Contrary to popular opinion, the martial art Karate was not invented in China. Rather, it has its origins in the island of Okinawa in Japan. The word "Karate" means the "empty hand" or the "Chinese hand", and it has been given this name because it involves a rapid use of hands and legs in an extreme close combat.

It was sometime in the sixteenth century that Chinese Kung Fu fighters experimented around with their styles and formulated the "te" technique ("Te" means hand). The art grew in China and evolved from a very rough and simple fighting style into a hard, close-combat style.

Around the late nineteenth century, Gichin Funakoshi, a famous martial arts practitioner from Japan, blended new moves into the "Te" style and displayed his art to the Japanese martial arts masters in early twentieth century. This was the beginning of Karate, as we know it.

Karate kicked off with the original Okinawa style; later on, the Japanese patented their own styles, which are now appropriately called Japanese styles of Karate. With time, many karate schools all cross the world began naming their Karate after their school's or master's name, giving birth to many sub-styles.

The original style - known as the Okinawa style - is a very hard and external style. It employs circular means of defense while its attack is linear in nature. The physical condition is extremely rigorous, as compared to the Japanese style of Karate. The Japanese style of Karate is more stylistic and its movements are linear in both defense and offense.

Some of the important Karate sub-styles are: (i) Wado-Ryu style, which combines JiuJitsu movements with Okinawa karate techniques, and (ii) Uechi-Ryu style, which blends Okinawa Karate with Chinese martial arts tactics. The Uechi-Ryu style appears more Chinese than Japanese though it is a blend of both the cultures.

As you know, Karate is a fast-paced martial art that involves electric movements of the hands and legs. So, you need to ensure that you are attired in a comfortable Karate uniform.

As Karate involves close combat and can be lethal, you will also need to protect your head and groin by strapping on a head guard and groin protector, respectively. Arm, chest and leg guards are available too, and so are karate mitts and shin protectors. And, of course, mouth guards can be considered too, just in case.

To train for Karate, you will need jump ropes, breakable boards, a Karate training board and a Karate training system. To perform Karate exercises, you will need leg and body stretchers, mats, water training bags, punching bags and pull-up and push-up bars.

And, finally, before you go out there to practice Karate, do not forget to plug in a first aid kit in your bag.

Karate not only keeps your body fit, it also strengthens your mind and enhances your concentration. Only thing, you must learn to respect it and practice it seriously as an art.

The Art Of Creating A Desert Landscaping

When a person thinks about landscaping, it may be difficult to think of landscaping a desert. It is first important to understand what landscaping is and then you can appreciate what it is like to do desert landscaping and how to do it correctly.

Landscaping is a science as well as an art and requires a person with good observation and design skills. A talented and qualified landscaper is able to understand nature and be able to construct and blend those elements to create a masterpiece.

With that being said, what is landscaping? It is the modification of any visible feature of an area of land. This can include all living elements such the flora and fauna. Most people would call this gardening.

Gardening is an art of growing plants with the goal being to create something beautiful within the landscape. Landforms, terrain shape and elevation as well as bodies of water are also part of landscaping. Man made objects as well can be used in landscaping and taking into consideration the elements and lighting conditions is also a part of landscaping.

With this knowledge that you have now acquired, we can talk about desert landscaping. Think of all the elements and landforms that you have to work with in the desert. There are cacti, tumbleweeds, dirt and you have the wind and the heat to contend with as well. Believe it or not you can create a very tranquil landscape scheme in the desert. The vital key here is to be efficient.

In the desert, it is important to keep in mind that every drop of water that can be provided to your landscape needs to be used to its fullest potential before it evaporates. You must be mindful of the soil.

Desert soil is going to be the toughest challenge that you will face with your landscaping. The soil is tough and very alkaline with toxic levels of salinity. This makes gardening next to impossible coupled with the heat of the sun and you are facing an uphill battle.

Using mulch and soil additives and shading will help improve your soil. These additives will make drainage as well as retaining water a positive force in your soil. Good soil is important so the landscape that you are planting can anchor itself into the ground. Good anchor will help prevent the landscape from being blown away in the wind.

The wind in the desert can be almost as damaging as the sun. To help protect against the wind, while the plants are beginning to anchor themselves make sure that you use good ground cover, fences and even gravel.

Knowing that we are talking about the desert, we really shouldn't even have to mention the heat factor. This is another reason that using each drop of water to its fullest potential is important in sustaining your landscape. The key component to using water properly is good soil. These together will help you build a beautifully landscape area in the desert.

Before going on that much anticipated vacation either alone or with your family, it would be a good idea to follow these tips a day or two in advance of leaving:

1. Make sure that you confirm all vacation reservations which include hotel, plane, car, train, dining and any activity reservations that may be on your schedule. Placing a few telephone calls beforehand may just save you much headache and stress later on.

2. If you get the local newspaper, remember to put a hold on it until you return from your vacation. You may also want to curtail your mail delivery as well.

3. It would be a smart thing to go to your bank to get travelers checks instead of using cash. Organize any credit cards you are planning to take with you, and make a list of emergency numbers to call in the event that your credit cards or travelers checks are stolen or lost.

4. If you plan to visit a foreign country, make sure that you have a small amount of that country's currency to take with you.

5. Try to pack on the light side. If you have very large bags such as ski equipment or a golf bag and clubs, you may want to consider having such things shipped to your destination.

6. Be sure to check the weather at your arrival point so that you are able to make any last-minute wardrobe changes.

7. If you are planning to fly, call the airline to confirm that your flight is leaving on schedule.

8. Pack any video equipment and cameras at least the day before you leave. Charge or change any batteries to make sure everything is ready to use. Take extra batteries along.

9. If you are traveling by plane, pack a small carry-on bag with much-needed essentials in the event that your bags get lost or are delayed.

10. If you are driving, make sure you have a road atlas handy. If you belong to AAA, they can map out the directions for you.

Now that you know what to do before you go on vacation, the next thing to do is to choose a place that you know the whole family will enjoy. Children usually cannot wait for the summer to come because they are waiting with bated breath to see where their vacation spot will be. Here are some great ideas for you to consider:

- Family Dude Ranch - Dude ranches across our country and in Canada offer many programs that the whole family can enjoy. There are such things as horseback riding, fishing, swimming, rafting and wildlife watching. Plan to spend a whole week there so that you can get in some good family bonding time.
- Whale watching - This would be considered one of the more unique summer vacations. Some of the best whale watching destinations are Cape Cod, Vancouver Island and the California coast.
- Visit a national park or other historic sites - The United States has many beautiful national parks to choose from. If camping is your thing or you just plan on taking day trips, this is a good vacation idea that will fit any vacationer's budget. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park is a wonderful place to visit.
- A trip to the Hawaiian Islands can be relaxing for parents and loads of fun for the children. There are many vacation resorts in Hawaii that cater to families.
- City vacations - Two big cities that I would recommend visiting are New York City and Washington, D.C. There is something about the big city that mesmerizes children. There are so many things to do and see! They offer such things as theater performances, museums, zoos and other famous sites.

No matter where you plan to go or what you plan to do, try to make this vacation time one of relaxation and pleasure. This is also a very good time to become 're-acquainted' with your family amidst the hustle and bustle of ordinary life.

Several Tips On Choosing The Best Home Theater System

A home theater, to put it very simply, is arranging a variety of electronic components in order to make you feel that you are really watching a movie in a movie theater. Watching a movie on a home theater system is not at all like watching it on an ordinary television.

In order to build a home theater properly you will need to try to recreate the same type of elements that you would find in a movie theater. To have a good home theater system, you will have to have the following essentials (and this is a bare minimum):

1. You will need to have a television that measures at least 27 inches diagonally. You should also make sure that it delivers a clear picture.
2. You should have a minimum of four speakers.
3. You will need equipment that is able to split up the surround-sound signal and send it to the speakers.
4. You will need a component that is able to broadcast or play movies in surround sound and something that will give you a clear picture as well.

You will definitely needs a room in your house that will be suitable for arranging all of the home theater equipment.

There are many ways of meeting the above mentioned criteria. Basically, the kind of home theater you will have will depend largely on your budget. You must also rank in importance the different areas of performance and which means the most to you.

If you do not have all that much money to spend but it has been your dream to have a home theater system, then take another look at your television and your stereo system. Perhaps your TV is large enough that you would not have to consider getting a bigger television.

Your home entertainment system could be upgraded into a simple home theater system just by adding some extra speakers as well as some other rather inexpensive components. If your budget only allows for the basics, you just may get away with spending only about $500. This will probably get you a new DVD player as well as a basic surround-sound system.

Of course, if you are looking to have a more advanced home theater that has a much larger TV and a more advanced sound system, then you may be looking at spending about $8,000. If money is no object and you really want to have that true movie experience at home, then for about $30,000 you could set up your own theater inside of your home that is equipped with real theater seats, a projection TV and built-in speakers.

Here are also several reasons why you might want to consider a home theater system:

1. In your own home theater system, you can ask people to be quiet without any qualms of being beat up.
2. You can take off your shoes and feel comfortable when you are at home with your own home theater.
3. In your own home theater system you can rewind the movie if you did not get something the first time, did not understand something or if you just want to see the scene again.
4. You don't have to put up with screaming children when you view something on your own home theater system.

These are just some of the benefits of having your own home theater system. You will find that in the long run, it will probably save you money as well as the inconvenience of having to go out all of the time to see a movie!

Do You Want To Lose Extra Weight? Try Atkins Diet!

The Atkins Diet, created by Dr. Robert Atkins, is based on the theory that consuming too much carbohydrates, especially the refined carbs as those found in white bread, sugar and high-fructose corn syrups, is responsible for the high incidence of obesity-causing metabolic disorders amongst the Western population - and lifestyles based on too little physical activity only adding to the problem of obesity and diabetes.

The other unique feature of Atkins Diet is that saturated fats are not considered the main nutritional culprits - it is the trans-fats found in hydrogenated oils that need to be shunned along with carbohydrates. Thus, Atkins Diet is one that is drastically restricted in carbohydrates and is relatively rich in proteins and saturated fats.

Dr. Robert Atkins formulated the Atkins's Diet sometime in the sixties. The inspiration was an article featured in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Dr. Atkins adapted these ideas to formulate a diet and tried it on himself, and the results were startling. He treated thousands of overweight patients and expounded his diet in a series of books. The rest is history.

The logic behind Atkins's Diet is quite simple: your body fulfills a major part of its energy requirements by burning carbs as fuel. And so, if you deprive it of carbs by substituting them with proteins and fats in your diet, the body would run out of fuel and, therefore, be forced into fat-burning mode (ketosis).

All the energy requirements of the body would then be met with by burning the stored body fat, leading to rapid fat loss and weight loss. When the body is in the state of ketosis, one also tends to feel less hungry and so consumes less calories than what one would normally do.

There are four phases in Atkins Diet: (1) Induction, (2) Ongoing weight loss, (3) Pre-maintenance and (4) Lifetime maintenance.

The Induction phase is the most restrictive phase, with the allowed intake of carbohydrates being restricted to a meager 20 net grams/day. This is required in order to push the body into a state of ketosis. A multivitamin supplement is highly recommended during this initial phase.

In the following phases the intake of carbohydrates is then gradually increased (up to a reasonable amount, though still far lesser than the average carbohydrate consumption), but sooner or later the body gets have used to a low-carbs diet.

Foods Recommended in Atkins Diet

1. High-protein foods such as meat, fish and eggs are a must. However, they must not be breaded, nor should they be consumed along with sauces, which are high in carbohydrates.
2. Low-carb vegetables/fruits are fine too. Some examples of such vegetables are spinach, herbs, celery, radish, sprouts, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower and Avocado. For a comprehensive list of low-carb veggies/fruits, you can always run a check on the Internet.
3. Cheese - all kinds of cheese can make a part of Atkins Diet. Butter is good too, but you shouldn't go overboard.
4. Olive oil is the preferred choice amongst cooking oils. Trans-fats have to be strictly avoided. But nuts are great.
5. As far as drinks go, Atkins Diet recommends 8 glasses of water a day. Drinks with sugar content are a big no-no - and that includes sugared tea and coffee. Diet sodas are okay though.
6. Psyllium comes highly recommended, as it is rich in fiber.
7. Sugar is out, while sugar substitutes are okay - but must be taken in limited amounts.

Many people follow the Atkins Diet and many results that have been published in esteemed review journals have spoken in favor of this diet, as they haven't observed any serious side effects. But some controversies and questions still remain, e.g., whether it would be suitable for people having kidney problems. So, before latching on to Atkins Diet diet, it is best to consult your doctor first.

If you live in an area that gets a lot of snow each winter, more than likely you are quite concerned about snow removal. When it comes to snow removal, you have a variety of different options to choose from. Some methods will take a professional, while other methods you will be able to use yourself.

When considering various kinds of snow removal you will want to consider the ease of use, the price it will cost, and how effective the type of removal will be. The following are just a few of the snow removal options that you will have this winter.

Snow Plows
The first option for snow removal that you have is a snow plow. Now these snow plows are not just for anyone, and it is best to hire a professional to do this type of snow removal for you. If you have a large area that you need cleaned off and you don't have time to work on it yourself, then hiring someone with a snow plow may be a great choice.

ATV Snow Plows
Another choice that you have when it comes to different kinds of snow removal is ATV snow plows. These are designed so that anyone can use them. They are strong enough to handle heavy snow, yet they are compact enough to provide for easy storage as well.

Not only can you use your ATV snow plow during the winter for snow, but there are other things you can use your ATV snow plow for as well. With great snow removal you can do yourself, the ATV snow plow is a very great idea for those who want to avoid hiring someone else to do your snow removal for you.

Snow Blower
Another choice you have for snow removal during the winter is a snow blower. These machines are made to take snow and blow it out to the side so you get the snow out of your way. You can choose form an electric snow blower or you can go for a gas snow blower as well. More than likely if you have a large area you need to use the blower on, you'll want to go with a gas one.

Snow Shovel
A snow shovel is also an option for snow removal during the winter as well. However, many people do not like the idea of having to work hard with a shovel to remove the snow. This can be very hard work, and if you have a large area you want to clear, it will take a long time with a shovel. More than likely you'll want something that will do a better and faster job for you when it comes to removing snow.

What You Need To Know Before Buying A Chainsaw

The modern, gas-powered chainsaw has proven to be one of the most beneficial tools ever for the forestry and logging industry. Chainsaws are portable tools that feature a small, 2-cycle engine that operates on a combination of gasoline and oil. The chainsaw uses a metal bar of varying lengths to guide a toothed chain in a circular motion to cut through wood.

The first tool resembling today's chainsaw was used in the mid 1800s to cut bone. The chainsaw that we know today wasn't introduced until the 1920s and many of those early mechanical pioneers are still represented by today's leading brands of chainsaws, including Stihl, founded by Andreas Stihl in 1926 in a small German town, and McCulloch, the first North American chainsaw manufacturer.

Most chainsaws are used to cut wood, typically in tree trimming or felling operations by arborists, foresters, and loggers. There are special saws designed for cutting limbs away from the trunk of the tree and others specifically for cutting large logs on the ground. There are also a broad line of chainsaws designed with amateurs and homeowners in mind.

Besides standard tree care and clearing operations, chainsaws are also used in the firefighting industry to clear away hazardous trees and bring control to forest fires and are quite useful for firewood collection. There are also specially designed tips and blades for the popular hobby of wood carving. RedMax and Echo both offer an assortment of tools and accessories for carvers. Specialty carbide chainsaw chains are available as well, though rather costly, for cutting through other materials, including fiberglass and metal.

The chainsaw has revolutionized the tree care, logging, and clearing industries and has made it simple for the average person to manage the small trees and shrubs in their yard. Modern chainsaws require much less labor to operate and work much more efficiently than hand-powered chainsaws used previously. They are also easy to move from place to place and offer more convenience and versatility. The main downfalls of gas-powered chainsaws are the maintenance involved and the major concerns with user safety.

Properly maintaining a chainsaw is crucial for long-term, efficient operation. It is important to use the correct mix of gas and oil, depending on the manufacturer's specifications, and to keep the bar oil reservoir filled anytime the saw is in use. The air filter within the chainsaw must be kept clean and the gears and motor mechanisms should be inspected periodically for clogs and debris. Sharpening the chain can also be time consuming, especially if the saw came in contact with dirt, dead or twisted wood, or metal from a nail, bullet, or fence.

Through the years, chainsaw manufacturers have improved greatly on the safety features and efficient running of their tools, but chainsaws are still extremely dangerous and are responsible for more than 40,000 injuries and death each year in the US alone. Anyone can purchase and use a chainsaw without any type of training or license, but it is recommended that new users become familiar with proper chainsaw safety guidelines first.

The biggest safety risk during chainsaw operation is kickback, which occurs when the teeth on the chain become stuck in the wood, causing the chain to no longer turn and forcing the moving bar towards the user. To minimize this risk, always use a chainsaw with a working brake with your hands in the correct position. If the saw is used properly, your hand will enact the brake and stop the chain if the chainsaw starts to kickback.

It is also important to wear the appropriate protection while operating a chainsaw. Gloves and eye protection are a must and ear plugs are recommended for prolonged use. Chainsaw protective clothing and chaps are also available for extended protection from injury. Use the right size chainsaw, bar, and chain for the job you are doing and leave difficult tree trimming or take downs to experienced professionals.

To People Who Want To Quit Smoking -- But Can't Get Started

Yes, you can! Quit, that is. If you are a smoker, you know how hard it is to try and quit smoking. Chances are you've tried, or at the very least, you've thought about it.

You know the panicky feeling you get when you think of never smoking another cigarette. You understand the feeling of nervousness, and the other things that come along with trying to kick this addiction. Although it's difficult and requires a strong will, you can quit.

Cigarette smoking is the number one preventable cause of death in the United States. It is also the top cause of cancer. In fact, around 80% of cancer cases can be attributed to smoking. It is responsible for 20% of cancer deaths. The bad thing is that a lot of people continue to smoke, knowing these things.

Smoking can be blamed for cases of cancer of the mouth, bladder, cervix, lungs, kidneys and many others. People have to suffer with these things daily around the world, and most express the regret that they continued to smoke for so long.

Smoking contributes to the risk of stroke, heart attack and many other chronic diseases. It also increases our 'bad cholesterol' levels. In pregnant women, smoking can cause a child to be born early, or with low birth weight. It can even cause birth defects or deformities. Research points to cigarette smoke as a possible factor in SIDS or sudden infant death syndrome.

One of the most terrible things about smoking is what the second-hand smoke can do to those around you, or even perfect strangers. People who breathe smoke that is in the air from another person's cigarette can experience adverse effects as well.

It can cause lung cancer, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and many other chronic illnesses. This can be a tragedy for the children who breathe the smoke that comes from your cigarettes at home.

Nicotine is what is responsible for the addiction that you have to cigarettes. Nicotine addiction is a powerful thing, and when you go without a cigarette for a while, you may notice withdrawal symptoms. Some of these might include: confusion, irritability, panic, a feeling of loss, and other symptoms. This is what you feel when you try to quit, and what makes it so difficult. Nicotine is more addicting than caffeine, marijuana, and even heroine.

As difficult as it might be to quit smoking, you can do it. You need to have the proper motivation, and one of the most powerful types of motivation you can use is your children or loved ones. No one wants their children to suffer from the adverse effects of second hand smoke. No one wants their children to have to live through the terrible ordeal of their parents' painful tobacco related diseases.

You can quit smoking. Gather the drive and determination from learning about the painful and difficult things that smoking can bring you. Think of the people you love, and you can overcome your addiction to nicotine.

Special Tips To Cure High Blood Pressure

If suspect that you or someone you love might have high blood pressure, you may be feeling anxious and nervous. It can be a serious condition, but with a little bit of basic knowledge about it, you can begin to feel more comfortable and make a clear decision as to what you would like to do about it.

When thinking about this condition, which is also called hypertension, it is important to know a little bit about blood pressure. Your heart pumps your blood through your body at powerful rate, but when the pressure that is used to power the blood is too strong, this results in high blood pressure.

When you suffer from hypertension, it means that your heart and your arteries need to work harder. Over an extended period of time, hypertension greatly increases the chance of a heart attack, a stroke, kidney problems or one of a number of other issues.

Any medical professional can diagnose this disease. Usually, an inflatable cuff will be placed around your arm and the flow of your blood will be measured with a meter.

To better understand the reading that you are given, it is important to know that normal pressure of your blood is 120/80. What this means is that your blood pressure measures at 120 mmHg during a heart beat and 80 mmHG when your heart is at rest. A constant reading that comes out at 140/90 or above is considered indicative of high blood pressure.

If you have hypertension, you are certainly not alone! Almost one third of all Americans suffer from it and most of them don't know it. Because this condition has no symptoms, it may not be discovered until the damage is done, that is, until heart disease, strokes and kidney failures.

This is the reason that appointments for checkups should be made yearly; every normal checkup will include a blood pressure reading and this can prevent serious problems further down the line. If identified early on, high blood pressure can be treated with a change in lifestyle, or with medication.

If high blood pressure runs in your family, it will definitely be worth your time to take steps to prevent it from happening to you. Maintaining a healthy weight and living an active lifestyle are both ways that you can prevent hypertension, as is having a healthy diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, and low sodium foods. Having a low alcohol intake is linked to having healthy blood pressure, as is a diet that features low-fat dairy products.

Hypertension can be a difficult thing to deal with, but once you have some information on the issue, you can make reasoned decisions on the choices in front of you.

You must make sure that your Forex broker has the right qualifications. Now that your list has been narrowed, it is time to research your choices. One good idea is to send some e-mails out to your customer service people and see how long it takes for them to respond.

When considering a forex broker, find out just how fast it takes him to execute an order. You should also find out how much slippage you can expect.

Here are some other key points to consider when looking for a forex broker:

1. Available currency pairs - Each forex broker will have, at the minimum, the seven major currencies.

2. Transaction costs - The forex broker is paid based on the bid ask spread. There should be no other hidden charges or fees. If the spread is smaller, that means it is better for you. Pip spreads vary from broker to broker so do some competitive shopping.

3. Free analysis tools - You will need to have some charts and technical analysis tools to be able to spot trends and plan your entry and exit points. Most brokers offer their basic services at no charge. If you require something over and beyond the basic service, there may be an additional charge.

4. Immediate execution of orders - You will need a broker who will be able to consistently execute your trade swiftly.

5. Superior customer service - If you need assistance, your forex broker should respond quickly and efficiently to any question that you may have. Representatives should be available around the clock either by telephone or e-mail.

6. Margin requirement - If you want to have more leverage, choose a low margin requirement. You can use margin to your advantage to produce huge profits.

7. Minimum account balance - Since you are a small individual investor, you must try to find a forex broker who does not require a hefty balance to open an account.

8. User-friendly trading platform - Before deciding to go with one particular broker, choose a few forex brokers and ask to sign up for a free demo account.

You would do well to trade with play money while you are deciding which broker and which program works best for you.
