Why is it that when someone mentions or repeats the word bingo, an image of a group of senior citizens springs to our minds? Possibly because the Gala's attract more people over the age of 65 years and give them the opportunity to socialise outside of their homes. Furthermore, they cater for large groups of people to play together and provide refreshments making it feel like an enjoyable night out.

However, bingo was once a game played by many people of all ages back in the days of when it was relatively unheard and before it became a global activity. The game is quite different from what it was once played as and was something that not everyone was involved with. Its origins are found in Italy of 1530, whereby it was not called bingo but it was called Lo Giuco Del Lotto d'Italia, which has continued to be played on Saturdays in Italy.

As the Catholic Church was a major influence on the country, they were against any form of gambling. However, this did not stop the game from becoming widespread. The game very quickly spread out to France around 1778, whereby the rules for gambling were considerably lapsed in comparison to Italy, even though the French Church was against the game. The game was successfully received by the French citizens who helped boost the popularity of subsequent games similar to this one.

The bingo game at this point was later played over a table divided into nine vertical columns and three horizontal lines. The format is similar to the modern day 90-ball game. Each line had five numbered square and four blank squares laid out randomly. The first line was numbered 1 - 10, followed by numbers 11 - 20 on the second and this followed through each line until reaching the number 90. These had a unique configuration and were played in a similar fashion to the modern day game.

The game thrived for more than a century, before it spread across the Atlantic into the U.S by the 1920s, where it very quickly adopted its own American style. At the time the game was called beano, because players would mark their cards with beans rather than a pen when their numbers were called. This was the beginning of a new system of playing, whereby wood chips were used before. The new system consisted of drawing out the cards from a matchbox at random, calling out the numbers and placing the bean on your card.

Although the game was less pronounced, it would not be until 1929 when a man named Edwin Lowe popularised the game having randomly discovered it upon his travels. He took on board the game and shared the experience with friends and family. However, instead of shouting out beano, the word bingo came out to which the name stuck with the game. Lowe believed that the name bingo was catchier and suited the game well.

Soon Lowe had popularised the game by advertising the game and using the help of a Mathematician, Carl Leffler, he was able to randomise the numbers 900 times (causing the unfortunate demise of Lefflers mental health upon completing this task). Leffler had produced 6,000 different bingo cards, which boost its expanding popularity in as much as attracting Catholic Church officials for using the game to raise Church funds.
Subsequent years after these events saw the game grow from humble beginnings and lesser known pronouncement to a global multi-million pound industry.

In Praise Of Privet Hedging

Harry Potter's cousins, the Dursleys lived in Privet Drive and, by association, gave it a bad name. Actually privet is a well-named plant; well grown, it forms one of the thickest privacy hedges there is.

Like most plants, privet prefers a nice, warm, sunny bed. Who doesn't? And grown in such a place, it will reward you well. However (and unlike most plants), it is also prepared to make a good fist of growing in deep shade. It will need clipping a little more often to keep it dense, and the foliage will be a shade deeper green, but it will produce an excellent hedge.

Read any planting instructions and you are likely to meet a phrase similar to 'incorporating plenty of well rotted organic matter when planting'. Well, plant privet hedging in good stuff and it roars away. Some say almost too much so, complaining that it is too bushy and lush. Each to their own, but it also does pretty well in poor soils. The sort of dust one often finds in front gardens in towns, exhausted by those lime trees that drip sticky stuff all over newly washed cars. This won't stop the sticky stuff, but it will grow in tired soils better than most plants.

At some level drainage is important to all plants - almost everything likes an 'open, well drained soil' and privet is no exception. To be fair it hates standing water (although I have seen them hanging on in an Irish peat bog), but it will grow perfectly well in wet ground that puddles when it rains, takes an age to dry and that goes brick hard when it does and stays like that through those memorable hot summers we all enjoy now climate change has reached the UK!

Talking of heat and dust, this plant is a pollution specialist. It handles traffic fumes, city dirt, acid rain and all the other things that most hedge plants hate as if they were food and drink.

Speed of growth in a hedging barrier is fairly important - a dense hedge is of less use after one has died than before... but fortunately this is one plant that does not hang about. Once established (often in the first year of planting) privet hedging plants can easily grow at two feet (60 cms) in a season. That speed of growth also keeps it relatively pest free - there is always more privet than insects that eat it.

While there are some evergreens that grow faster, non clip better. Privet hedging is the poor man's topiary plant - the stems take a long time to go woody, so they are easy to cut making straight edges and clean curves a doddle. And because it will regrow from old wood, mistakes with the hedge trimmer disappear in a trice. None of those nasty brown patches you see on Leylandii hedges!

One thing stands certain. Wherever you grow privet as a hedge, you will quickly produce a barrier that is pretty impenetrable to humans. By the way, a tip if you want to keep dogs or cats out, or in, is put chicken wire along the line of the hedge when you are planting it. The privet grows through it, anchoring it in place and within a very few months it is completely invisible. Privet roots are so thick, that digging under the wire is beyond most animals (except anteaters).

Clipping two or three times a year is about all the care and maintenance that a privet hedge demands. It will appreciate a mulch of well-rotted organic matter, and it will repay being watered in a drought, but these are luxuries. Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium) in its green and variegated forms is simply the most self-sufficient evergreen hedging plant there is.

Putting Together A Classy Dinner Party

When setting the table up for a dinner party, usually the most important thing going through one's mind in that present moment is making it look presentable and putting up a good spread. The food preparation is the main task of the day, because this is something one should have had planned carefully in advance. Whilst the food must taste good to each individual, food presentation is vital because it must be appealing to the eyes.

Buying good tableware does necessarily mean one needs to spend out masses amounts of money on expensive chinaware or dinner sets. It all depends on the kind of sets you buy, the style of the tableware and the quality of the material. These restaurant chefs opt towards simple decor, neutral colours and a variation in dinner sets. Many people do not choose to have starters in a restaurant and tend to gear towards a mains and a dessert.

Furthermore, restaurants do not always buy sets that are specific to the kind of meals you have, such as chefs do not always buy specially designed plates for starters only, and opt towards using mains dishes. Not all dishes come complete with a small plate. Soup starters are usually served on a large bowl, with a large rounded soup spoon that can often resemble a miniature ladle. These are normally white and made from fine china.

At a dinner party, the tableware you choose does not have to be so elaborate and expensive. This does depend upon the kind of guests you have invited, very often people choose to use the best set for the very special occasions such as wedding anniversaries, graduation celebrations or birthdays. For others one or more of these occasions could not justify using their best sets, therefore more than usual the sets tend to stay packed up in their boxes for years to come.

Informal dining gives more scope for creativity when using tableware, for example using large wine glasses for desserts, or odd shaped bowls for soups and starters. Some table settings are diverse enough to mix and match the colour scheme, perhaps by using blue plates set with red glasses and coated cutlery. The safer option is to use an inexpensive cream or white table cloth and plain looking dinner set. However, using plates that are black is also a great way of creating a more modern and chic look about the dinner table.

Ambient lighting is a great way of setting the mood for a romantic meal; however, if you do choose to use candles for a group dinner party then it is important you stick to using plain white table cloths so that people are able to see what they are eating. Silverware is a safe bet for cutlery. These do not have to be intricately designed, plain ones will suit any set design, although sometimes you may decide to use plastic edged or coated cutlery for that added luxury.

Centrepieces are good if they are small, otherwise they do take up a lot space on the table and get in the way of conversations with people at the opposite end. The growing trend these days is to put the food out on a plate for people in an impressive fashion, however in informal situations it is much more sociable to have a selection laid on the table for others to help themselves with. If you decide not to do a starter, whilst the guests wait for the food to be prepared it is worth investing in large platters whereby people can enjoy dipping into some pre-made canapes or finger food on napkins.

How Aromatherapy Oils Give You Great Looking Skin

Everybody have their fair share of bad skin days, as well as bad hair days! The worst part of it all is that the days that you have strikingly perfect looks is the day that no one notices and you stuck indoors on a Sunday afternoon! How sods law works in mysterious ways! However, there is a trick to keeping your skin looking youthful and healthy. Unfortunately this is not a quick fix method that uses foundation and powder, but more like a regimented skin care routine.

Aromatherapy oils are great for relaxation of the body and use in massaging, but it is also good for health and beauty. What most people do not know is that aromatherapy oils, although used for burning over candles in homes, is also great for treat problem skins and improving the look of dull dry skin. How one may ask, does this claim to do this? Simple, when using these oils one must massage them into the skin. Massaging stimulates the blood flow which will immediately create a healthy glow once this is done of the face.

The obvious long term treatment for good skin is to drink water, eat healthy and take part in regular exercising. However, there are plenty of people who do not do all three and only make do with one or two out of three routines. Using carefully selected oils will help in keeping the skin from going sallow and dull. Often the skin can lose its elasticity and end up with some very dry areas which also lose its colour.

The best step to start with the skincare routine is to being by researching your herbal blends. Which oils are recommended for the skin and what is the best method of using this? Some people use aromatherapy creams, lotions and potions to get the best out of the skincare regime. However, some may not be genuinely organic and can contain other chemicals and additives that could be harmful to the body. The best thing to do in this case is to have a look at the content of the product before buying it off the shelf.

Another way of using these oils is by diluting them slightly in water and rubbing over the face. Massaging in even strokes, around the cheeks and in an upward motion on the neck will help awaken the skin and stimulate the blood flow. A good use of product comes best with the same product facial washes and toners after. Usually there is no need to put on any moisturiser afterwards, however, one can use the oils to keep the skin moisturised overnight. This can be done on a daily basis or once a week, as long the skin gets that massage and stimulation of blood flow.

The best products to use are aloe vera oil and evening primrose oil. These are great for restoring the skins natural supple condition, along with reviving dull areas. Other herbs are ginseng, shea butter, comfrey, lady's thistle, rosehip and jojoba. Some of these aromatherapy oils are often found in products in high street brands which contain a concentrated amount of the oils.

The Process Of Infection Control

The medical industry is one that requires a lot of focus and money in keeping hospitals and health care centres at its strictest levels of hygiene. Infection control is amongst the top on the list of hygiene procedures, with the recent levels of superbugs spreading fast around the hospital wards. The government and NHS have tightened their regimes in instigating preventative methods for the spread of infections such as MRSA and C-diff.

However the infection control procedure is not an easy task to perform or maintain, because whilst standard methods may prevent and remove possible parasites that can cause much of the infections, it may not remove or prevent others from developing or spreading. Monitoring the cleanliness procedure helps to determine the main problems of infection spreading, how best to prevent it and what areas are prone to infection outbreak if proper practises are not adhered to.

Infection is spread through a number of different ways such as inhalation, ingesting, inoculation, contact with other infected objects or patients and transplacental contact. When monitoring infection control procedures it is essential for people to know that these microorganisms will use one or more of these methods to spread infection, which is why this is a very difficult task. Using multiple methods for affective control will mean that the chances of infection spreading.

Some of these methods can vary, because of the high number of agents out there. Basic measures such as having visitors, staff and patients clean their hands with sterile alcohol solution when entering into the building and in any ward; cleaning each ward and changing bed sheets regularly throughout the day; and disposing waste products regular throughout the day. The problems of hygiene control are that there is no way of finding one uniform method of cleaning; therefore, different measures are used to stay on top of the control procedures.

Control of this level is designed to prevent cross-contamination. This means that complete sterilisation and disinfection of objects and surfaces is vital to prevent this from happening. The problem arises from the different hosts that are susceptible to infection, because they have a low immune system. The only way to resolve this problem is to provide training to healthcare assistants, to better determine who are a likely host and where additional protection is needed.

There are also various different transmissions that need to be considered, such as direct and indirect contact. Direct contact usually means person to person contact for the bacteria and germs to spread. Normal healthcare procedures such as dressing, bathing and using internal devices carry microorganisms that can cause the spreading of infection. Indirect contact can normally be in the form of patients coming into contact with objects or areas that carry infectious organisms.

Other transmission is in the form of droplet transmission which is spread from coughing or sneezing. This is a far more dangerous type of transmission, especially for patients who suffering from a serious and life threatening condition. In this instance healthcare assistants are required to wear a mask around these areas. There is also the risk of patients being infected via inhalation, hence the need to keep these areas extra clean and free from airborne microorganisms.

One On One lessons Vs Online Guitar Lessons

Learning to play the guitar is something that requires plenty of patients, as it would for playing any musical instrument. The first thing one would notice is how much playing a guitar it will hurt the tips of their fingers, some would be put off by this notion, most likely because of the state of which their fingers will end up in after only an hour of practising. There is no trick to overcome this dilemma but to practise, practise and practise some more.

Some may think that taking guitar lessons are expensive. Unfortunately this may be true as one-to-one tuition can cost around twenty to forty pounds per hour, depending on how good the tutor is and the style of music you are learning to play. Those who cannot afford one-to-one tuition can download months or multiple weeks' worth of lessons from dedicated websites that specialise in music lessons. These online guitar lessons calculate to be cheaper than conventional tuition making it much more accessible to young people and providing in depth teaching of the guitar.

Most of the online guitar lessons provide visual lessons so people can see how they can improve upon their techniques. These are filmed at various angles, from front view to close up views for learning where to place fingers on the fret board. Furthermore one can control how many times they go over the same note or technique without having to worry about running out of time or going over the time limit.

When taking these lessons one can also control how long they practise and learn on a daily basis, as well as choose when to take the lessons. They can also control what sections they choose to learn and what areas they would like to recap on. The downside is that there is no one to physical motivate you and praise you on your progress, therefore you will not always be clear on where you are going wrong or where you need to practise. The best way to deal with this is to play in front an expert guitarist and gain their advice. They will naturally know how to correct you and show you what each technique does to the sound of the music.

Most if not all, online guitar lessons are downloadable at a small price. A full package that may typically include 6 hours worth of lessons could cost in the region of 30 pounds. However those who cannot afford to buy any lessons can find lessons available for free, which are usually 5 or 10 minutes long at a time. In this case getting one-to-one tuition will enable you to cram in as much information in the one single hour. For some people this may be too much information in a small space of time, therefore, learning to play in small doses may work out to be favourable for them.

Whatever path one chooses to learn how to play the guitar, one thing to remember is that you may spend a lot of money on lessons but they will need to stay dedicated and focussed on practising to be good at playing. The term practise makes perfect is very true in this instance.

The Role Of The Carbon Footprint Consultant

Getting to know your carbon footprint input can seem like a foreign language to most people, however, others may take the option in discussing how to manage their carbon emissions by going through a consultant. Carbon footprint consultants are commonly hired to go through carbon emissions in large corporate organisations whereby carbon emissions tend to be higher than average household emissions.

Global warming is a subject that many people will be familiar with, even if they are not clued up on what this is about. The government have over the last few years become more public about the issues of global and the impact we have on the earth. Carbon footprint consultants help to determine which areas emit the most carbon gases, how to reduce them effectively without affecting the company's performance and provide advice on long term maintenance plans.

The best way to approach reducing carbon footprint in a business, is to take action on the areas that causes the most amount of carbon emissions and improve the area that is not completely energy efficient. This does not mean that you would not spend out on a lot of money to replace existing equipment for energy efficient, but simple measures such as powering off all machinery or equipment at the end of the night is one way to avoid unnecessary energy consumption.

Carbon footprint consultants work slowly and advise clients to begin cutting out usage on equipment that consumes the most energy. The consultants do not work independently, but as part of a larger organisation that collate evidence from a one day inspection and consultation. They can identify what actions to take immediately and what steps they can continue over a period for effective long term energy consumption maintenance.

The more important things such as air conditioning in the building may not be the ideal thing to have; however, there are other ways of keeping the office cool by creating more space and powering down equipment when necessary. Other steps such as not using radiators and installing underfloor heating are another way of becoming energy efficient. Radiant heating tend to waste heat energy by rising up and becoming trapped by the ceilings.

Having energy efficient business boosts the reputation of the established making it seem like something people would want to be a part of. A lot of offices and corporate buildings have the highest levels of CO2 emissions than households, because of the multiple computers, heating, lighting and cooling systems they have in the building. For this reason consultants work better in changing the impact these companies have on the environment, taking care not to jeopardise the progress of how they are running.

The Importance Of Using A Dissolved Oxygen Analyser In Fish Tanks

The scientific world is never short on impressing us on their wonderful experiments and tricks on finding new information about our human race. One of the things that people with fish tanks will know and use are dissolved oxygen analysers. These measure the amount of dissolved oxygen in liquid and are typically measured in PPM (parts per million). Dissolved oxygen is a process that can happen in fish tanks, which very often can be as a result of algae formation.

A dissolved oxygen analyser can help how much saturated oxygen is in the liquid and help determine how to resolve the problem. Often this can cause harm to humans taking part in diving, resulting in decompression sickness (something divers can commonly suffer from due to a decreased amount of body pressure). Water quality in a fish tank is an extremely important part of keeping fishes safe, but it is also just as important to make sure that there maintains some levels of oxygen dissolving to preserve the nature life in water, because they are kept in an artificial environment.

In addition a Dissolved oxygen analyser can help to measure the water quality and to determine the level of which the oxygen has dissolved in the water. The amount water held by the water is dependent on various factors of the water; this can be in the form of a specific temperature, water pressure and salinity. Gas solubility increase when the water temperature decreases, the same applies to when salinity decreases. More oxygen can be held in cold water, the same applies to freshwater as saltwater cannot hold enough oxygen.

These devices are commonly used for divers in deep sea diving, to enable them to calculate the water pressure and oxygen tank levels needed. These are also used in a lab whereby the analysts can determine the quality of the water before using it on experiments. Dissolved oxygen levels are generally measured in environmental analysis of major river flows and estuaries. All living organisms are dependent on dissolved oxygen levels; however healthy rivers also depend on oxygen levels in the water.

Organic matter can remove oxygen levels; this process is known as aerobic decay. Different fishes can live on varied oxygen levels, for example salmon fish can only live on highly saturated areas, whereas tench and carp are more resistant and can survive on an even tighter level of oxygen supply. Even when no oxygen supply is available in the water, organic matter will still be broken down, in which this process is called anaerobic decay.

It comes as no surprise that external actions can impact the oxygen levels in the river, hence the importance of keeping up to date with the quality of the water using the handy dissolved oxygen analysers. Any unusual or foreign materials present could deplete the oxygen levels, which is why environmentalists take action to even out the levels again.

How To Find Good Caribbean Luxury Hotels

If one was to look at an official statistic of a list of people's favourite holidays, warm sunshine, white soft sandy beaches and warm blue waters will be top of the list. Some areas such as the Mediterranean or Balearic regions are popular destinations for holiday breaks. Most people will know that the sun is very good the skin, health and relaxation. Therefore there is no real excuse to hate the warm temperate climate unless you are sensitive to the sun rays.

Amongst the consistently sunny areas are the Caribbean islands, whereby many who have visited the islands will have experienced the friendly locals welcoming them to try out their exotic cuisines, great music culture and historical spots. One of the main things that have attracted people to visit and revisit the area is the fact that there are a varied number of activities to take part in when visiting any one of the islands. Most people also prefer to at any of the Caribbean luxury hotels because they are much cheaper and offer the same luxurious services as they would in other luxury hotels.

Searching through Caribbean luxury hotels is not as easy as one may think; because different hotels offer different services and no two hotels have the same price. Those who have experienced luxury hotels on any one of the islands will know that each one is themed and tailored to that specific area. For example, some areas of the Caribbean maybe rich with water sports, whereas another island may offer more nightlife and clubbing experience. Therefore one hotel may offer discounts on water sporting activities, whereas the other hotel may only offer recommendations to top restaurants or drinks discounts in nearby club houses.

The only way to find the hotel of your personal preference is to look up as much information as you can on what they can offer, with the added effort of looking for more information about the island. Some islands may have certain rules and regulations, such as greeting people when entering into a shop, or staying out drinking up to a certain time, or they may even be holding a festival event during the time of when you would like to visit. If it is during a festival season, then hotel prices may be raised due to the number of people visiting at the point.

Sometimes one will come across hotels that offer discounts to people who going as a group or offer incentives such as snorkel lessons etc. This is always worth enquiring about, as this might be on offer at certain times of the year and there may be criteria to adhere before applying for these offers.

Always check the location of your hotel, because some a located further away from the main centres. It is always a good to be situated within walking distances of the beach, this will save you money on paying for public transportation and keep you close-by to all local attractions.

Staying in a Caribbean luxury hotel may not necessarily improve your trip, but it will give you the peace of mind of staying in a good location and in neat conditions. A holiday like this is only worth experiencing if one is to go for a minimum of two - three weeks, rather than a weekend!

Top Ideas For Perfect Wedding Gifts

Finding the right wedding gift can be a stressful experience, especially if the wedding ceremony is only a few weeks away. Many people find that just giving cash is the way forward, without consideration into what the couple would like as a long-term token of the guests appreciation for taking part. On the other hand providing cash could be the only means for allowing the couple to choose what they want to spend the money on.

Wedding gifts are an important way of saying how much the day meant for the couple and the guests, making sure that it commemorates the event and is cherished by the newlyweds. Very often one may need to spend a fair amount of money just to find what they feel is the right present. Giving cash in a fancy envelope and a thoughtful wedding card to go with it is usually a good thing to give to relatives or friends - but not necessarily to close relations of close friends.

Giving wedding gifts is something that has been a tradition for many years, as a token of thanks and gratitude for the invitation. The type of present one buys is extremely important in making the right impression to the couple. There are also gifts given between the bride and the groom, which are usually kept low key and special between the two. For the bride the groom can buy jewellery, heart-shaped locket which could hold pictures of the two of you, a gold or silver watch, or some pearled necklaces.

This would be something the groom would have to buy in advance, because aside from the wedding ring, this is the gift that will celebrate the day and will be kept as a commemorative keepsake. For the groom the bride will need to do the same thing, in terms of taking time to find the right present. These presents can be one or more of the following; new watch (gold or silver), engraved jewellery, photograph frame of the new wife's picture or engraved locket. Much of the gifts on wedding days tend to say more about the couples love for each other that words often cannot say.

As a guest at the wedding, if the couple have not registered for a specific list then you have your work cut out for you. The most common type of gift set to buy for a couple is a new dishware or tableware set. These are something that the couple can use, or keep for special occasions. Other common gifts are engraved champagne glasses, crystal photograph frames, engraved jewellery, new cookery set, kitchen equipment, photo albums or gift vouchers at their favourite shop.

For the more wild wedding gifts ideas, parents or close loved ones would opt for buying new furniture, upgrading honeymoon hotel room from standard to first class (the same can be applied to the plane fare tickets), honeymoon tickets (usually a gift from the parents), hamper packages for weekend breaks, comical mantelpiece statuettes, personalised jewellery and accessories, and many more. Picking a gift which is a little more daring depends upon how well you know the couple and how much you can afford to pay for the gift.

If in doubt about what to buy, the best option is to ring the brides or the grooms member of family, to find out what would be the perfect wedding gift, as they may have a list of what they have already been bought.
