Hospital Bed Sheet Sets Get Style and Colors
Sales of hospital bed sheet sets are growing. Considered a niche or specialty bedding item, hospital bed sheet sets can be found in more and more homes. For different reasons, more people are choosing long term home care as an alternative to a nursing home. Hospital beds use a mattress that is not a standard size so special sheet sets are needed.
So with hospital beds becoming more common, so is the need for quality hospital bed sheet sets. Given the challenges of caring for someone at home, hospital bed sheet sets must be easy to care for and above all well fitting.
For most of us, hospital bed sheets evoke a collective memory of a crisp white top and bottom sheet with a matching pillow case. Before the introduction of fitted sheets, bottom sheets were always folded under the mattress at the corners. In a hospital setting, the housekeeping staff would change the bed sheets often without moving the patient from the bed. Using what came to be known as hospital corners, the bottom sheet would be folded in a sharp, crisp pleat. Properly folded, the hospital corner method helped to keep the bottom sheet in place.
A properly fitting flat hospital bed sheet was still prone to slip out of place. A loose bed sheet is nothing more than a minor nuisance for most of us, but for a patient confined to a hospital bed, an ill fitting sheet can be far more than just a nuisance. Loose sheet can bunch up, causing pressure points under the weight of the patient. In patients confined to bed for long periods of time, pressure points can at the least be uncomfortable to being the cause of bed sores. If left unresolved, bed sores are a potential serious complication.
The advent of the fitted hospital bed sheet set was an important development in hospital care. A properly made fitted hospital bed sheet hugs the mattress and is more likely to stay in place. Fitted hospital bed sheet sets often include a fitted or pocketed top sheet. Like a properly fitting bottom sheet, a pocketed top sheet provides more foot room and is far likely to slip out of place than a traditional flat sheet. A tight fit and less bunching means greater comfort for the patient and a reduced chance for the development of painful and potentially dangerous bedsores.
With more and more people choosing home care as an alternative care setting to a nursing home, home hospital beds are more common than ever. The need for quality hospital bed sheet sets has grown too. For years, hospital bed sheet sets were once available only in white. Today, quality hospital bed sheets can be found in a wide variety of colors and fabric blends. There is no need to sacrifice style when choosing hospital bed sheet sets.
For most bed sheets and other bed linens, 100 percent cotton is still the most popular choice. Cotton is a reliably durable fabric that is washable and easy to care for. Cotton polyester blend fabrics are another great fabric choice. Polyester is stain resistant and holds its shape and crisp feel through repeated washings.
Avoid buying hospital bed sheets with too low a thread count. Hospital bed sheets with a thread count of at least 150 or higher can provide a high level of long lasting comfort. The thread count of a fabric is measured by the number of threads per square inch of fabric. Spending a little more money for a quality set of bed sheets will pay dividends in the long run, both in savings and comfort.
