Preventing Water Damage To The Outside Of Your Home

When most people think of water damage, they think of the water damage that occurs inside a home after a water pipe busts, a bathtub overflows, or some other similar inconvenience. There are a lot of incidents of water damage that happen outside the house, though, and most of the time they are just as easily preventable as the incidents that will happen inside your house. There are a few different things that you need to be aware of when it comes to water damage to the exterior of your home and here are a few ways to prevent them from happening. If you stay vigilant and dedicated to these rules, you should never have to deal with water damage to the exterior of your home.

Your roof should always be properly angled according to where you live. If you live in a snowy climate, your roof should be angled high so the snow will slide off the roof instead of accumulating and causing it to cave in. Not only can it cause your roof to collapse, but when it starts to melt, it will cause the water damage to your roof that you want to avoid. You should never allow snow or other precipitation to accumulate on your roof. Most of you realize how heavy a pile of snow can be, so having a high pitched roof will help combat this problem.

The rain gutters around your home should be big enough to handle the normal amount of rainfall for your area, especially if the rainfall is very heavy. There are rain gutters available for installation that do not allow things such as leaves to clog them up and the best thing to do if you can afford them would be to install these in place of the old gutters that were likely in place when you moved in. Not only that, but the downspout should also extend far enough away from your home to where the water that runs out of it does not settle around your home's foundation.

You should also make sure that your home's foundation does not have areas where puddles of water can build up around it. This can be dealt with by putting more dirt around the base of your home and filling in areas where water accumulates after a heavy rain. Water that accumulates around the foundation of your home can cause cracks and if you have a basement, also cracks in the basement walls.
