The Health Of Household Life

We normally refer to the events of the Srimad Bhagavatam when it comes to instructing ourselves about householder life. There are examples like Kardama Muni and Devahuti, Kashyapa and Aditi, the Pandavas and Draupadi and many more exemplary householders. This is what we call culture. They were successful in their lives. We learn from the way they lived and apply it to our present time, place and circumstance.

Even in the Caitanya Caritamrta, Lord Caitanya never engaged in frivolous activities with His wife. The relationship was serious. Sometimes, depending on the mood and their privacy, there would be some intimate moments. Just like when Lord Caitanya was leaving to take sannyasa, Vishnupriya Devi had an intimate talk with the Lord where she lamented that she would not be able to privately joke and tease the Lord anymore.

For animals there's no difference between indoor and outdoor, it is all the same for them. But for human beings, we don't show our affection in public. Most of us sometimes have a warm relationship with our wives. We may have humorous words and familiar exchanges but respect must be there. We must respect our spouses and properly deal with them, and then we'll make advancement in our spiritual life.

Woman form a class. They all function more or less the same way. We deal with something according to the nature of that thing, not according to our nature. For example, if one gets into a car and tells it to take him somewhere, the car won't respond. One has to turn it on and drive. Similarly with women we have to deal with them according to their nature. We have to respect their opinion, their vision and honor them as a Vaishnavi. This is an opportunity for us to show respect to another devotee.

It is understood that the husband protects the wife, but it is actually vice-versa. She is the one that protects the religious principles of the husband. The latter has so many contacts in the material world when he goes out to work. One of the ways he remains strong is by the protection of the wife, by her shelter. So the protection operates both ways.

Next, they must have deities so that their lives can be centered on Krishna. It is a necessity because the home becomes a temple when the deities are there. When there is no Krishna, then the home is a place for sense gratification. As long as the deities are there, members of the family acknowledge themselves as the Lord's servants.

Next is illicit sex. We all know about it. If people engages in a lot of sex during their youth, when they get old they won't have enough stamina to help their muscles and their body to function properly.

These are all important points we should reflect on and they will help us develop our relationship in a positive way from there.
