The Legal System: After Life of a Convicted Felon
When he was released, everyone told him to get a job and establish a stable life as soon as he possibly could. A job would be the best possible solution for him. It's what they did not tell him that was so crucial to his life and so many others like him.
He started out with the enthusiasm of a small child, eagerly going from place to place submitting applications and in desperate search of a job and some income. He so wanted that normal, stable life everyone told him about. He covered many miles, applied for a wide variety of jobs, and still came up with nothing.
He was not looking for high paying, executive types of jobs, he could not even get hired as a dishwasher or at Goodwill. Some of the people he spoke with about potential employment just said no, while others treated him very badly. They would throw his application in the trash right in front of him or say absolutely no openings for a convicted felon.
It didn't seem to matter that it was a non violent felony, and that so much time had passed. He was scared for life with nowhere to go, no way to make a living or support himself. Today he is a man in his middle fifties, he does whatever odd jobs come his way, and does what he can to make ends meet. He is largely dependent on family and churches for his income.
In related opinion, he has been denied what most people take for granted and that is the ability to get on with his life. He has been denied the ability to earn a living and provide the basic necessities for himself. What a cruel fate for anyone to have to suffer. While attempt to develop articles to highlight this type of legal injustice, to raise awareness and promote equality.
If we wonder why there are so many repeat offenders and why the jails are so overcrowded, all we have to do is drill a little deeper and look at some of the root causes. If we are never allowing offenders the opportunity to support themselves and move on, we are truly the ones who are guilty and should be punished.
The very best gift is that during this lifetime he will be allowed to support himself and move away from the shadow that was cast on him very early in his life.
