If you are a new mom, a mom to be or are simply helping someone prepare for a new baby, then it is important to know what kind of baby clothes you should have on hand, and how many of each you should keep around. Well, let's start with being realistic about babies: babies are quite messy. As someone online once eloquently put it, babies are genius at springing leaks from both ends. I have fond and vivid memories of my three week old son managing to make such a horrid diaper that the mostly liquid contents soaked through the cloth diaper, out the leg of the cloth diaper cover, through a onesie, a one piece outfit, a receiving blanket and then onto me!

So, considering that you'll be changing a newborn baby's clothing several times each and every single day for quite a few weeks, let's assemble a basic, functional and ready-at-hand wardrobe for you to have in your home. Be prepared for anything, even in the daunting job that is motherhood!

First, consider having several one-piece outfits on hand. These are great for any season, and can be layered or unlayered to match the particular season. Look for zippers or uncomplicated sets of snaps. Snaps may seem easy enough, but think about being sleep deprived and overwhelmed, and suddenly those snaps aren't so easy anymore. Onesies are a must for babies. These go right onto a diapered baby, and underneath all other articles of clothing. These often bear the brunt of messy diapers, so make sure to have at least a dozen of these on hand at any given time.

Pajamas are a must for baby clothing. Pajamas should be soft and made out of cotton. Gowns with snapping or drawstring hems also protect baby feet from getting chilled, and allow for quick and convenient diaper changes when baby is sleeping. Jackets, sweaters and baby bunting are all essentials for baby clothes if you live in cooler weather. Sun hats, caps and winter hats are also considerations for accessories. Let us not forget socks! Like onesies, socks also bear the brunt of messy diapers, leaky bottles, nursing mothers and even spit up. You should have several dozen pairs of socks on hand along with those onesies. Look for ones with loose or no elastic. Opt for white, so that they can be bleached -- and so that they'll match any outfit! Finally, don't forget to pick up a few special outfits to have on hand for holidays, special events and spontaneous photo opportunities.
