Removing Water Caused By Flood
Floods bring death and destruction everywhere. Coping with such a situation, it is natural to feel stressed out. The first and foremost thing to be done in this event is to perform thorough water removal from our homes as soon as the flood water levels start receding. Only then we can prevent further loss or damage to our house.
We know very well that floods cause water damage not only to our property but can also prove detrimental and hazardous for the health and wellness of our family. So, we must gear up for taking the apt water removal measures to ensure the safety of our house and our family members. The water removal process is going to be a taxing experience for us, but we need to overcome and do the needful to bring the house back to normal as far as possible.
We need to bear a few important pre-requisites in mind before we begin with the process of water removal from our homes which are stated as below:
1. Safety is most important before beginning the water removal process. Be sure to switch off the power of the house from the main point to limit the chances of any possible mishaps. Always wear protective clothing like rubber gloves, rubber boots to minimize the chances of electric shock while you surge ahead with your cleanup process.
2. Keep kids and pets away from the flood affected area as far as possible.
3. It's advisable to analyze and jot down the things that need immediate restoration by taking into consideration their relative value. After making such a list, go ahead to assess the damage and try to save whatever you can to the best of your knowledge and the circumstances.
4. Remove the excess water by mopping and blotting.
5. Take heart to discard or remove the household items that cannot be disinfected and hence unfit for future use. These include things foam or rubber items, stuffed toys, upholstered furniture or mattresses.
6. Help expedite the water removal process by using dehumidifiers and fans as they are most appropriate and handy when you need to control the humidity levels as well as moisture in your flood damaged house.
7. Remove the water from your basement slowly. Draining the water in a hurry could lead to collapsing of the cellar walls and foundation of the house. So, exercise patience to slowly do water removal otherwise, the foundation or the floor may crack or collapse.
8. Start with the attic by replacing the insulation of your entire house as moisture can damage the structure of the house.
9. To get rid of trapped water, try punching small holes in sagging ceilings to ensure the safety of your structure.
10. When working around contaminated floodwater, tetanus shots are highly recommended to ensure the safety of the person involved in water removal of the flood ravaged house.
Following all the steps mentioned above can lead to a successful restoration process of your house while ensuring complete safety for you and your family.
