Basic Information about Nausea During Pregnancy
Nausea during pregnancy is normal and is one of the early signs of pregnancy. It is called morning sickness and the strength and duration of it varies from one woman to another. You may be able to handle your nausea while a friend of yours may have a really bad experience being sick and vomiting all the time, or vice versa. Doctors are not quite sure what causes nausea in the early stages of pregnancy, but they do conclude that it is a combination of all the changes the body is going through very quickly and within a short period of time. The body is producing higher levels of regular proteins during this time as well as different ones that are essential for the health of the baby.
Morning sickness can begin within the first month of pregnancy or it may not occur until during the second month. Although it is called morning sickness, this nauseous feeling can occur at any time of the day. Most women report that they are sick as soon as they get up in the morning, which is where the name came from. The nausea can occur for no reason whatsoever or there may be a trigger, which pregnant women soon come to recognize and try to avoid. For example, it is possible that just lifting your head off the pillow very quickly when you awake will bring on a bout of morning sickness. For others it may be the smell of certain foods and it could even be the thought of eating that causes it.
There are no health effects associated with nausea when you are pregnant and there are very few medications that you can safely take for this. For some, it can be really affect their daily lives and result in a lot of time being lost at work. Being sick and vomiting early in the pregnancy does not cause any harm to the baby. However, because you are feeling so sick, you may not be eating properly and it could mean that you actually lose weight during this time instead of gaining weight. Doctors are not really too concerned about losing some weight during the early stages of pregnancy and will check to make sure the baby is developing and growing properly.
Some women do have excessive cases of morning sickness are just not able to keep down any food at all. In this case, not being able to keep any food in the stomach could endanger the pregnancy. It is essential to seek medical help because it could lead to dehydration. In severe cases, pregnant women may have to be hospitalized and require intravenous to make sure their body and the baby get the necessary vitamins and nutrients.
Eating dry crackers as soon as you awake before you get out of bed has proved effective in controlling feelings of nausea the first thing in the morning. You should also get up slowly and take your time while getting ready for work instead of rushing around. Small meals and snacks help stave off feelings of hunger that can cause nausea as well.
