Surfing is one of the most thrilling sports there can be on sea. But unlike most sea sports, it does not require machinery of some sort. All you need in surfing are: a board, surfing gear, rippling waves and a sense of adventure. But just like any other sport, surfing can also drain your energy and patience. It can be grueling especially to the neophytes, as it requires perfect mind and body coordination. To have a body in total harmony with your inner self to get your body in the best surfing condition, surfers will recommend one thing and that is to practice yoga!

You might think that surfing and yoga are far out from each other but you are wrong. Both have similar concepts that really blend well to give you a better life. Here are five reasons why surfing and yoga is a great combination.

1.	Yoga and surfing have a common denominator. They are ways of life.
Yoga is more than an exercise as surfing is more than a sport. Both are ways of living that help make people attain a fuller and more complete life. They also help you know more not only about yourself but also about your surroundings: yoga seeks enlightenment of your spirituality while surfing makes you one with nature. The yoga world is also similar with a surfing moment; a place of freedom, a place of peace, a place without time... Either way, you become your better person as you completely immerse yourself in the activity and in the process, rest your mind and spirit to release your fullest.

2.	Surfing without exercise such as yoga can have health repercussions.
Although surfing is a good exercise, it is not perfect because it is not completely symmetrical. Surfing does not work all body parts as it concentrates only on some especially the shoulders and arms. In the process, the rest of the body does not get its proper exercise. That is why it is always recommended that surfing be paired with a form of exercise that gives emphasis on stretching such as yoga. Yoga can work the body parts that are not frequently worked out in surfing. With that, you are ensured that you have a complete activity for your entire body.

3.	Yoga will teach you patience in surfing.
Starting to surf may be difficult to some people who do not have the skill of balance pros have. However, with a little more practice, you can gain more knowledge about reaching your body's equilibrium but this may take time. Some may learn to surf in only a few days but some may take several weeks or months with a very long learning curve. With the help of yoga, meditation and breathing can make you become a more patient student surfer. The extended patience that you gain from practicing yoga can also be helpful while waiting for those surf quality waves to practice on.

4.	Yoga will increase your strength and flexibility on the board.
Yoga can enhance your self-awareness and make your body and mind exist in perfect harmony. Yoga will sharpen your concentration, enabling you to attain perfect equilibrium. Because yoga includes stretching and different forms to be followed, it will improve the flexibility of every part of your body. Flexibility is the key to constancy on top of the board while surfing a wave. Flexibility gained by practicing yoga also helps you move with more freedom, balance and comfort. And in this area, it is obvious how yoga can really be helpful.

5.	Yoga will help you improve posture and breathing.
Just like in yoga, proper posture and breathing is also important in surfing. You reach maximum performance when your body has proper amounts of oxygen taken in and is in the proper position. With yoga, you will learn to breathe and pose better. Yoga benefits such as minimized tension on the body especially on the back and the shoulders can maximize surfing performance. Proper breathing and posture will give you strength and balance that can increase stability while you glide on the waves.

Surfing and yoga is a perfect complement that assists in excelling each other to higher levels and that is why most surf schools have yoga activities as well. The pair not only enhances your spirituality and physicality but also harmonizes your mind and body in perfect balance. So the next time, before you surf, practice a few minutes of yoga and breathing. Then you'll realize that surfing is not only a purely physical activity but can have spiritual liberation effects as well.

Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years in India but it has taken the attention of the west only in the late 19th century. Before it became popular, people in the United States thought that yoga was a mere peculiar activity invented to distort the body to come up with different positions for some strange reasons. Even until now, some people are still skeptical about yoga and refuse to undertake it. Sad to say, these people do not know the benefits they are missing.

If there is anytime that is best to begin a yoga practice, it is now. There are so many reasons why it is important for you to relive your life this very instant and yoga can be that ultimate solution.

First things first, not all myths about yoga are true. To set things straight, yoga is not a completely religious practice so you could set aside the religious issue right at the start. Yoga is also not about mind over body; it is about their "unity", which is in fact the literal translation of the word "yoga" itself. The practice is not about repetitively reaching your toes as many times as possible; it is about proper breathing and mental focus while maintaining a certain position. There is nothing superstitious about it. In fact, modern science has already long confirmed the benefits of practicing yoga and the list becomes longer as more researches are being conducted year after year on the benefits of yoga.

Yoga is not only an art and a science. It is a lifestyle, an exercise, a therapy, a preventive cure and a medical treatment all rolled into one. Yoga is a complete way of living that can improve your life and you as a person. It is the perfect physical and mental therapy to have the most blissful life you once thought you could never experience. That is why beginning yoga now will bring you that much closer to reaping the benefits of the practice as early as possible.

Yoga has a many physical benefits to offer. It increases the flexibility of the joints, tendons and ligaments of the body. It also tones your body absent the dreadful lifting of weights. The most apparent effect of yoga on the body is loss of weight that is why yoga is also a popular exercise. Yoga is in fact the most holistic form of exercise. It exercises those body parts that are not consciously worked out upon even by gym addicts.

Another revolutionary advantage of practicing yoga is its health benefits to the body. It massages and stimulates all organs of the body. It in effect becomes the perfect preventive measure to avoid diseases, including the life-threatening ones. By becoming more attuned to the body and what the body is telling you, some yoga practitioners have also attained a heightened awareness to impeding illnesses. Yoga also detoxifies the body because all the stretching makes the blood circulate to every part of the body, so every part of the body gets the right amount of oxygen supply. In fact, it has been known to relieve or improve different kinds of medical conditions like high blood pressure, asthma, diabetes, arthritis, heart diseases, varicose veins, obesity, respiration problems, body pain and chronic fatigue. Of recent, researchers have found incredible effects of yoga on HIV-diagnosed persons and the benefits are truly promising.

Most of the prevalent diseases in urban areas originate from a common problem and that is stress. Yoga can help to alleviate stress that work or school may bring you. It also has other mental benefits such as reducing body tension and boosting self-esteem. It increases self-awareness, focuses attention and relaxes, calms and clears the mind. It is because it allows the mind to concentrate on the self and the body, which brings about positive effects including improvement of mood and attitude to a better you. As a whole, it brings your emotions into equilibrium, giving you a more positive disposition in life.

But the truth of the matter is that these are mere "side effects" of the real benefits of yoga. Yoga makes you learn more about yourself, your mind and your body. It will give you a sense of enlightenment, where every inch of you meet in a dimensional space where everything is ecstatically immaculate. Its goal is to fuse every part of you, the physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual levels. In fact, it is no secret that yogis are generally happy people with a zest and appreciation for life.

The world is a busy place. Busy people usually live a routinary life that sometimes, they forget to take care of themselves. In fact, modern day diseases are mostly caused by lifestyle and work. Most people who acquire these illnesses are too busy to exercise and give time to themselves. To become a better person, you must act on it and the best time to do that is right now.

Change your life by changing your lifestyle and the best beginning could be through the practice of yoga. So, before saying "no", try giving yoga a shot and you may realize that it is the final answer you have been unknowingly searching for all along.

Gone were the days when women surfers only used wet suits and rash guards as surf wear. After the movie Blue Crush, surfing fashion has undergone a revolution. Most women surfers now want to look as good as Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez in the movie Blue Crush, active yet feminine. That is why, more and more women surfers now abandon the traditional unflattering wetsuit and wear a bathing suit instead, professionals 1 piece suits:
*Traditional one piece suits are good for every body shape.

*Tankinis: However, if you find 1 piece suits too outmoded, you can try wearing a tankini. A tankini is a two piece swim wear; a tank top and a bikini for the bottom. One good thing about tankinis is that they can give support to the torso while making you still fashionable. Just ensure that the top of your tankini clings to your body and does not hike up when you move or else your chest will be accidentally exposed.

*Bikinis: For the bold and daring is the bikini. If you think that you'll remain comfortably active on a board in it, then you may opt to choose it. In fact, some of the world's professional women surfers have been spotted and photographed surfing in a bikini.

Whatever style you choose, just make it sure that you are comfortable in it and it will suit your body type. In the last analysis, however, the one piece suit other than being the "safest" style is the best for surfing because they give full support for the upper part of the body, especially the back.

Bathing suits also come in all colors. You can choose from either plains or prints. However, if you are not sure which to choose, go for plain ones because they are safer than prints. If picking the right color is difficult for you, go for the basic colors like black, blue, white or red; or you can buy a bathing suit that matches the color of your eyes.

2. Support

A good bathing suit is one which can give full support to your breasts, padded or not. Always look for one made of spandex and/or nylon. It must be thicker but not too thick to restrict movement because thickness has also the tendency to decrease flexibility when you move your arms and legs. For your top, the best bathing suit would be halter tops and racer back styles because they give you support and freedom of movement while you paddle and stretch you arms wide when you attempt to balance on the board.

3. Comfort and Protection

Comfort is subjective. Before purchasing a bathing suit, ask yourself, "Am I going to be comfortable when I paddle and surf if I wear this bathing suit?".

Make sure that your bathing suit is simple without unnecessary materials such as belts, buckles, wires and knots. When you lay on the board, they will dig into your chest, which may become a little uncomfortable.

Pick a bathing suit that fits you snugly with its material clinging to your body as a second skin. It must also be stretchable but not so much that its edges already dig on your skin and create ghastly contours. As much as it is a bad sight to see too tight fitting bathing suits, it is also as bad to see loose ones especially at the part of the bottom where it may wrinkle. Another possible consequence of a loose bathing suit is that you might get in danger of showing what is not supposed to be shown. Because it does not cling tight to the skin, your top and bottom are exposed to the danger of being washed away by the waves, especially when they are particularly strong.

If you are not comfortable with your bathing suit, you may opt to wear board shorts over your bathing suit bottoms. If you think that spreading your legs as you balance yourself on the board will make you feel uncomfortable to stop you from giving full performance, then you can reinforce your attire with board shorts. Ascertain, however, that its bands are thick and elastic enough so that they won't be washed away.

4. Brand and Durability.

Before purchasing a bathing suit off the rack, check the seams first if they are stitched well. Brand is not really the test of durability but if you have more money to spare, buying a bathing suit from a well known brand may also be good. Good brands are known to make bathing suits from the finest fabrics and engineered to increase flexibility and strength.

A women's surf camp vacation may be fun provided that you are in your most comfortable state. Remember that surfing is an active sport, requiring constant movement and action. To get full performance, you must be in the perfect bathing suit.

But whoever said you can't surf and look sexy and feminine at the same time? If you are planning to join a women's surf camp vacation, forget about the wetsuit. What you need is a bathing suit that is chic to lay on the sand to get a tan but is not too trendy that makes it unsuitable for surfing.

Just keep the above tips in mind so that the next time you plan to buy a bathing suit, you'll never make the wrong decision. Have fun riding the waves in your most fashionable bathing suit!

If somebody asks you to name a beach in the world, one thing would normally come into your mind - Hawaii beaches. But what makes Hawaii memorable, that a visiting tourist would normally dream of going back to the islands over and over again? Hawaii is a place of enchantment. Far off in the Pacific lies this paradise on earth. It is year-round tropically hot and sunny; has rich native culture, beautiful flora, amazing volcanic formations; has rich history; and most of all it has the world famous pristine blue waters and powdery white sands beaches. Although Hawaii is a chain of small islands, there are a lot of activities that can be done whether it is on land, air or water.
Here are the top 9 things you must do on your Hawaiian Islands Vacation:
9. Visit World War II Remains: Pearl Harbor and USS Arizona
To get to know a place, you must first know its history. Visiting Pearl Harbor then is a must for all tourists to pay tribute to the war heroes who died during the bombing of December 7, 1941. This naval base used to play a major role in US military strategy and is a significant part of the nation's history. Today, it is one of the top tourist attractions in Hawaii. You may also proceed at the Arizona Memorial and for yourself the remains of the sunken USS Arizona below the glass floor. The best thing in touring these places is that the entrance is free to both!

8. Experience a Polynesian Luau
Get a taste of Hawaiian culture! A Hawaiian experience is never complete without attending a Polynesian Luau. It is a showcase of Hawaiian cuisine and culture through a feast of food and entertainment. The usual native dishes served are the kalua pork and teriyaki. You will also be delighted by the native entertainment- traditional Polynesian music, fire dancers and hula dancers in grass skirts.

7. Go Volcano Watching
Because Hawaii is popular for its volcanoes both dormant and active, take a drive to the Volcanoes National Park located at the south of the Big Island, where you can find two of the world's most fascinating volcanoes. First, Mauna Loa, the world's largest dormant volcano, reaching up to 13,677 feet high. Second, Kilauea, an active volcano, which produces steam and flowing lava and interesting volcanic formations. There are other volcanoes in Hawaii that you may visit but these two are really noteworthy.

6. See Waimea Canyon
Waimea Canyon is located at the Koke'e State Park. It is the largest canyon in the Pacific and is even nicknamed as "the Grand Canyon of the Pacific". It is around 10 miles long and 3,600 feet deep. The canyon is the creation of centuries of floods due to the overflowing of the rivers of the dormant Mount Waialeale. The walls of the canyon show traces of carving by volcanic lava, creating interesting patterns and formations.

5. Watch whales and dolphins
If you want to see whales up-close, go to the Big Island between the months of December and April. Some areas of the coast attract humpback whales after their migration in the cold regions. The island is also home for other species like killer whales and sperm whales. If you want to see dolphins instead, you can visit Oahu Island during the first week of May as plenty of dolphins draw together off the coast.

4. Enjoy a Helicopter Ride
If Hawaii is beautiful up-close, it is also gorgeous from an aerial view. Take a helicopter ride to see a bird's eye view of the entire state of Hawaii so that you will realize how such beautiful scenery can be packed in so little an archipelago.

3. Try Snorkeling
Every island of Hawaii has its own share of sea life. However, of all sites, the crescent-moon-shaped island of Molokini seen from the island of Maui tops them all. It is in fact a marine life park, listed in the top 10 of the best snorkeling spots in the world. There you can watch schools of color-adorned fishes, some species of which are unique to Hawaii alone. There is also another option for those who do not know how to snorkel. They can rent a boat with a glass bottom to view the sea life underneath!

2. Chill out on the beach
How could a Hawaii vacation be called a "vacation" without the beach? Everywhere you go in Hawaii, you see the beach, all in its sapphire waters and bleached sands. The most popular beach in Hawaii is the Waikiki Beach, located at the south of Oahu and the home of the most luxurious Hawaiian hotels. You have two choices in the beach -to engage in action in some sea activities or just lie back, relax and get a tan. Either way, you'll surely have fun!

1. Surf! Ride the Waves
Well, what else is on the top of the list? Surfing, of course! Hawaii is also very popular to surfers because of its waves. Although all of Hawaii have beaches where you can surf, nothing is better than the North Shore. There, waves can reach up to a height of 30 feet especially during the first and last 3 months of the year. If you are looking to learn how to surf, Maui is the choice destination. Warm waters and gentle waves make this island a learner's paradise.

A Hawaiian experience is truly unforgettable no wonder it keeps bringing in millions of tourists every year. What makes Hawaii more special is the warmth and hospitality of the Hawaiian people. There is no other place in the world where you are greeted with aloha and smiles. It truly is a tropical heaven on earth!

Who was the Queen of Surfing? Rell Sunn

Rell Sunn is one of the first and the most celebrated female pro surfers in the world. Sunn is known to have defied the macho-image of surfing during her time. She surfed her way through the gender barriers of the surfing world, riding the waves with her fellow male surfing contemporaries and even beating them in their own game.

Sunn is the epitome of the real aloha spirit. Perhaps it was fate itself that brought her to the sea as her middle name Kapolioka`ehukai means "Heart of the Sea". Her grace in the water makes her deserving with the title, "Queen of Surfing".

Early Life

Rell Sunn was born in July 31, 1950 in Makaha, Oahu, Hawaii being fourth among 5 children. She has a unique lineage, Hawaiian-Irish from her mother Roan and Irish from her father Elbert.

Because her home was close to the sea, she began surfing at an early age of 4 in 1954. What inspired her more to her interest in surfing is when she was able to get a taste of international surfing competition in the mid-1950s when surfers from all over the world gathered in Makaha.

Career and Achievements

At the age of 14 in 1964, she joined her first ever surfing competition. Because there was no category for women yet, she competed alongside with the boys and beat them all the way to the top. She continued to compete in the men's category until a women's category was set up later on.

In 1976, she founded the Menehune ("little people") Surfing Championships. Now, it is the biggest surfing competition for junior-levels in the world.

Sunn struggled as a young woman surfer amidst the male-dominated sport. That is why in 1979, she co-founded the Women's Professional Surfing Association along with other women surfing champs to give women a voice in the surfing professional community. It was triggered by a South African surfing competition incident, where she and her surfing buddies spent almost $2,000 to get there but only to find out that the prize for the women's was only $300 compared to the higher stakes in the men's division.

Sunn was a child of the ocean and an all water-woman. In her hometown Makaha, she learned to expertly swim, dive and canoe. Her talent in the water made her the first female lifeguard of Hawaii in 1977. Because she was a woman, at times, she would be ridiculed by the men whom she saves.

In 1982 when finally, an international professional surfing rating for women was established Sunn topped the International Surfing Association rating for women surfers.

Battle with Breast Cancer

In the same year while she was in California, during a pro tour, she noticed a lump in her breast. In 1983, a year after ranking No. 1 worldwide, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and the prognosis was only for a year. At that time, Sunn was only 32 years old and at the peak of her career.

Sunn spent the next 14 years of her life battling cancer into remission for three times. She also endured a number of operations including a bone marrow transplant. What appalled her the most when she had to undergo a mastectomy. She commented sadly that that she could never wear a swimsuit anymore, which according to her is Hawaii's ordinary everyday wear.

Cancer didn't stop her spirit as she engaged in different activities other than surfing like becoming a surf reporter, radio DJ, a physical therapist at a Wai'anae care home and a counselor at the Wai'anae Cancer Research Center, spreading awareness on breast cancer.

Death and Internment

On 1998, New Year's Day, her family and friends brought her to the shores in Makaha to take her last look at the sea, her second home. She believed in the Hawaiian idea of Auma Kua, that anyone who has died passing water shall form part of the ocean. The day after, January 2, 1998, Sunn passed away at the age of 37, leaving her only daughter, Jan.

At the memorial service, thousand of people flocked the beach. Her friends brought water and sand from all over the world and scattered them together with her ashes into the water, where people will always find her. A hundred surfers after the service took their boards and surfed the waves as a tribute to Sunn.

Awards and Tributes

Sunn is most famous for being the first surfer to rank no. 1 in the international women surfing category in the world. In August 1996, Sunn was one of the five women inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame in Huntington Beach, California. She was honored with a granite stone for her contributions and achievements in surfing and placed along with the likes of Duke Kahanamoku.

In the same year, she also received the Waterman Achievement Award from the Surf Industry Manufacturer's Association. An award-giving body called the Rell Sunn-Queen of Makaha award was also named after her, which is given to an individual annually for efforts in fighting cancer.

The life of Rell Sunn was also subject of several publications including the 2001 book written by Andrea Gabbard titled "Girl in the Curl: A Century of Women Surfing." In 2002, film makers Charlotte Lagarde and Lisa Denker released the award-winning documentary film about Sunn's life, "Heart of the Sea."

Today, every time a woman surfs - Auma Kua - she rides the waves with Sunn, whose spirit will forever remain in the sea. To surfers all over the world, Rell Sunn may be just another surfing superstar. But in Hawaii, where she breathed her first and last, she will always remain a blue blood - a queen, the Queen of Surfing.

Surfing is one of the most enjoyable water sports. There is nothing more exhilarating for a surfer than to ride the biggest waves for the longest time. However, people who want to learn how to surf, draw back from the sports even before trying a session because of fear of sharks.

Indeed, sharks are seen as hostile predators of the sea. They are large, strong, have saw-like teeth and are fierce looking to some. In fact, of all the world's sea predators, sharks are the most feared. But sharks are perhaps also one of the most misunderstood predators. Although it is true that there had been victims of shark attacks, there are a lot of misconceptions about these creatures.

If you are a surfing greenhorn, do not give up the enjoyment of surfing just because of an irrational fear of sharks. Here are 5 reasons why a fear of sharks should never stop you from learning to surf.

1. Men and Women do not form part of a shark's diet.

There is no such thing as a man-eating shark. Men are not staple foods of sharks. Although their diet comprises of meat including sea turtles, fish, seals, sea lions and whales, humans are absolutely not on their menu. Because their system has a slow digestion process, sharks are very choosy of what they eat. Other than the fact that men and women are too bony for sharks tastes, these animals prefer rich fat-content meats to maintain its temperature and to give it more energy, such as those coming from seals and sea lions.

2. Most cases of shark attacks involve mistaken identity.

Data reveals that 90% or more of shark attacks are mistakes. From below the waters, sharks sometimes erroneously identify humans as their common food. That is why in most incidents, after biting a person, sharks let go of the victim.

Another characteristic of sharks that are unknown to most people is that they are very curious animals. Once they see something not common to them, they usually test bite it. The act of biting is equivalent to the human act of feeling something with the fingers. If that unfortunate thing is a man and woman, he can be injured but in any event, the shark always retreats.

3. Only a few sharks have the potential to be dangerous.

It is a wrong to generalize that all sharks are dangerous. Out of 360 species of sharks, only 4 of these are responsible for unprovoked attacks on humans: the Great White Shark, Bull Shark, Tiger Shark and Oceanic Whitetip Shark. There is no evidence implicating the other species in unprovoked attack incidents, making the vast majority of sharks harmless to humans.

There is also no truth to the fact that the larger the shark, the more dangerous it is. The largest sharks such as the Whale and Basking sharks are meek creatures that feed only on planktons as food.

4. The odds of being attacks by a shark very, very low.

Sharks rarely attack humans unless provoked, making the risks of being attacked very little. In fact, only 15% of the shark species frequent the shallow waters or the coast, where anyone may possibly encounter them. According to the International Shark Attack File, a persons odds of being attacked by a shark is only 1 in 11.15 million. The risk of dying is only 0 in 264.1 million. That is why, in majority of shark attacks, the victim always survives and gets to tell the tale.

5. The dangers of sharks as we know are exaggerated.

Sharks have been adjudged to be evil creatures by mere bad publicity. There are more animals that cause human deaths such as flies, mosquitoes and bees. Perhaps to be blamed for their bad identity is the media, which most likely sensationalizes every news of a shark attack. Other than the media, Hollywood must also take part of the blame for first giving the idea about the legend of a man-eating shark as portrayed in movies like Jaws.

Surf without fear. Leave your shark fear at shore

Surfing is a great sport, which makes the beach more special. Feeling the breeze of the wind on your face and the saltiness of the water against your skin while you sweep the waves with a surfing board is complete freedom. If you are a person interested in learning how to surf but later changed your mind because of recent news of a shark attack or a scary shark movie, then that is very unfortunate.

Sharks should not be feared. There is no such thing as a perfect creature, sharks included. Sharks are part of nature's act to eliminate some members of certain species in order to balance nature. In Hawaii the locals even call these creatures "Aumakua" and they are believed to be guardians of the sea. In fact, it is the humankind who pose an unimaginably bigger threat to sharks as some of its species are already threatened and near extinction due to shark fishing and shark fin soup.

Sharks have ruled the sea for hundred millions of years even before people learned to surf. The ocean is big for both, for the former to roam and for the latter to surf. Now, you know that sharks do not relentlessly attack surfers and that sharks myths you know are not true, pick up that surfing board now and learn to ride the waves! What are you waiting for? Never let irrational fear get in the way of surfing because you do not know what you are missing.

Wahines Through The Ages. The History of Female Surfers

History and female surfers. Do you automatically think of Gidget? Either the blond Sandra Dee or the brunette Sally Fields? Those old fashioned bikinis and the enormous surfboards. The sun was always shining on that Californian beach with perfect waves with plenty of good looking guys and gals strutting around in their swimwear.

Gidget the movie was released in 1959, and the TV series in 1965. However, did you know that there are actually records of female surfers in Hawaii dating back to the 1600's? Back then, apparently the females and males were all equally fond of surfing and there was no discrimination between the genders while out in the waves.

The first famous female surfer was considered a Polynesian demi-god, or kupua. This extraordinary surfer was known as Mamala, and she was recognized as being a fantastic and brave surfer in the wildest of waves. Mamala could appear as many creatures including a great shark, gigantic lizard, and not the least, as a beautiful female. Beautiful and fearless, sounds much like the latest crop of contemporary female surfers, doesn't it?

In 1905, a surfboard dating back to the 1600's belonging to Princess Kaneamuna of Hawaii, was found in her burial cave. Centuries before Gidget! There are also many traditional Hawaiian chants about female surfers.

Mary Ann Hawkins was a famous female surfer in California in the 1920's. Faye Baird Fraser was the first female to surf in San Diego.

The first person to surf in Australia was a 15 year old girl called Isabel Letham. She was famously chosen by Duke Kahanamoku to surf tandem with him in 1914 at Freshwater Beach, just around the headland from the world famous Manly Beach.

By the late 1970's the A.S.P. annual circuit had a division for females. In this era, female surfers like Rell Sunn, Linda Merrill, and Jericho Poppler came to fame for their surfing prowess.

Surfing for girls didn't really seriously take off until the late 1980's. Prior to this, girls were expected to be decorative on the sand in their bikinis, working on their suntans. Their boyfriends surfed and the girls watched. That's just the way it was. Until this time surfing was considered by many to be a male's sport. In many surf breaks girls were not welcome. Their place was on the sand, or possibly on a boogie board or surf mat out of the way, closer to the shore with the kiddies.

By the late 1980's female surfing was really emerging. Lisa Anderson from Florida started a whole new surfing fashion by wearing board shorts with her bikini top. Today this seems like a sensible option while out surfing and the surfing companies all have huge ranges of board shorts for the surfing girl.

Surfing wear is now worn by all and sundry. You don't have to live anywhere near the ocean or surf to wear labels like Roxy. Female surf wear is now synonymous with good healthy living and vitality. Teenage girls the world over aspire to look like the Roxy poster girls. All the surf companies have been very quick to spot this and bring out their own labels for female surfers. This marketing campaign has been a roaring success with females all around the world.

Female surfing in the US is the fastest growing sport. There has been a dramatic increase in female surf camps like Surf Goddesses and SwellWomen and female surf schools like Maui Surfer Girls. Female surfers have come into their own and are an industry on their own. Now when we think of female surfers, images from the movie "Blue Crush" fill our minds. Gorgeous, healthy, strong girls in bikinis and board shorts surfing their hearts out. This movie has been responsible for inspiring and motivating another generation of young female surfers. "If you want to feel the rush you have to take the risk" was the film's motto.

No article on female surfers would be complete without a mention of Layne Beachley. As of early 2008, she has won a breathtaking 7 World Titles. She has the best statistics for any female surfer ever and has ridden a 50 foot wave, the largest wave ever ridden by a female. Layne Beachley's motto is "Never give up". Great motivation from a great role model for all girls out there.

The new crop of emerging and successful female surfers includes Australia's Stephanie Gilmore who is the current reigning ASP Women's World Champion. Sofia Mulanovich from Peru is the current leader on the 2008 ASP Women's World Tour. (As at March 2008.) Megan Abubo is holding up Hawaii's long reputation of producing world class surfers.

With Hawaii's long history of surfing it is fitting that the term for female surfers "Wahine" actually originates from Hawaii. Blue Crush was filmed there. Surfers from around the globe aspire to surf or watch Pipeline at its biggest. Hawaii is a prime location for perfectly situated female surf camps.

Female surfers have been around for centuries. Luckily for all us girls, female surfing is now perceived as a mainstream sport and industry. Today, female surfers are recognized and their needs and wants are being catered for. Feel the rush, take the risk, never give up. Inspiring words for all girls everywhere.

All I Ever Needed To Learn in Life, I Learned From Surf Etiquette

Life is a journey, and much like surfing, sticking to a few basic rules or courtesies can make the ride a lot smoother. The rules of surfing are universal codes. Let's see how surfing etiquette can so easily apply to us all in our every day life.

1. No Dropping In. "Dropping in" in on another surfer is one of the worst surfing crimes you can commit. Dropping in is where there is a surfer on a wave already and you hop up on the wave in front of them. If there is a surfer on a wave already, the wave is theirs, unless they fall off their surfboard or pull out of the wave.

This surf etiquette rule reminds us that in life we should respect and honor other people's choices in their life's purpose. As long as others are safe and not harming others, we should not get in front of them and take their dream (wave). Allow each person to choose their life's path and enjoy their ride. Everyone deserves the passage of a smooth journey to arrive at his or her dream destination.

2. Wait your Turn. Everyone is waiting for the waves, not just you. You need to be able to share the waves with everyone else. Being selfish will not win you any respect out in the ocean, or anywhere else for that matter.

Being aware of your place in the queue in your journey for anything is a great life skill. Don't jump in front of others and snatch what is rightfully theirs.

3. Don't get out of your Depth. You should know and accept your own limitations. If you are not fit enough or experienced enough to surf 15-foot waves, don't go out there. If the waves are too big for you, watch from the shore.

Much the same in the real world, we all need to realize our limitations. Some of these we can work on, and over time become more accomplished. As in surfing, it is smart to start off small and work your way up to the bigger stuff.

4. Respect the Locals. If you are surfing someplace new, take a few minutes to observe the scene before paddling straight out. The locals are entitled to surf their local break, as are visitors.

We all know the saying "When in Rome..". Respect for local customs is important in all walks of life. Traveling the world shows everyone the huge differences there can be in various local traditions. Visitors should always be mindful that locals might have vastly differing viewpoints to your own. Be tolerant of other's beliefs and customs, we are all entitled to our own views. Respecting others will garner respect for yourself.

5. Keep Control. Your surfboard can be a potential lethal weapon when out of control. No one wants to wear a surfboard in the head or face. Your surfboard is very heavy and usually has a sharp point. Combine this with a powerful surge of water and you get the picture.

In life's journey you need to be responsible for yourself and your well being. Take control of your emotions and health for a smoother, longer ride. It goes without saying, the healthier you are in all aspects of your life, the more enjoyable your life will be.

6. No Discrimination. People should be entitled to surf regardless of their gender or race.

No one likes to be judged on their rights just because of the way they look, or whether they are a male or female. Opening up your mind to others regardless of gender, race or religion can be great for expanding your soul.

7. Look out for others. If you see someone needing assistance, help them. The ocean can be very unforgiving, as can many other situations.

What goes around comes around. Assisting others in their moment of need doesn't take long, but could be the difference between someone having their journey cut off prematurely or reaching their destination safely.

8. No Rage. Don't get violent with the other surfers when things go wrong.

Breathe in with love and out with love. Count to ten and walk (or paddle) away. Save your energy for something else. These three points can be used in any life situation.

9. Right of Way. The surfer closest to the edge of the breaking wave always has the right of way. This means that the wave is theirs.

Much like anything else in this life, head on collisions should be avoided.
Give way when you need to. Unnecessary confrontations in life just take up energy that is best used for more positive activities. Take a separate path (or direction or wave). Parallel paths are beneficial.

10. Respect the Environment. The ocean is a powerful playground. You need to respect the waves. We all need to respect the fact that it should be clean and pristine. This can be easily achieved with the basics, like taking your trash with you. The ocean is not a dumping ground, and neither is the sand.

Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photos or memories.

How different would the world be if we all carried the surf etiquette rules into our day-to-day lives? Respecting the rights of others, and treating all others the way we would like to be treated ourselves. Being responsible for ourselves. Taking the time out to assist others. Cleaning up after ourselves. Sharing, waiting our turn, and not being greedy. Realizing our limitations. Accepting that Mother Nature is all-powerful, and should be treated with respect.

Life's journey will always be an adventure. Enjoy the ride of the wave. Smooth waves are the best, but not knowing what the next set of waves will bring always adds to the excitement of life.

Surfboard or Botox. What Really Keep You Looking Young?

"How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?" Forget about Botox and face lifts! The best way to appear youthful is to feel youthful.

Pack up your lethargy, fatigue and weariness. Put them in the suitcase with your bikini and sunscreen. When your surfing vacation is over, the bikini will probably be faded. You, however, will be looking and feeling years younger. Your fatigue will be a thing of the past. You will have a spring in your step and a zest for life that you had thought long gone.

Pack away those "old lady" hobbies. Unearth your bikini, sunscreen and surf wax. Join a sporting craze that unites everyone of all age groups, from tiny children to the elderly.

There is nothing more aging than a woman with the weight of the world on her shoulders. Go on a women surfer's vacation and rejuvenate yourself. The sport of surfing will have you energised and looking and feeling more youthful in no time.

Feel your responsibilities and burdens start to slide away after the invigorating surfing sessions in the glorious ocean. There can be nothing more rejuvenating than splashing around in the crystal water waiting for that next wave. The feeling of successfully sliding down the face of the wave is just the best in the world. Every surfer comes out of the water after a session with a big grin on her face. Your endorphins (those feel good hormones produced by exercise) will be pumping.

The extra exercise will have the blood pumping around your body, resulting in a beautiful healthy glow to your skin. Allow your true beauty to shine from within. Those endorphins will take years off your face. A truly happy and contented woman has a much more youthful appearance. Just look around your own friends and colleagues to see living evidence of this.

Enjoying time in the great outdoors is a fine way to stay young at heart. However, while out there surfing it is important to remember to apply your sunscreen. Organic ones are best as they contain less harmful chemicals, and often have added natural moisturizers in them. There is no point going on a surfing vacation and frying your skin. You do not want to come home with wrinkles or a bad case of sunburn as your holiday souvenir.

Another great piece of advice to halt the aging process is to indulge in your surfing in the less damaging times of the sun. Have you heard the phrase "10-3, beneath a tree"? Use the middle of the day for resting, shopping and massages. Smart women surfer's hit the waves first thing in the morning, before the wind comes up, and in the late afternoon. The late afternoon surfing session can be a great way to banish the frustrations of the day.

Catching a little sun through the sunscreen is an excellent way to help halt the process of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a nasty part of aging for all females involving the loss of the calcium in the bones, resulting in more fragile bones. "Dowager's humps" are an excellent example of osteoporosis in its more dramatic form. The calcium that you consume during the day actually needs the Vitamin D from the sun to be metabolized into a substance your body can utilize. Another great reason to start surfing and turn back the hands of time.

The physical activity of the surfing will have your upper arms toned in no time. Your whole body will be more supple and youthful looking. Use muscles that have been almost forgotten. Surfing is a great form of exercise for burning off any excess pounds. Which would you rather, the sweaty Stairmaster and the arm weights, or a glorious session in the crystal water with the waves?

There is nothing quite like the fresh ocean air to dispel all sad and negative thoughts. It is actually extremely difficult to remain depressed when on the beach. In fact, many people claim that the seaside is a cheaper and more effective alternative to therapy.

Why go on a plastic surgery holiday? Go on a women surfer's vacation instead. Learn, or perfect, a new sport and come home looking and feeling years younger. Return home from your vacation with extra life experience in your soul, not as a blank canvas with all life erased. Go home smiling, not with a paralyzed face full of toxic nasties.

Your job, your partner, your children and the housework can all wait. Leave the aging burdens of the daily grind at home. Reinvigorate yourself now. Botox or a surfboard? The answer to a more youthful appearance is obvious. Say "No" to injecting chemicals into your body. Say "Yes" to organic sunscreen, waves and surfboards.

Sunscreen, a bikini, a surfboard. Answer the call. Feel younger. Look younger. Surfing. The natural and healthy way to take 10 years off your face.
