Proper Venting Can Save You From Water And Mold Damage

Water is probably the most common cause of damage to a home's structure that there is. Not even house fires can compare to the number of overflowed bathtubs, toilets, and damage to ceilings due to leaking roofs across the country. Other incidents like busted pipes in the winter or leaking water heaters can cause this kind of damage also, so you can imagine all the different ways that water can affect your home. But, what steps can you take to prevent this kind of damage from happening to your home?

One of the most important things that you can do to prevent water damage and mold growth in your home is to make sure that you have a steam vent installed in both your kitchen and your bathroom. This will allow the steam that accumulates from bathing and cooking to be transferred to the outside of the house instead of collecting around the upper walls and ceiling. Your walls and ceiling will absorb this moisture and if not promptly dried out, will cause mold to start growing very soon. An open window can help, but a steam vent located on the ceiling is the best way to help get rid of this excess moisture in these areas of the home.

Water can also do damage to the walls of your basement and your home's foundation if you allow water to settle around the base of your home. This can happen for a number of reasons, but mainly it is because the dirt around your home is not piled at an angle to where the excess rain can run off. Pile more dirt around your home's foundation where puddles of water are forming to make sure that the next time it rains, these puddles do not form again. The water can cause cracks in your home's foundation and in the walls of your basement if it is allowed to continue collecting in these areas.

You should also consider what kind of flooring that you have in your kitchen and bathroom. There are two materials you should never use as flooring in these rooms: hardwood and carpet. Neither of these are good choices for these areas because hardwood will warp if it stays wet and carpet ends up becoming a breeding ground for mold after a while and will stink. You should only put stone, tile, or vinyl flooring in these rooms and make sure that they are sealed tight.
