Usually when we think about a home sustaining water damage we assume that it will first be noticed on the floor somewhere. We might always be on the look out for puddles of water forming around a toilet base or underneath a sink cabinet. Even though the majority of leaks that we find in the home will most likely be in one of these locations, they are not the only ones. Looking above our heads can sometimes reveal damage from water as well.

If you have noticed that you have a water stain on any of your ceilings, it can definitely be cause for alarm. If you have one or more stories in the home and the ceiling stains are on the first floor then it is possible the water is caused by a leaking tub or sink pipe upstairs. You will need to check any plumbing above. If you do not find a leak in the plumbing exactly where the water stain is on the ceiling downstairs, check all the plumbing above. The water could be running down hill from another spot, it does not take much of a slope in flooring to cause this.

If you have ceiling water stains on the top floor or your home only has one floor, then chances are the leaking is coming from the attic. If you have plumbing of some kind in your attic, this could be the source of the leak. If you do not have any attic plumbing, then it is likely that you could have a roofing issue to contend with. This will mean that a roof inspection will have to be done.

It can be difficult to track down exactly where a roof is leaking because even though the leak can be in one spot, the water can run down a rafter or ceiling beam and cause the damage in a different spot on the attic floor or wall. One easier way to locate a roof leaf is to wait until it rains and then go into the attic to look for it. Make sure the attic is well lit so you can see everywhere. After you locate where the leak is inside the attic, then you will have to trace down where the water is getting in from on the outside on the roof.

Roof leaking usually starts because of loose shingles or gutter problems and over time it can find its way into the cracks where the sheets of wood are joined or it can eventually cause a rotten spot to form in wooden roofing panels when it has been allowed to go on long enough. It is better to have roof inspections done occasionally to repair any leaking when it first starts. By the time you notice the ceiling stains, it could have already been going on for a while.
