Beginning on March 13, 2009, Downtown Austin will be flooded with musicians and film makers from all over the world. There will be over eighty stages for performers to show their talents. It is estimated that there will be over 1,800 musical acts from all genres; most of the conferences will take place at the Austin Convention Center.

In 1994 South by Southwest added film and interactive conferences and since then has become one of the world's premier film festivals, focusing on new directing talent.

Although the convention center will be hosting most of the conference, there will be many venues within walking distance.

South by Southwest helps the Austin economy by bringing in such a large amount of revenue. Much of this revenue is from visitors booking hotel rooms, eating in Austin's restaurants and spending money on souvenirs and the convention itself.

For visitors who would rather not stay in hotels, Austin has several neighborhoods around the downtown area that have rental homes available for the SXSW festival.

Travis Heights is a historical neighborhood is tucked between Interstate 35 and South Congress Avenue and is one of the most sought out neighborhoods for professionals who work downtown. Most of the homes were built in the 1920's and many of these older homes have carriage houses and detached garages that have been turned into apartments. It is also ideal for renters who want easy access to the festival.

Some will continue to play chords primarily and play the rhythm guitar. Some other want to learn improvisation techniques and create guitar solos and become lead guitarist of the band.

When playing solos my experience is that the some of the best guitar lessons is to start of learning the common rules or clichés for solos. With cliché I mean there are some special tone sequences that is widely used by many established artists, and which sounds good and recognizable in the listener ear. Most important at this stage is that you follow some common rules of improvisation, that you choose tones or scale sequences that fits the accompaniment by the other instruments, whether you choose to play a solo based on blues scale or various major or minor scales. At this level You should know the frets quite well, and at least know how to play maybe a scale in at least a couple of positions at the fretboard.

Throughout history of popular music we have had some great pioneer that were able to shock their audience by new revolutionary sound, like Mozart did in his time. From the guitar world you can imagine Chuck Berry BB King, and later Jimi Hendrix who shocked not only audience but also his musical colleagues by his crazy distortion wah wah sound, rhythm, and his ability to use feedback effects or his ability to get maximal effect from the amplifier.

Later on we had the fast Van Halen tapping style and Yngwie Malmsteens inclusion of classical aspects into hard rock, which made him become the pioneer of neoclassical hard rock.

You also find great personalities in other genrés, like Mark Knopfler, Santana, Mike Oldfield all of which managed to ad their own spice and personality to the guitar. Or jazz fusion guitarists like John McLaughlin and Allan Holdsworth.

The common for all those artists is that they had to learn the basics and improvisational clichés first, and from there experiment to find the sound of their own, some by inclusion of aspects from other not western like music, like classical or ethnic folk, or by finding new sequences and use of intervals like for example Eric Johnson. A recent example of this is Beyonce's ‘If I Were A Boy.” Here, Beyonce sings what she would do if she was a boy. “If I were a boy / I think I could understand / How it feels to love a girl / I swear I'd be a better man,” the lyrics go. Other songs have lyrics that are more direct and tackle more serious and mature issues. Nonetheless, the idea of the lyrics of the songs is the same—it wouldn't hurt to be more open regarding these issues. Although they may be against your personal beliefs, it wouldn't hurt to at least listen to the lyrics of these songs.

A song with lyrics similar to Beyonce's is Bonnie Tyler's "If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man)." This 80s song has lyrics that mirror the same sentiments of “If I Were A Boy.” Here, the lyrics say it would be easier to understand what it feels to be a hunter instead of prey (pertaining to the perceived roles of a man and a woman in dating and relationships. The lyrics also suggest that this lack of understanding becomes a wall that holds back their love. “If you were a woman and I was a man / Would it be so hard to understand / That a heart's a heart and we do what we can,” the lyrics claim.

Blur's “Girls & Boys” also acknowledges the blurring of sexual roles and sexual labels. The lyrics of this song go: “Girls who are boys / Who like boys to be girls / Who do boys like they're girls / Who do girls like they're boys /Always should be someone you really love.” However, the lyrics of this song can serve also a satire on the party scene of London.

Apparently, bands and artists from Europe are more provocative when it comes to their song lyrics since a number of bands and artists from Europe tackle such sensitive topics, as well other topics considered as taboo in some countries. These songs are often referred to as show tunes. Although show tunes generally refer to songs from a musical production, this term accurately describe songs from musicals that have become standards. The lyrics of these songs usually do not directly refer to anything related to the musical. For instance, a number of songs from musicals have spoken parts or lyrics where the characters are speaking to each other through song.

With these show tunes, the lyrics of the songs are general yet they still fit in the overall narrative of the production. A notable example here is “Memory” from the musical Cats. Although “Memory” originated from the musical, many people are familiar with it since it was popularly performed by Barbra Streisand. In fact, many people know it as a Barbra Streisand song rather than a show tune.

The “rock opera” Rent also produced a number of show tunes that are still familiar until today. One example of this is “Seasons of Love,” from the second act of the musical. This song is perhaps the most celebrated song from this celebrated musical, and perhaps also the most popular song from any musical.

Les Miserables has also produced a couple of standard show tunes, songs that people hear even until today. These songs include “On My Own” and “One More Day.” Of course, between the two, it is “On My Own” that has become a classic. “On My Own” has lyrics are that are meant to be a classic: “On my own / Pretending he's beside me / All alone / I walk with him 'til morning / Without him, I feel his arms around me / And when I lose my way, I close my eyes and he has found me.”

Show tunes probably won't get the same attention it received years before. Yet there's something about the song that makes it hard to take seriously. The utter seriousness of how this was performed actually makes this song more enjoyable.

There are fun romantic songs to sing too. A favorite is “Get Here” by Oleta Adams. The lyrics of this song have been ridiculed and criticized; a notable example of this is its inclusion in VH1's Worst Romantic Songs list, which included songs by Lionel Ritchie and Meatloaf, among others. Yet this song is easy to sing, and its lyrics somewhat unrealistic but unbelievably romantic and relatable. The part of the lyrics that goes “I don't care how you get, just get here if you can” is its most popular trademark, making it a favorite karaoke song.
