When water damage occurs, recovery will depend very much on the property owner's ability to react with speed. Quick action could mean the difference between a minor repair job and a costly overhaul.

To minimize losses, the first thing to do is to locate the water source so that you can deal with it to prevent further loss. Some of the water sources that could be causing the damage and which you could deal with immediately are, for example, a running tap which you should switch off immediately. Where you think you might be unable to cope with the problem, call for a plumber who should be able to handle major or technically challenging leaks. You should also report the damage to your insurance company.

If it is only part of the house that is affected by the water, you should move your belongings to parts of the house that are not affected. Furniture, documents and household consumables could get completely destroyed by water if urgent action is not taken.

Taking necessary precautions, you should then try to get rid of all standing water. This water is an ideal breeding ground for microorganisms such as bacteria, mold and viruses. The longer the still water stays in your premises, the higher the risk you assume. To remove as much water as possible, mop the affected area using a wet or dry vacuum. The wooden furniture in the house will be damaged by water and so you should wipe away any water on such furniture.

To improve air quality in the house, you should turn the air conditioning on and open the windows. This will help increase drying by releasing trapped moisture. As for artwork and paintings you should remove them from the walls if the walls are affected. Carpets and rugs should be removed from the floor, washed and possibly be disinfected then be hung out to dry. The same should be done for wet upholstery cushions and items of clothing.

For all furniture that is non-plastic, you should place plastic or aluminium foil under the legs to prevent discoloration. If your ceiling is sagging under the weight of water, you could punch tiny holes in it to relieve trapped water - of course you will place a bucket underneath the hole beforehand. A major precaution to take before embarking on all these quick fix exercises is to confirm that your electricity and gas are switched off.

If you live in flood prone area, your losses could be minimized if you purchased adequate insurance cover. While it is not possible to adequately prepare for a flood or hurricane, there are some things that you will need to increase your level of preparedness. Keep yourself updated on flood progress by listening to a handheld radio - make sure it has spare batteries. Keep your cell phones fully charged, and confirm that flashlights are working. Also make sure that you have enough protective clothing and a good supply of bottled water.
