete countertops certainly offer interesting and stylish design possiblities not found with other surfaces and a few trade-offs as usual.

However, with professional installation and proper care, you can be confident your concrete countertops will provide you with years of fashionable and functional satisfaction.

Building Outdoor Kitchens: The Hottest Trend In Cool Entertainment

Building outdoor kitchens is all the rage and if you haven't already built one, I'm sure you're cooking up an outdoor kitchen plan for your home. And why not upgrade your backyard to be the hot spot on the block for entertaining and relaxing...

Outdoor kitchens increase your living space adding tremendous value and appeal to your home. That's why building outdoor kitchens is the second most popular remodeling project after indoor kitchens.

However, a great outdoor kitchen is a complex project.

You can certainly enjoy your backyard and grill up some tasty BBQ on any charcoal or gas grill, but to truly bring your kitchen outdoors requires significant planning, skill and expertise. This project is not a do-it-yourselfer.

Here's what you'll need to consider:

Your basic outdoor kitchen set-up will include a built-in barbeque grill, countertop, sink, refrigerator, outdoor kitchen cabinets and cozy outdoor furniture or barstools for yourself and all your guests to kick back.

The barbeque grills on the market today offer so many bells and whistles that you should start shopping around early to determine your favorite options and how much you want to spend.

Next, the type of countertop surface is a crucial decision when building outdoor kitchens. Options include tile, quartz, solid surface, granite and other natural stones. Choosing the right countertop will ensure years of enjoyment and admiration. The wrong one...years of hassle and headaches.

If price is a primary consideration then take a look at tile. Just know that a tile countertop may not stand up as well to the elements and will require significant maintenance to keep the grout clean and the tiles intact.

Granite and quartz are more expensive, but offer the best long-term value with excellent durability and superior styling.

For the ultimate in luxury, you may also consider installing pergolas, stereos, ceiling fans, fire pits and more. Even TVs are moving outside.

Comfort & Flow

Comfort is key to enjoying your outdoor kitchen and entertainment space. But before you empty your wallet on that imported teak dining set with bar stools, take a look at the space you have available and decide how it's going to "flow."

Everyone needs a little space so, make sure your outdoor kitchen plan accounts for some basic and standard construction measurements to allow plenty of room to sit and move about.

Outdoor Kitchen Location

Of course, the idea of an outdoor kitchen is to relieve you of all the shuttling back and forth from your kitchen inside. Nonetheless, you'll want to locate your outdoor kitchen as close as possible to the indoor one for overall convenience.

Also, when building outdoor kitchens keep in mind things like, electricity, water and gas. The closer your outdoor kitchen is to your house the easier it will be to hook up to these utilities.

Sun and rain exposure is an important consideration. Certainly you'll want some protection from the rain so grilling can continue even if the party must move indoors.

In northern areas you may want to maximize sun exposure, while most southern backyard kitchens should be designed to shield the sun either by location or the addition of a pergola or large umbrella.

Wind protection is another reason to stay close to the house. You don't want to be so close that smoke from the grill is easily blown around seating areas, but taking advantage of walls and fences will make grilling more pleasant. However, fencing, trees, shrubs and planters can be added for greater protection.

Utilities & Permits

If you're not building a new home that includes an outdoor kitchen, chances are your outdoor kitchen plan will require installation of water, electric and possibly gas supply to your cooking area.

Water supply to the sink will need to be installed so it can drain in winter to prevent freeze damage and building codes will probably require the sink drain be connected to the main house drain.

You'll need to hire an electrician to install GFCI outlets above the countertop and for your lighting. If your outdoor kitchen plan calls for cooking with natural gas vs. propane then you'll need a plumber to run an underground gas line.

Permits will be required so everything should be mapped out in advance. And although some aspects of building outdoor kitchens can be handled by the competent do-it-yourselfer, the complete project involves extensive and specialized installations that are best left to professionals.

You'll have many discussions with your contractor about all of these items, but this should get the juices flowing on your great outdoor kitchen plan.
