The Cure for Recession: Withdraw from Iraq

Cincinnati, OH – Each week as Americans struggle to find money to fill their gas tanks, buy milk, and pay their mortgage – the government is spending $2 billion tax dollars in Iraq. And as the price at the pump goes up, as food takes more and more of a bite out of the budget, and as Americans lose their homes to foreclosure the price tag for this war increases. When adding in the indirect costs, such as long term veteran care, one Nobel Prize winner in economics believes the bill for Iraq will likely surpass $3 trillion.

Dr. Susmit Kumar’s new book “The Modernization of Islam” (www.ModernizationOfIslamBook.com) makes the case that the war in Iraq is draining resources needed here at home. And the battle that is costing American lives will only grow more costly for the American tax payer.

Kumar believes the U.S. may be forced to pull out of the Middle East not because of what is transpiring on the battlefield – but because of what is going on in the homes of middle class Americans. He believes America simply can no longer afford financially to stay.

“We have to leave,” Dr. Kumar powerfully contends. “We cannot do anything more there and it is costing us our people, money and resources.” Dr. Kumar believes the money Americans are hemorrhaging for this war should be spent on Americans or not at all. In fact, saving that $3 trillion a year could make a dent in the growing trade deficit ($700 billion per year) or the $9 trillion dollar debt America owes.

“Because of our huge debt,” Says Dr. Kumar, “OPEC is considering a switch in oil pricing from the dollar to the Euro. If the Euro makes further gains and takes over has the global currency, a potential doomsday scenario could play out for the U.S. economy affecting America’s military might.” If America eventually faces this situation, it would be constrained financially and militarily - leaving Middle Eastern and North African allies even more vulnerable.”

So what is the solution? How can Americans get out of Iraq without letting the region devolve into disaster? How does the U.S. leave to free up the resources we spend there to spend back here, in the homeland?

Dr. Kumar offers an economic solution to that would help not only America, but also those countries struggling so badly financially that their people fall prey to the beliefs of Islamic Extremists. The economic system should increase the purchasing power of individuals, not the gross national product. According to Dr. Kumar, “Developing the home-grown strengths of various societies and their peoples will allow them to participate on a more equal basis in the world to come.”

There is little doubt leaving Iraq now would cause clashing in the short term, and Kumar acknowledges bad days lay ahead for the Middle East, but staying, he insists, would only delay the needed internal battles. “There is not much America can do to stop the rise of Islamic Militancy in Iraq. Unfortunately, the extremists rising to power is a necessary step in the birthing process of democracy.” America’s own democracy, he points out, was won with blood.

And, Kumar contends in “The Modernization of Islam” leaving Iraq now is not just best for Iraq – it’s necessary for America. With the bones of democracy already in place, withdrawing would allow the Iraqis to build a government based on their beliefs, run by them, to benefit them. And leaving Iraq now would allow U.S. tax dollars to work at healing American homes that have been struggling financially partially because of the financial burden of caring for the Iraqis.

By putting tax dollars toward continuing to hold the hands of Iraqis, Kumar implies, not only impedes their progress, but risks America’s own. “What sense does it make to prop up another country – at the cost of ignoring the cracks in the pillars of our own Democracy?”
