Don'T Let Cleaning Up Flood Damage Haunt You
There is a right way and a wrong way to clean up flood damage. The right way is going to help you utilize your home once again. The wrong way will allow you to move back into your home, but you're always going to be reminded of the flood damage whether you know it or not. This is because mold and mildew can be left behind that will grow and make your family ill. That's a couple of the unwelcome gifts left behind by flood damage. Even if it is not evident, flood damage likes to try to haunt you.
So how do you keep flood damage from haunting you? You do it by cleaning it up the right way. How do you clean it up the right way? Check out the ways below:
* Flood damage repair begins by drying the structure. This means opening windows and doors, pumping water from the basement, and taking portable items and moving them outside to dry. Portable items include your furniture and any rugs that may have been on the floor.
* Make sure that you throw away food that has had its fair share of flood damage. You don't want to eat something that has been exposed to floodwaters, especially if those foods are not canned. Canned foods can survive.
* Make sure children's play areas that have experienced flood damage are cleaned thoroughly. Children are especially vulnerable to mold and mildew.
* If any clothes are found to have flood damage, wash them in hot water or have them dry cleaned.
* The water has to be extracted from carpets since you can't remove carpets from your home. Some flood damage professionals may suggest taking up the carpet after extraction and replacing the pad underneath in case the pad has harbored any harmful micro-organisms.
* For important documents that have received flood damage, those can be taken care of later. You can actually put them in the freezer and then carefully clean them up when you have time. Putting them in the freezer keeps things from growing on the paper.
If you find that you're unable to take care of flood damage on your own, you can hire a professional. To save a little money you can do what you can to eliminate the flood damage, but sometimes it takes the professional to really make sure the job is done correctly. There is no shame in that because it is important that flood damage doesn't affect your family for years to come.
So now you know the steps it takes to combat flood damage. It is definitely not something to be taken lightly in any way whatsoever. Flood damage is really serious business, so take care of it that way. The faster you are at getting it taken care of, the better off you and your family are going to be. After all, flood damage is no fun to keep remembering year after year. So better put it behind you, once and for all.
