Is Truth Still Stranger Than Fiction?
Who knew there was a statue of John Lennon in Havana, Cuba? Although he never visited Cuba or sang about it, the government unveiled his statue on Dec 8, 2000 - the 20th anniversary of the singer's death. In fact, Fidel Castro, who had said that the Beatles were subversive and that they were a symbol of selfish consumerism, made a surprise appearance at the unveiling of Lennon's cross-legged, bespectacled likeness. Because the spectacles have been stolen twice, four retirees have been hired to protect the statue in 12-hour shifts. Because the guards keep the spectacles in their pocket until a tourist wants to take a picture, it's obvious no one has been able to see a way to permanently attach them.
The U.S. Postal Service saw a way to commemorate Frank Sinatra. On May 13th, the 10th anniversary of the crooner's death, the Post Office released a Frank Sinatra stamp. The image they chose for the stamp was based on a 1950's photo of Frank wearing his trademark fedora and bobbysoxer smile, but the original design was done in reddish brown, sepia tones. Wouldn't you like to know who put their stamp of approval on a stamp that couldn't do justice to "old blue eyes"?
Gary Paul, a noted conservation scientist, has proposed a unique way of doing justice to animals on the verge of extinction. He proposed that we eat them. Because more than 1,000 plants and animals, once commonly eaten in the U.S, are threatened or already extinct, Gary Paul wants to save them by recreating a demand for dishes that are ancestors ate. Although grass-fed bison and Tennessee fainting goat are starting to reappear on dinner tables, it's already too late to have passenger pigeon pie. That's why Gary Paul wants to save our culinary heritage one mouthful at a time.
Because companies want to save themselves, they are monitoring employees' e-mail for everything from proprietary data leaks to cyber slacking. Although E-mail creates an electronic equivalent of DNA evidence, only two states - Connecticut and Delaware - require employees be notified about monitoring. That's why all employees should know even Internet-based e-mail like Yahoo and Hotmail can be recovered and read if it's opened at work. Even deleted e-mail can be recovered forensically. What it comes down to is big brother may be watching so don't write e-mails at work that you wouldn't want your mother to read.
