If you have had flood damage sometimes it takes quite a while to restore documents and often times the methods for flood damage restoration vary. Documents, books, audio tapes, pictures, and many other items important to you can be freeze dried if they are damp or moderately wet. You can have them dried in a self defrosting blast freezer but that takes the longest time. Books dry better when there is support for the binding so that they don't swell. The best way to have this done after flood damage is to take it to someone or a company who specializes in freeze drying.

After a flood damage you can stick your documents in the freezer, but it is not going to have the same effect. Companies who specialize in document freeze drying have special equipment to aid in the process. The equipment is able to freeze the flood damage documents to -40 Celsius in a quick amount time and this helps reduce swelling and distortion. The flood damage documents need to be dried as quickly as possible to prevent further flood damage. The process, depending upon the amount of flood damage and the equipment used can take anywhere from a few days to many months.

One thing to consider when having your flood damage documents freeze dried is that the papers can stick to each other. Make sure and ask the person who is working on your flood damage documents what methods they use to prevent this. If they say they don't because the process is so quick there is no time for adhesion, I recommend you take your flood damage documents somewhere else. While there is no guarantee that your documents won't stick together, there are methods that can be used to help prevent it and again, the quicker the process is the less likely this will happen.

Your flood damage documents can also be vacuum freeze dried and this is better for bigger volumes of paper like mass documents, coated papers, and books. This makes ice crystals form from the moisture and evaporate, getting rid of all of the moisture and water that is damaging your flood damage items. Apart from flood damage, this is also a good method to use if your documents have been damaged by fire. The process removes soot and other debris and dust from the documents without further adding to the damage.

If you do not understand fully how the flood damage restoration process works or if this is the process for you, make an appointment to go in and talk to the company before you have your flood damage documents freeze dried. The company reps should be more than willing to explain the process to you and help you find the method that will work best for restoring the specific flood damage done to your documents. Each flood damage document is a little different and needs to be handled differently, so talk to the person who will be doing the restoration beforehand.
