Flood waters can come at anytime to ruin someone's beloved home and cause too much flood damage. After the water resides, there are a few things that can be done to restore the mess of this natural disaster. One thing to keep in mind is that cleaning flood damage takes time. It may not be possible for things to be back the way it was before the flood took over, but you can revert back to normalcy soon if you take action immediately. As with anything, the more people you have to help, the faster the entire process will go.

Cleaning up flood damage outside of the home can be the easiest. First thing to do is to check that there is no broken underground line. With this intact, we can move on to the rest of the yard. Remove debris and any plants that may have been uprooted by the flood. These plants are damaged and are very hard to bring back to life once they have been out for a while. There will be plenty of water to make landscaping easy.

Cleaning flood damage from the interior can be a little bit tricky. Throw out things that can no longer be used or saved. These are things like random papers and the like that can be replaced easily. A deep cleaning of the walls and floors will have to be in order. Wooden and laminate floors are great for homes in a flood prone area because they can be cleaned very quickly and do not typically hold in any mold or bacteria as carpets do.

In cleaning carpets that went through flood damage can start by drying out the carpet. Large fans and a lot of open doors and windows would help speed up this process. This will bring down the moisture so that mold and bacterial growth is kept to a minimum and helps the machine not to be overloaded when cleaning. Another option is to use a wet shop vacuum or simply replace the carpet altogether.

Baseboards and paint may need to be considered as well. When cleaning flood damage from these areas, find out if they can be just cleaned, if there needs to be painted, or if there needs to be major repairs. Most of the time, cleaning the walls with a cleaning solution and letting it dry overnight would be enough. Come back the next day with primer and the next after that with the actual paint. Baseboards can either be cleaned in the same manner or replaced.

Fabric items can be cleaned according to the manufacturer recommendations. It is a good idea to use color-safe bleach or regular bleach when appropriate. This helps kills bacteria and helps take away foul odors. Upholstery can be cleaned the same way as carpets. You can do this by yourself or hire a professional company if you don't have the time or you feel incompetent for the job. Most rentable carpet cleaners come with an attachment for furniture.

Kitchen items may need to be cleaned in hot soapy water. The use of bleach or disinfectants is also appropriate. Be sure to rescue and metal items as soon as possible to reduce the chances of rust setting in.

Some general guidelines to follow when cleaning flood damage is to try to do all of one task at once. What this means is if you are going to clean the floors, make sure that they are all clean before going onto the next project. This keeps all of the floors clean as you get the rest of the house done. Use clean water and supplies all the time. This prevents contamination and helps reduce the odors as well. Get things dried as fast as possible. You may need to take out the linens from the closet and hang dry outside just so mold doesn't set in while busy with other parts of the house. Staying organized is the easiest way to stay on track with cleaning the house after a flood. Take your time and a clean house will be there soon enough.
