Are All Data Recovery Companies Equal

Claims such as 15 and sometimes 20 years of data recovery experience is given as fact on their websites, but when you look closer at the incorporation data or when the website first went live you discover significantly lower time scales.

What does all of this actually mean? Why is this really important? After all if you are in the unfortunate position that you have lost data you just want it back quickly right? Well you may want to consider what the success rate of the company is, i mean how good are they at data recovery? Will they make the situation worse? Sadly there are companies out there which do not have the experience, knowledge, and equipment, their failed attempts can now either compound the recovery further, render the media unrecoverable or as in some cases we have observed maliciously and wilfully destroy the media further to stop any possible recovery attempt by another lab, yes it is shocking but this practice does happen!
Choosing the right data retrieval company is absolutely essential, if the data has any value whatsoever such as personal photographs or business data such as accounts or databases then you must select wisely.

Compare the scenario to your health, after all surely you would not take the absolute advice you discover from an Internet search then self medicate? Dangerous stuff indeed! However it happens regularly clients either try a DIY approach, a colleague or friend, to "just have a look" or select a company on a very narrow criteria such as costs alone, with the lowest figure firm winning your attention.
True, costs are extremely important, not least because of the current credit crunch the UK and wider world are going through at present, however the abiding point must surely be , can they actually do the job?

So how can you select from the plethora of options available?

Knowledge. Yes information from friends, family, colleagues, Blogs and groups will give recommendations and off course not so glowing and downright avoidance information regarding who they chose and the actual outcome of their data loss.

The usual suspects

Tell tale signs of all is not as it seems with a prospective DR firm can be they require a diagnosis fee, at first this seems very reasonable, but when they come back with "sorry your hard drive is unrecoverable" you get that awful sinking feeling you may have been duped, imagine a business model in which the company simply looks at media all day long for a modest fee, their very happy unfortunately data rarely is recovered.

Another issue is parts or spares, this is a truly legitimate area, but with a caveat, the actual cost of the parts and for what exactly? Hard drives are unique each and everyone is unique to itself this presents challenges in the sourcing of some components, we are aware that some data recovery companies are simply overcharging for parts required and can often run into hundreds of pounds when the actually part may be only 30-50 pounds, the hook point is this, We can recover your data, however we need to purchase spares, this is wholly misleading unless the company are absolutely 100% sure that the parts will recover the data, as in some instances the procedure can fail for a number of reasons, this must be outlined and explained to you so that you can make an informed decision as to proceed or not.

What data will you actually recover?

A full recoverable folder and file listing must be emailed to you before you make any final decisions, if the all important stuff is not recovered, why pay?

Chios is known as the fragrant flower of the Aegean and is located in northeast Aegean Sea of Greece and is the fifth largest of all the Greek islands, sitting just five miles from the Turkish coast. Chios is a mountainous island with its highest peak Pelineo.

Chios not traditionally a tourist favorite is gaining a reputation as an island sought by package tourists, with crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches and good facilities. Its beautiful and significant beaches like Komi, Daskalopetra, Agia Markella, Vroulidia etc. which are organized cosmopolitan resorts make the island special. Around the rest of the island, there are an amazing array beaches there to be sampled.

Things to see

There are more than 30 monasteries and hundreds of churches in Chios. Probably the major historical attraction on Chios is the monastery, Nea Moni, about 11 kilometers from the city of Chios. It was founded in the 11th century when three hermit-monks found a miraculous icon of the Virgin here and they persuaded the Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX Monomachus to build a magnificent monastery and church on this site. The 11th century church is still considered one of the finest examples of ecclesiastical architecture in this part of the Greek Orthodox world and its mosaics are also highly regarded.
In Chios, also, there are several museums. Some of the most attractive are the following:

The Byzantine Museum which was housed in the 19th century on the central square of Chios and contains a collection of items and findings that have been discovered on the island and donated from private collections.

The Palace of Ioustiniani stands between the Castle of Chios and the main square of the capital. The exhibition displays Byzantine murals, post Byzantine icons, small works of arts and Byzantine and Genoese sculptures.

The Maritime Museum is located in the centre of Chios and explains its maritime tradition by displaying various items that give historical information about this tradition and about the development of shipping commerce in the area.

Chios is also known for its production of "masticha". The small villages of Pyrgi and Mesta are just two of the villages known as "mastihohoria", where their production of mastic, a substance once used like chewing gum, saved them from the Turkish army's wrath. The villages are enclosed within walls and are best explored on foot, these towns, built like mazes, have a wonderful atmosphere to them. Mastic chewing gum can also be bought in these villages

When to come

The island's climate is warm and moderate, categorized as temperate Mediterranean, with modest variation due to the stabilizing effect of the surrounding sea. Average temperatures normally range from a summer high of 27 Celsius to a winter low of 11 in January. The weather is fairly good from May to October and the sea is not chilly and this makes it perfect for a summer destination.

August is the month on which most of the traditional festivals take place. These are mostly celebrations of Greek Orthodox Saints accompanied by food and drink and traditional Greek dances until early morning hours with participants from all age groups, nationalities and social classes. These festivals are not to be missed. On the other hand August is really the month that almost all Greeks take their summer vacation to island destinations. Even Chios can get overcrowded in August. If relaxing vacation is what you are after August in Chios is not your best choice.

Greece is quickly making itself known as a need-to-visit tour site. With its excellent all-season climate, beautiful landscapes, and great tourist spots, visiting Greece is truly a no-brainer. In ancient times, it was the center of modern democracy, culture, and the arts, and it retains this high status even today. Being a city of both ancient influences and modern conveniences, Greece is sure to have something in it for everyone.

If you're the kind of person that likes to relax and just experience nature, the warm Mediterranean country offers thousands of miles of beaches to explore. The soothing turquoise waters and long stretches of white sand create ideal places to just lie back and enjoy yourself. Secluded coves surrounded by gigantic cliffs and palm and pine tree forests abound in Greece, and one should definitely see the country's beautiful seashore in their lifetime, it's an experience you can't forget.

If sight-seeing is more of your thing, no worries: Greece has lots to offer. Towering monuments to ancient Greek gods like Zeus and Athena still stand tall, a testament to the great architectural prowess of the early Grecians. The sophisticated structures of famous buildings like the monumental Acropolis and Temple of Poseidon are truly beautiful sights to behold. Intricate columns and carefully crafted sculptures also flourish. Many modern cities like Washington D.C. borrow the concepts first put into use by the Greeks and their Ionic, Doric, and Corinthian columns are still major inspirations in current architecture.

Greece is also a country of wonderfully rich culture, stemming from the fact that it was the center of sophistication in the ancient world. Traditions, language, music, foods, and wine are all major parts of the Greek culture and leave a lasting impression on all tourists that visit it. Visitors can listen to traditional Greek folk music, Dimotiko Tragoudi, which originated in the early 9th century while partaking in the rich cuisine of the country. Known for its high-quality products and amazing, rich taste, Greek food is some of the best in the world. Unique herbs and spices dot traditional dishes like paidaka, tender and juicy lamb ribs, and pastitsio, a dish reminiscent of Italian lasagna. The hearty Greek diet is also accompanied by some of the best wines, many locally produced in family-owned vineries.

In short, Greece has much to offer to prospective travelers. Stunning beaches, towering monuments, advanced culture, and delicious dining are just some of the many attractions of the country. The tour industry in Greece is becoming more and more advanced and accessible to the average person, as opposed to when only high-class citizens could travel there just decades ago. This is yet another reason to observe the wonders of the country. Online all-in-one booking sites make traveling there even easier. Whatever your reasons are, visiting Greece is a remarkable experience that will go above and beyond your expectations.

Projects, clients, and deadlines at work can be very stressful at times. Every once in a while we need to take a break and clear our mind from the troubles. Many people have found that playing online games for a few minutes can help them relax and they do go back to their job refreshed. Lately I have discovered 3 games that have such an effect on me as well. I invite you to try them out and see for yourself.

Bloxorz

In the mood for a stylish logic game? Check out Bloxorz, an interesting and fresh foray in the puzzle genre. In it, you control a rectangular prism that needs to get inside of a square hole. While this premise may seem simple, complicated terrain, varied switches, collapsing blocks, and the ever-present threat of falling off of the board impede you at every move.

The levels in Bloxorz start off simple and progress into the mind-numbingly hard. The fact that the block you control is a rectangle makes it difficult to maneuver through tight spaces and you'll find yourself plummeting into the abyss quite a few times. The game never feels repetitive, though, because you eventually get into the mindset that you NEED to finish the level. It's challenging but not insanely so; it gets fairly easy to complete after you get the hang of it.

In short, Bloxorz is a very stylish and professionally made game. Even if you don't normally like puzzles, this is something you need to check out, there's nothing else like it out there. A friendly warning, though: don't play Bloxorz if you don't have much spare time because you're going to want to ride it all the way to the end.

Bubble Shooter

Reminiscent of puzzle games like Bejeweled, Bubble Shooter is an interesting way to pass some time. In the game, you control (obviously) a bubble shooter that fires different colored spheres. Your goal is to destroy a wall of multicolored bubbles that advance quickly upon you by matching up groups of three spheres before they reach the bottom.

The gameplay is quite amusing and offers lots of strategic options. You can bounce the bubbles you shoot off of walls to get better angles for your shots as well as get combos. Because bubbles that aren't attached to anything automatically disappear, building up groups of bubbles that can be taken out with one shot is satisfying. Shooting is just as hard as it should be, presenting an experience that's easy to get into but hard to master.

The sounds in the game are perfectly suited for it. There's a gratifying series of cartoonish pops when you knock out a huge combo and a nice "whoosh" sound for every shot fired.

Overall, Bubble Shooter is a hard yet fun experience, presenting something for all gamers to enjoy. If you're ever in the need of a good time-waster, look no further: Bubble Shooter is what you need.

Raiden X

Based on an older series of arcade games, Raiden X is a fast-paced and frantic scrolling shooter. In it, you control the "Raiden Supersonic Attack Fighter" whilst battling hordes of enemy aircraft. Five main powerups exist in the game, including various kinds of lasers, missiles, and bombs.

Gameplay consists of flying through levels while trying to avoid death. This can be caused by many things: kamikaze pilots, bullets, and running into a wide variety of other planes. Hundreds of missiles can proliferate on the screen at once, creating a frenzied atmosphere that engrosses you in the game. Your own arsenal of armaments is nothing to laugh at either, with multiple upgrades available for each weapon. Another cool feature of Raiden X is the boss battles at the end of each level. These are particularly challenging and have some cool surprises and twists in them that keep the game fresh.

Raiden X keeps the formula simple: shoot baddies, fly around dodging bullets, and collect upgrades and powerups. This, combined with great explosions, nice special effects, and fitting sounds, makes Raiden X a true winner. If you like shooting stuff and having fun (as most of us do), then try out Raiden X, you won't regret it.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has been out for some time now but still has not yet received the proper attention from either household users or businesses. Many people have yet to discover the advantages of VoIP compared to the regular phones.

VoIP is a technology that has been commercially available since Level 3 introduced its "softswitch" 10 years ago. In the early years the technology was new and many shortcomings were stopping people from widely adapting such solutions. Lately VoIP has matured a lot and it is a worthy competitor to a regular phone service. Minimum you need a fast internet connection and a PC in order to take advantage of VoIP. Companies might go for more advanced services which include the service to be running to what appears like a regular phone receiver.

Advantages

1. Free or very heap phone calls. Most VoIP providers offer free phone calls to users within the network and the rates to regular analog phones are almost free. Rates for local calls and calls to mobile phones are generally high but still lower than standard phones. International call rate is were one will see the most savings when using VoIP telephony. No more monthly fixed charges of the local telephone companies.

2. Per second charging. Most VoIP companies will charge you for the exact amount of seconds used and they will let you know how much you have spend on each call at the moment you are making it.

3. An international phone. A VoIP phone does not have country boundaries. You can take it with you wherever you go. And the same rates apply regardless of where you are when you use it.

4. 3-way calling, call forwarding, callback services and caller ID are usually standard features (free) with VoIP companies. Those are normally charged extra for, by the traditional telecommunication companies (telcos) .

No system is without its disadvantages

1. Depended on a high speed Internet connections. When the Internet is congested or the connection is slow, phone call quality can be deteriorated and of course when there is no Internet connection a VoIP call cannot go through.

2. VoIP voice quality is in general lower than standard phones. Internet connection speeds determine how fast the voice packets can be transmitted, computer processor speeds determine how fast the packets can be compressed and uncompressed, the choice of codecs used for the compression also take a part in the general quality of the service. As a rule of thumb the faster the connection and the fastest the computer (together with good compression codecs from the VoIP company) will make up for a service that is generally regarded as acceptable.

Overall, VoIP is a great low cost alternative for communication. VoIP are not just a fab that is going to go away. Its not just for kids to talk to their friends on their PCs. Many companies that depend on international communication are already making use of such services in order to lower their operating costs. Major corporations have done some significant research to fix the disadvantages of VoIP service, as well as improve the overall quality. With all of the improvements continually going on with VoIP, it will soon be accepted by everyone as an acceptable alternative to PSTN.

Data Recovery FAQ

Not so long ago, about 5 years say, there were a bunch of data recovery firms which you could choose from, today this is very different; try typing "data recovery services" into Google, you will be astounded by the results, overwhelmed as to choice; how come you may ask?

In the last year alone, many so called DR firms have sprung up from nowhere with 20 years of DR business history! Clearly this is not possible and suspect and should be examined in great detail, as DR is a complicated business and cannot be learned "overnight".

Recommendation is obviously a great place to start as to who you will allow to look at your media containing your critical or precious data, ask friends and colleagues if they have been in a similar situation, who did they use and what was the outcome?

If you do not have any recommendations to work with, then perhaps this basic list will help you;
1. How long have the DR firm been in business? 4-5 years is a minimum.
2. Have they an independent testimonial page? In other words a website which is not connected with their site where previous clients have posted un-edited comments on the service they received.
3. Will they send you a file listing of recoverable files before you commit to any fees?
4. Are they a genuine DR company with clean room facilities near you ? (no long shipping which may damage your media further), or are they simply a reseller for a DR firm?
5. Do they offer any guarantee? For instance no data no fee, fixed costs, data security and no hidden charges?
6. Are they qualified? What experience do they have with your particular media?
7. How long will recovered data be held for? Can duplicate copies be obtained?, will the recovered data be securely destroyed following your safe and quantified delivery?

Following this basic list you should be able to find a suitable company which will recover your data in a cost effective and timely manner, above all else when you are faced with such a scenario it may be easy to select the first web site that you come across, and this is where another issue many lie, especially if you select from Google Adwords the first choice, does that mean they will fill all the criteria as a bove laid out?, possibly not as they have paid to be in that position and not organically built the web site and reputation over a period of time.

A wagging finger with the old cliche "you should have backed up" is not what you want to hear from the company which will be dealing with your hard drive failure, so customer service is also a very important step, create a shortlist of 3 companies then call them; a free phone number is welcome and also shows commitment, call them up explain your current situation, then let them explain their services to you, at some point you can then discuss the above points and make your mind about whether the company will suite your needs.

9 Free Webmaster Tools You Can Fall In Love With

Webmasters and developers don't need a whole lot of money to spend on tools in order to work efficiently and be productive. Here is a list of free tools that help me run my everyday webmaster chores.

Notepad++

Dreamweaver and such designing tools might have become very advanced in the recent years but I am still far from satisfied with them. I prefer to do the coding with a simple text editor and be in total control of the code and not end up with unnecessarily long code. Recently I discoverd Notepad++ which has the few bells and whistles that are desired by hard core programmers such as code highlighting, Regular Expression Search/Replace support, capability to extend functionality with plugins and nice depository of contributed ones. Worth your attention.

Filezilla

If you are like me and don't use WYSIWYG editors to do your HTML/CSS designs then you are probably need or are already using a standalone FTP client to upload/download files to and from your server. Filezilla is a free tool that I have been using for some time and has not failed me. New version 3 has lots of new features, if you are FTPing stuff often maybe you should check it out.

Xampp

XAMPP is an apache server distribution that integrates php, mysql, phpmyadmin and a bunch of other great open source projects into an easy installation. It can be used on production servers to host one's sites but I mostly use it locally to code and test my html/css/php projects. Its easier to develop locally because there is no need to upload files on servers everytime, and only upload when your project is complete. It can be installed on Windows/Linux and lots of other platforms and if you are serious about developing you should get it installed in your computer and start playing with it.

Google Analytics

Google analytics is a free website statistics package that anyone can easily integrate into their website in a few minutes. Analytics once installed on your website it gathers data and presents you with reports about which sites your visitors come from, what country they live in, how long they stayed on your site, which pages were more popular and a whole lot of reports that you will likely not need another statistics package for you site. Those statistics are vital to the progress of any site in order to understand a site's audience and find things that might need to be improved. You can create as many analytics accounts as you like (unlimited number of sites) as long as your total pageviews don't exceed the monthly allowance of 5 million.

Firefox

Mozilla Firefox is not only a great browser to surf with. Firefox was build with extensibility in mind and has given developers a way to extent its functionality with add-ons. Add-ons can enhance the capabilities of Firefox and enhance the browsing experience. There is a whole lot of add-ons in the Mozilla repository that can help you with task such as bookmarking, searching, social interaction, developing, news reading, downloading to name just a few categories. Some of the following favorite tools of mine are actually Mozilla Add-ons. Its definetelly worth your attention.

SeoQuake

Seoquake is a Mozilla add-on that was created with the SEO professionals in mind. It will help you gather important statistics about a website or web page with the touch of a button. Such statistics include PageRank, indexed pages, google backlinks, Cached date etc. One can also extend it/configure it to gather other important statistics from online services not already included in it.

Firebug

Firebug is yet another Mozilla Add-on; a webmaster tool that can help you understand and debug your javascripts. It has so many bells and whistles that I am thinking of devoting a whole article on it. I will just mention the features that I use myself; Inspecting and editing HTML and CSS on the fly, debugging and running javascript on the fly, monitor network activity but there are many others. Here is a video tutorial I recently found that will help you get started with firebug debugging

Gimp

Gimp is an open source image manipulation package that can help you with photo retouching, image composition, format conversion and animations among other things. Its not likely to replace adobe photoshop any time soon but its a free alternative that has found many followers and through its plugin architecture promises to built the only image manipulation tool you will ever need. Some of its features are presented in a way of a presentation but nothing can convince you better than to actually install it and try it on your own.

Drupal

Drupal is a content management system much like wordpress but a lot more extensible. Wordpress is a good CMS (content management system) for simple sites and even though it has many plugins to extend its capabilities I would not recommend building anything other than a blog with it. Drupal on the other hand was built in such a way to be extensible. A programmer digging in its code will appreciate its flexibility, code quality, and modular design and simplicity for writing a new module. Drupal is was build from the ground up a tool for building community sites, and as a result it has many features to support such sites but it is also capable for supporting standard websites. Its learning curve is quite steep but it pays off in the end. Worth more than a look from you.

Hard Drive Failure Factors

Magnetic storage media or hard drive and disks as they are more commonly known today offer almost exponentionialy increasing storage for computer users needs today, such as is required for video, audio and picture files. Adhering to the same footprint and physical size hard drives were first designed with, they have grown massively to currently 1TB (1 Terabyte) for a single hard drive, n relatively short time frames.

Moore's law as it is often called which predicts the pace of CPU speeds and suggests that CPU speed would double every 18 months (something which it has done its inception by Mr. Moore of Intel) there has been no such "law" or roadmap for hard disk drives. All of this extra storage capacity has been very welcome by computer users; however there has been a tradeoff with ever increasing storage capacities and overall longevity of the media, and ultimately the reliability of media holding your all important media.

Spinning magnetic storage media are prone to several areas of weakness some of which is inherent to the internal structure and design, other failure points are external. Hard drive technology is based on a electro mechanical design with spinning platters often made of glass or ceramics then coated via a process called splutter, this layer then is encoded and decoded via a head stack assembly which operates to very precise and repeatable accuracy, a typical modern hard drive will operate to less than 1 micron.

The major internal issues that can be instrumental in failure and data loss are Head Crash, Heat and Power Cycling.

Head crash

This is when the head assembly comes into direct contact with an area of the surface media it is not designed to (some hard drive technology allows the head to land on the inner portion of the media), the contact damage may be exacerbated if the head has suffered from damage and or there may be oxides or other contaminant within the disk enclosure, head crash symptoms usually manifest themselves via unusual noises such as clicking, ticking, scratching or clunking the media must be switched off immediately to preserve any possibility of data recovery. Areal density and bits per inch have squeezed the technology such that inevitably the tolerances of the media are very precise.

Heat

The ambient temperature of the computer system and the hard drive itself also are a concern for data integrity and longevity a simple hard drive cooling fan could save you from data loss, as hard drive media both internally and externally are prone to failure to heat.

Power cycling

Power cycling to hard drive media can result in hard disk failure and can be completely eliminated via a reputable UPS system.

There is nothing more frustrating than losing the important documents or data that you've spent so much time creating. If you have suffered such a loss you know how it feels. The best way to prevent data loss from happening is to be prepared for it. Thus, backuping up your important data on a CD DVD or external Hard drive, using uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units and having in place hard drive cooling fans are crucial actions that can save lots of headaches.

In case of emergency

In case you find yourselves in the unfortunate but likely position of hard drive failure and are unable to recover your data any other way then professional data recovery services exist that can help you get your valuable data back. These services are relatively inexpensive for the data that you probably want to recover. On top of that they usually charge you only if they succeed in retrieving your data.
