Do You Need A More Efficient Water Heater

Believe it or not, the amount of hot water that we have to heat and use each day can create up to one quarter of our energy bills. This is because that the old fashioned tank style water heaters we commonly use must keep an entire tank of water heated and ready for use all of the time. When we use part of that hot water, fresh cold water goes into the tank and lowers the temperature and the heating process begins all over again.

This is similar to leaving a light on all the time in case we need to use it later. Even if we are not in the room, it is still on. We all know how energy wasting this would be. The same can be said for continuously heating hot water that is not being used at present. The life span for these types of water heaters are normally about fifteen years, but it can be wise to replace them sooner than that. If it is almost time for your water heater to be replaced, consider a more energy efficient model. They will cost more, but the energy savings over time will be worth the additional cost.

Many people are getting rid of the tank type water heaters all together and are replacing them with water heating units that have no tanks at all. These water heaters do not store the water and only heat the water as it is run through the unit. They are said to help a great deal with the cost of water heating because you are only heating the exact amount that you use while you are using it. It is amazing that it took so long to come up with this wonderful idea.

If you can not afford to invest in a tank free water heater just yet, try a few other simple measures to cut your energy costs. Insulate your hot water pipes for one thing. Use showers more often than baths. Lower the temperature on your current hot water heater to about one hundred and twenty degrees. Teach family members to turn off the water faucet while they are brushing their teeth. These small things will add up eventually.

We must do all we can to not only conserve energy because it costs us so much to pay for it each month, but we need to learn to conserve more of our precious water resources as well. Anything we can do to enhance both of these things will only be to our benefit in the long run.
