Damage Caused By Floods In The United States
Floods continue to be one of the most common hazards in the United States. It can be local or quite large resulting in flood damage extending a couple of states. They usually occur when a dam breaks, or due to severe rains and storms. While some floods develop slowly, we often come across flash floods which occur without any prior signs of rains and are very difficult to predict.
We need to carefully categorize the financial loss in flood damage caused to our homes or property as a result of the floods. It is far easier to find out the damages that are direct in nature, that is to say the damages caused to the property of the owner by taking into account the total loss incurred by flood.
Indirect flood damage that follows as a result of the aftermath of flood are quite difficult to arrive as they are to be calculated taking into account a number of factors including financial loss to businesses, environmental damages, and not to forget the psychological pain and trauma that these natural disasters bring along with them. So, we must study and analyze all these factors before arriving at any results for calculating the exact loss incurred due to floods.
Floods bring with them a tail of flood damage in the form of destruction and misery which affect a great number of people residing in the affected areas. Flooding results in serious health troubles for many people as a result of stagnant water which is a common sign in almost all flood ravaged areas. People get separated from their family members; lose their homes, their belongings, and much more. Waterborne diseases pose a major concern for the people and the administration as sewer system becomes dysfunctional resulting in infections caused by abundance of bacteria and mold.
Floods pose a major threat to the people residing in flood afflicted areas. They can affect a particular area or even an entire city, making life miserable for those affected. The agony and pain that results due to floods is difficult to describe, especially emotional trauma faced by the people. Although help may keep pouring in from government as well as disaster relief agencies, yet these are meager compared with the devastating flood damage caused by the most common natural disaster called flooding. Aid is extended to the sufferers in the form of money or necessities including food, shelter and clothing. The Red Cross continues to don the role of major welfare society for those who need help.
Although floods can occur in any part of the world, it's still advisable to reside in an area which is generally considered safe from the risk of flooding and flood damage. When deciding where to live, one must find out whether the particular city or area is prone to flooding or not by studying the information available on the internet, history of the particular city, and so on. If one cannot avoid moving to a flood prone area, a viable option is to get an insurance cover to adequately cover for flood damage in the near future.
