How To Choose The Best Water Removal Tools And Equipment
If you have experienced flooding in your home or are anticipating a major disaster and would like to be prepared for it, you need to have equipment that will allow you to do a good job of water removal when the disaster comes. When a home or building is damaged and water removal becomes necessary, there are several procedures that have to be taken.
Water removal
The level of water in your flooded basement or anywhere in your home is related to the level of damage the water will cause. The more water there is, the more important it becomes for water removal. Any water or moisture left behind will negatively affect your house long after the flood has receded. Moisture can penetrate your walls, wood flooring, carpentry, and cause long term effects on your structure and to your health.
In many cases, you can mitigate the damage on your own with a good vacuum cleaner, or a squeegee for small areas. Industrial level vacuum cleaners are better than the ordinary household ones, and the ones with metal canisters will hold water where the ones with fabric bags will not.
However, no vacuum cleaner built for home use can work as an effective water removal tool for a major flooding. Professional water removal companies use specialized equipment for this.
A pump, such as a sump pump, is something you must have, especially if you experience regular flooding in your basement. In fact, if basement flooding happens often you should consider having a backup pump just in case the first one gives up.
Dehumidification
To more effectively remove any water or moisture that has been left after you vacuumed or pumped the water out, dehumidification is necessary. Any moisture left after the water removal process will continue to cause damage to your home.
A dehumidifier is necessary have in any home, especially for areas that are prone in the house that are prone to high levels of humidity. Your basement, for example, could be a breeding ground for molds if the moisture is not completely eradicated.
The dehumidifier will help to dehumidify the rooms after water removal. It will bring humidity levels down to a level where the microbial organisms will not be able to survive.
Evaporation
Any moisture that wasn't removed by the water removal and dehumidification process can be further removed by evaporation equipment. A fan and an air conditioner are examples of these, and are probably already available in your house. These kinds of equipment are also called air movers. An air mover produces rapid, direct air flow which, when directed on the affected areas, will remove remaining moisture through evaporation. If you are considering buying a fan for home use that can effectively function as an evaporating unit, consider buying an industrial fan instead of a regular one.
Controlling the environment
Effective water removal and drying can only occur if the moisture has been completely removed. You will have to control the moisture and temperature levels in your home. To do this, keep the temperature of your residential dehumidifier to above seventy degrees, and perhaps leave the fan and air conditioner running for longer periods.
Equipment the pros use
Professional water removal companies use very different equipment from what you are likely to have in your house. Specialized equipment allows them to do a faster and more effective job than you can.
If the flooding in your house is major and you know you will not be able to do a good water removal job, it is better to call in a professional right away before the water damage gets worse. Water removal, after a flood, is a crucial step in mitigating damage to your house.
