Protect Against Water Damage While On Vacation
Everyone always looks forward to that week or two each year when they can take off of work and go on a long and much deserved vacation. Sometimes you do not have to go anywhere at all because it is also a great time to just lie around the house and catch up on some things you have been needing to get done or you might just relax and do nothing at all. Of course, it is always good to be able to go away for a vacation too. Sometimes it is great to be able to get out of town all together and do a little traveling and see some new places or just some old ones that you love to revisit when you can.
There is usually a lot to do if you plan to be gone for a week or two on vacation. You might have to put the pets in a kennel or place them with friends or family. You may need to call the post office and have them hold your mail. You usually always want to let a good neighbor know that you are gone so they can keep an eye on the house especially if it looks empty of cars and activity. Something that some people do is to shut off their water supply at the main source and perhaps even the electricity. If you have a home security system, this would likely take care of any fire risk because the system would alert the fire department so there would not be a need to shut off the current, but it is not necessarily so for water.
If you were to have a plumbing break while you were away and no one knew, it cause you untold amounts of damage by the time you got back. In the summer time if there is no cooling going on in the home, water on all your floors would cause hardwood to warp or buckle, carpets would be saturated, sheetrock and wood work along the walls would be saturated and by the time you return, mold will likely have already set in. The way to avoid this is to simply shut off the water supply while you are away. At least this will be one thing you will not have to worry about going wrong during your vacation or the destruction when you get back home.
