Each and every home all over the Western world will have appliances, some more than others but all have labour saving devices that are meant to aid people and keep them warm, cool them down or keep food fresh. Once bought, many appliances are merely run until they break and then discarded without any thought and new appliances bought to replace them. Have you ever thought about the money that you are wasting by running appliances that are not as efficient as they once were?

Take the time to think about the following facts and then see if it is time to change your old appliances for newer, more efficient ones:

-Old refrigerators can use up to 40% more electricity than a new Energy Star refrigerator. All refrigerators with an Energy Star logo on them save at least 20% more electricity than the minimum government guidelines and up to 40% more than refrigerators sold before 2001.

-Freezers that have the Energy Star logo on them will use 20% less electricity than a non starred model.

-When choosing a new refrigerator or freezer make sure that you buy the size that is suitable for your needs, many people choose a refrigerator or freezer that is too big and as a result under fill them. Doing this wastes electricity as they have to work harder to cool down the wasted space inside them.

-Air conditioners that have the Energy Star logo on them will sue up to 10% less electricity than standard air conditioning systems. Many of the newer models also have timers built into them which means that the temperature can be controlled at different times of the day. After all why should you be running your air conditioner at full volume if there is no one in the house between certain hours?

-Energy Star washing machines can save a regular household up to $500 over the course of its lifetime as it will not use as much electricity as an older appliance.

-If your appliances such as washing machines and driers don't have energy saving modes then they will guzzle electricity regardless of load size which is wasteful and will cost you more over the course of a year.

As shown switching your old appliances for newer models that are energy efficient and have the Energy Star logo will save you money over the course of a year and will continue to do so. It pays to have an annual household energy efficiency check to make sure that you are giving yourself and your family the energy savings that you deserve.

Your local HVAC technician can give you the best up to date advice about switching your old appliances and becoming more energy efficient.
