Cure For Blushing: Help To Stop You Blushing
Everyone is familiar with the red flush that floods a person’s cheeks in times of embarrassment, nervousness or stress, for example. This blushing is an involuntary phenomenon that can cause annoyance and further embarrassment.
It is commonly believed that it is an overactive sympathetic nervous that causes blushing. This system looks after the organs in our bodies and is responsible for the size of facial blood vessels. When the sympathetic nerves are affected by stress, they make these blood vessels wider, so blood rushes to the face, resulting in a reddened face and other parts of the body such as ears, neck and chest. The problem can be exacerbated by a blushing phobia. Blushing can also be caused by adrenal dysfunction.
How do you recognize blushing? This is characterized by intense reddening, a warm sensation on the affected areas, a feeling of embarrassment, and avoidance of eye contact and strangers who might mock the blushing.
Is blushing psychological or physiological? Really, both kinds of factors are involved. As far as the psychological aspect goes, people blush when they are shamed or criticized. Blushing itself can be the reason for its occurrence. Physiologically speaking, blushing is considered to be an instinctive "fight or flight" reaction, where blood vessels are widened and more blood carried to the face or other area. Blushing is also often accompanied by excessive and inappropriate perspiration.
How to stop blushing? Blushing has been studied extensively, and many cures have been offered, some more effective than others. One former sufferer found the solution in vitamin B, ingesting two tablets on alternate mornings. Strangely, the method was not effective when a vitamin B complex tablet was eaten daily!
A better documented cure for blushing is hypnosis. The trained therapist can conduct sessions in his or her office or the patients can use self-hypnosis CDs or cassettes in the privacy of their own homes. Both methods are useful to help the patient understand his or her reasons for blushing, discover the root of the problem and find out how to stop blushing. This is not an instant cure, and patience and determination is required.
Another effective cure for blushing is surgery. This kind of invasive, cosmetic operation is known as Endoscopic Transthoracic Sympathicotomy (ETS), where blood supply to facial blood vessels is reduced. It’s not considered essential surgery, though, and can prove expensive. Denervation hypersensitivity or increased sensitivity to particular circulating hormones in blood is also possible, and this causes the failure of this surgical procedure.
Before going in for surgery, however, the patient should try medication such as anticholinergic drugs combined with gentle sedatives. Although many patients have tried Biofeedback, it has not been generally effective. A cream called Corium 21 has been found to be helpful by many sufferers.
There are other cures for blushing. Cognitive behavioral therapy has been effective in altering the patient’s reaction to social and other situations that incite blushing. This therapy makes the sufferer comfortable enough in social situations so that the need to blush does not arise.
