Seeing your home right after flood damage is one of life's biggest nightmares. To actually see all your hard work and effort soaking wet in muddy and dirty remaining flood water is a major horror. The first thing to do is to calm down. You will not be able to move any further and proceed to restoration if you don't relax. After breathing some good air, that's the time you proceed to your home restoration. Below are helpful restoration tips for everybody's guidance.

1. Appliances - Before you enter a home after flood damage, make sure that electricity to the dwelling has been turned off. Don't ever attempt to test or operate your materials without consulting with your electrician. Some things to bear in mind are the following:
- Recondition or replace your electrical motors.
- Check and clean all electrical wirings. Some may need immediate replacement.
- Before you sanitize your appliance, make sure that its motor is still in safe working condition. Otherwise, consider giving it up.
- Rust can develop easily in a damp environment so consider applying rust inhibitors to appliances with metal parts.

2. Sanitize your freezers and refrigerators. Make sure that insulation is not wet. Otherwise, replacement would be necessary. Remove ice trays and crispers. Wash all shelves thoroughly. Use clean water, a good detergent and rinse with a disinfectant solution. Use hot water and baking soda to wash the interior of your refrigerator including its door and door gasket. Afterwards, leave the door open for about 15 minutes to allow free circulation of air. If musty odor remains, you can place pieces of activated charcoal in a metal container.

3. Have your washing machines and dryers reconditioned. Seek for the services of a professional conservator. Afterwards, proceed to disinfection. First, you need to pour disinfectant to an empty washing machine. Let it stir for about 15 minutes using the hot water setting. Then, unplug the dryer and wipe the drum using a damp cloth dipped in disinfectant solution. Finish off by wiping with a cloth dipped in clear water. Keep your dryer and machine open until all parts are completely dry.

4. Before you restore your furniture, you need to evaluate the flood damage done. Some pieces may not be worth restoring. However unless flood damage is extremely serious, restoration is always possible.
- Don't force wooden doors and drawers to open. You can take off the back part instead to allow air circulation. Opening drawers will be easier after they have been thoroughly dried. Solid wood furniture can be restored by cleaning, drying and re-gluing.
- Upholstered furniture like your couches and sofas have to be carefully evaluated by a professional. These materials are prone to mold contamination. More often than not, replacement is the best option for upholstered furniture.

5. To restore your carpets, you need use to your vacuum cleaner to vacuum off water. Make sure that all remaining water has been completely lifted off from the carpet. After ensuring that the carpet is dry, replace the padding underneath the carpet with a new one. Finally, use a trusted disinfectant to scrub the area of the floor where the carpet was located.

Restoring your home appliances and furniture from flood damage is very important. Bear in mind; however, that your safety remains even more valuable to your family and loved ones so always take the necessary precautions when conducting flood damage home restoration.
