Although web advertising is an essential component of promoting any small business, it is not the only method, and not necessarily always the most effective one. Don't make the mistake of ignoring offline advertising by spending too long on your internet marketing and search engine optimization. After all, a banner advertisement can often be forgotten within seconds of leaving the web page or closing down the web browser, but a leaflet that drops through the door, a billboard advert passed every day on the way to work, or a business card on someone's wall can help to get the message across in a different and physical way.

The exact nature of your business will help to dictate the best form of advertising and promotion to take, whether web based or in the real world. The audience you are trying to reach and the sort of message you want to get across will necessarily open up some possibilities whilst closing others. Clearly, if you are a firm of lawyers, then dressing in bunny outfits and handing out baseball caps outside the local supermarket may not be the best plan.

How many advertising methods can you think of? Often business owners think of a small number of web based ideas, and an even more limited number of real world ones. If your ideas of online advertising methods range from banner adverts to PPC, then you're probably going to struggle a little thinking of real world techniques which work well. Not that these web based ones won't succeed, but there is so much more on offer that works better.

All it really takes is a little imagination, and while it wouldn't be recommended to abandon the traditional promotion tactics, it would also not be wise to rely on them alone. Just as with trying to get your website noticed by the search engines, and promoted to the top of the listings, it will be important to promote your business name, brand, image and services in the real world to ensure maximum publicity.

However, offline advertising is not just about reaching out to as many people as possible. You may well have a banner advert listed on ten thousand websites, and it costs relatively little, but reaching out to ten thousand people in the real world would cost a great deal more! Online, you may well accept that a great deal of your advertising will reach people who would never have any interest in your business. After all, spammers tend to target millions of addresses, knowing that 99% of them will have no interest, and simply delete them. Yet to reach 1% of people that might have an interest is enough to make the effort worth it.

In the real world, we can rarely afford to consider such a scenario and it is important to try to reach out and target only those who might very well have an interest in your products and services. The emphasis, then, is on targeting and applicability, or relevance, rather than sheer volumes and numbers.

If you are launching a small business, perhaps a franchise and maybe run from home, then you might wonder what options are available to you. Without a large budget, you'll probably have to ignore the ideas of television and billboards, but these are only used by the large companies that can afford the big scale promotions which will only have a very small percentage success rate in the beginning. You'll need low budget and a high success rate if it is to be worth doing at all.

Another issue easily overlooked is the maximum amount of work you could take on. Depending on the type of business you're running, you may find that you have a maximum capacity in terms of clients, orders or work. A successful advertising campaign that brings in a hundred new orders might seem like good news, but if you can only accept half of them, then not only are you turning away work, but those you have to turn away are unlikely to come back in future.

Therefore, when advertising offline it is important not to exceed your likely capacity, and reach out only to limited numbers at a time, so that you can expand if needed, without running the risk of having to disappoint people.

You may decide to print off leaflets or fliers at home, or have them printed professionally, dropping these through letterboxes or slipping them behind windscreen wipers along the roadside or in a car lot. Perhaps sticking up posters in local takeaways and shop windows might help. But again, think of which shops and locations are most likely to be visited by those who may have an interest in your business.

Offline advertising can reach potential customers that web advertising overlooks. It is be important to think creatively, always keep in mind suitability and relevance, and never to over-stretch yourself in terms of what you can realistically deliver once the orders start to come in.

How to Use Accounting to Identify Business Trends

For any small business, accounting is a critical aspect which needs to be considered right from the very start, and used as a powerful tool to help monitor business trends at regular intervals. All too often beginner entrepreneurs embark on a new business venture, excited by the prospect of shiny new business cards, a flash new website and a slick new name, but overlook the fact that at heart, any successful business needs good, solid accounting practices.

However, there’s no need to be anxious about maintaining accurate financial statements of your business’s cash flow. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to be a monetary genius or have a university degree in order to balance the books. It may well be that in the early days of your small business you have very simple records which need little maintenance... even a spreadsheet will suffice. But even in the larger businesses the maths is pretty much the same. You simply need to know how much is coming in, how much is owed and how much you’ve spent. If you can grasp these three concepts, then you’re well on the way to coping with your accounts.

Of course, if you’re taking other things into account like credit loans and wages then you may find these figures needing to be adjusted, but essentially it’s nothing much more than a pocket calculator and a few minutes can achieve. By all means, employ an accountant, but in most cases this will be either unnecessary or just not financially viable. For a small business, a bookkeeper may be a better option, but it’s also worth investigating the many free accounting software packages available on the internet.

But remember – don’t put this off. You may think that it’s more important to grow the business, design the brand, the products and services, promote it and get the name out there before worrying about the finances. However this will only breed problems for the future. Start proper book keeping immediately and find some accountancy software to use.

However, there is more that keeping regular accounts can do for your business besides showing profit and loss. By analyzing your accounts at the end of each month, it is possible to extrapolate data which suggests trends or patterns. These may, in turn, help you to establish directions, in which the business can be turned to make more profit, adapt its marketing or push in new way. By checking your figures at regular intervals you can identify clients who don’t pay on time, clients who always pay on time, jobs which take in most money, jobs which make very little profits and products or services which are becoming more popular.

Sometimes in the busy day to day rush of keeping the business running, getting the products delivered or the services provided, it can be difficult to stand back and view your business more objectively, understanding how it may be changing, the way in which it is being used and possible ways in which it may be turned to make more profit or work more economically. However, doing this regularly is an excellent idea, because you can pick up on trends very quickly.

Checking your accounting records every day, or even every week, may not provide enough information to reveal a trend. Similarly, looking back over a whole year means that any trends will be drowned by the overwhelming amount of data. But monthly and quarterly accounting checks and statements can certainly produce patterns and reveal a good deal about the viability of your business. They will also help you to implement changes so that by the end of the year you are in a much stronger position, and more aware of the direction your business is taking.

Dragons Den Makes for Compulsive Viewing

In Dragons Den, entrepreneurs get a chance to pitch their idea to five “Dragons”. The “Dragons” are already successful business people that are looking to invest their funds in return for a share of the business and future profits.

In the UK, the programme is shown on the BBC and presented by an economist - Evan Davies. I like the way he introduces the show and his chats with the entrepreneurs after their meeting with the Dragons are very entertaining.

The programme has been hugely successful since it was first shown in 2005. Initially the presenters were Peter Jones, Duncan Bannatyne, Simon Woodroffe, Rachel Elnaugh & Doug Richard. Theo Paphitis took over from Simon Woodruff after series 1. Deborah Meaden took over from Rachel Elnaugh after series 2 had finished. Richard Farleigh replaced Doug Richard in series 3 & 4 and then he was replaced by James Caan.

The current presenters are Peter Jones, Duncan Bannatyne, Theo Paphitis, Deborah Meaden & James Caan. My favourite is Peter closely followed by Duncan and then James.

The format of the programme is that entrepreneurs will stand in front of the 5 Dragons, and present an idea and ask for a specific sum of money in return for a percentage stake in the business. The Dragons will then quiz them and if they like the idea, will make an offer.

Usually what happens is that:

a) The flaws in the idea or business concept is quickly revealed and then discarded

b) The person presenting the idea has little or no knowledge about how a business should be run and is sent home

c) The presentation is good but the idea fails further quizzing

d) The character of the presenter is deemed to be unsound and therefore, irrespective of how good the idea is the Dragons refuse to invest

However, every so often, somebody makes a decent presentation, usually after a shaky start, answers all the questions properly and then either one or more Dragons make an offer. It is then up to the entrepreneur to negotiate the best deal and chose one or more Dragons that (s)he wants to work with.

Sometimes the Dragons demand a higher share then the presenter is willing to give and no deal is done. I have always wondered if they get a second chance away from the limelight to negotiate further.

I believe that the main reason for the success of the programme is that it is highly educational, interesting, full of drama and captures the essence of where the economy is heading.

Many people are either being made redundant or choosing to leave their job and deciding to start their own business. The main reason for starting their own business is the potential for higher rewards. It is almost impossible for “normal” people to make an extraordinary sum of money whilst in employment.

I try and watch the show with my children as I feel that entrepreneurialism is hardly ever taught properly in school and this programme makes up for this. We have learned a lot from the show and the children now have basic knowledge of how to evaluate a business idea and protect it! I highly recommend this show to you.

Entrepreneurs Smash Old Business Prejudices

One of the major advantages of entrepreneurialism is the fact that age is entirely meaningless. It makes no difference whether you are in your teens or twenties, or even retired and well into your sixties or seventies.

In fact, statistically the majority of those who have become successful in business in one form or another are middle aged and older! This is often surprising since many people have a visual image of an entrepreneur as an up and coming youngster just cutting his teeth in the world of business. Older people that are in their forties or beyond have a great deal of life experience upon which to draw on. This experience helps in their journey and allows them to make better, more calculated decisions.

It may well be that the nature of the business is not directly associated with previous career or work experience, but in terms of dealing with people, managing money and planning for the longer term, age definitely helps. Understanding that current events and circumstances may be similar to past experiences, from which possible solutions can be drawn, makes it that much easier to make the right decisions.

A surprising proportion of people feel either undervalued at work, bored, under trained or simply stuck in a dead end job with no real prospects and no foreseeable changes possible. This is a dreadful situation to be in, since if you are unhappy with work, you are unhappy with a significant proportion of your life.

You sleep for about eight hours a day. Since you spend so much of your time in bed, you have probably made sure that the bed is comfortable, clean and warm. If it is uncomfortable so that you spend the whole night tossing and turning, looking forward to the alarm going off so that you can get up, then you're not getting proper rest, and life will feel pretty unbearable.

The same is true for work, since you probably spend about eight hours a day at work. If all you can think about is the end of the day and getting away, or the weekend when you can forget work completely, then you are throwing away a huge chunk of your life. Perhaps launching your own enterprise could offer you a much-needed exciting alternative.

Just imagine taking the eight-hour example above a little further. Imagine looking forward to work like you look forward to going to bed, or imagine wanting to spend that few minutes extra at work in the same way that you probably enjoy those extra few minutes in bed you sometimes manage to get away with? If you can even glimpse such a prospect, then you're already a step nearer understanding how enjoyable life can become when you are truly independent.

The feeling of satisfaction, enjoyment, achievement and general happiness is something that most entrepreneurs would say is their single biggest driving force. The freedom and independence from taking orders, filing reports and clock watching is something that can very quickly become the normal way of life once you have managed to successfully launch your business.

Having said that, the internet has allowed for an explosion in entrepreneurs, with the anonymity and faceless nature of online business allowing many people to trade and work in ways that are entirely accepted, yet would be questioned if attempted on the high street. Most people don't even think about the business owner when they place an online order, but perhaps some people would be a little more doubting if they saw a teenager running a retail store, or even a retired couple selling mobile phones from their living room. Yet, sometimes this is what is actually going on!

Many people have questioned whether entrepreneurialism is about instinct or about knowledge. The answer is that both are needed when it comes to the cut and thrust of the business world. What of those just starting out, perhaps embarking on a new path with little life experience behind them? In many of these cases, it is instinct alone which is governing many of the decisions they make. However, when young people fail, this often proves to be the best education that they have had! They have plenty of time to change tactics and try something different that might work better in the future.

Whether based on instinct or experience, research or gut reaction, it is certainly the case that age, sex, class and race have become utterly meaningless within the world of business. Not only has entrepreneurialism brought job satisfaction and success to many, if has helped to break down old prejudices in ways that have proven impossible in almost every other walk of life.

Cardboard Box Making Machinery

We see so many cardboard boxes every day that we do not really think about how they are being made. But it is also needed to have cardboard box making machines to make those boxes.
As you can imagine, you really need to use different machines if you want to make boxes of different shapes and sizes.

A box making machine can actually work on different kind of material whether you are using something thin or thicker. Those box making machines can do the work really quickly at rates going from about five hundred boxes per hour up to one thousand five hundred per hour. Most of them usually include integrated computer to manage and change settings if necessary. Those computers are very much like any industrial computer as they need to be able to cope with being used for very long hours in a factory with maybe dust. They also tend to be easy to setup and use and one of the best features is the fact that it keeps in memory the previous tasks asked.

But with more and more pressure from environmentalists and the growing demand from some companies, box making companies try to use a much eco friendly paperboard as possible, with now companies offering the possibility to have cardboard boxes made from recycled materials that are also made with clean energy like wind energy for example. As cardboard boxes are usually simply considered as litter, it is important for those companies to show to their clients and the world that they are working in an eco friendly way.

As cardboard boxes are first a packaging solution, it is important that they do not look like a piece of litter. Many box making companies now offer new designs and solutions for more interesting packaging solutions that will be more appealing. It is now very easy to change to colour of the boxes for instance.
It is also important to notice that most boxes you would see or use are actually corrugated boxes. Most people would most commonly call them as being cardboard boxes but cardboard can actually be any heavy paper based board. In most cases, only specialist would use the word corrugated.

Various machines are involved in the making of the cardboard boxes we all know and use. But even if a box looks like a simple thing, it involves complicated techniques and processes that make cardboard box making machinery so interesting.

Underground cables and equipment

You probably do not know this but cables are everywhere. And if you do not see them in the streets it is simply because they have been put underground. It has become more and more popular over the years to burry the electric cables underground rather than let them outside on posts. It is also safer for the people walking in the streets.

But underground cable installation can take a lot of time and be very costly. The first fact is you need a lot of equipment to burry cables. You will need machines like an underground cable winch or cables ploughs, to help you put the cables underground and then cover the trench dug.
The underground cable winch can be a very useful machine to have with you, as it allows you to pull cables and ropes at a very uniform speed and collect it. Depending on what you need to do, you can even just get a portable mini winch that is best used when placed just on a manhole to pull ropes or small cables. Being small and light makes it perfect for small jobs involving only light cables or cables of short length.

But going back to bigger projects, the appropriate machines need to be used.
You obviously need a cable trailer to be able to carry the cables you are going to use. Once again, you can find different cable trailers depending on the length and weight of the cables you need to carry. Those cable trailers are made to be able to cope with heavy loads and outdoor conditions. The chassis and drum frames are usually galvanised to resist longer to the corrosion resulting from the rain for example. Different other features are also included like deflector wings to prevent the mudguard from being damages by posts or any other type of obstacles.

Whatever the case, all people working on such projects should be equipped with the appropriate clothing and tools.
Things like insulating blankets or insulated tools should be used at all time when dealing with electric cables, to make sure the work can be done as safely as possible without endangering anybody’s life. Even if those tools can sometimes cost more than non insulated tools, they are safer to work with when doing work on cables. It is very easy to buy those insulated tools as they can now be found in nearly every specialised shop.

The Dragon and multi millionairess Deborah Meaden has spoken to Management Today about what she looks for in an entrepreneur. Deborah isn’t just a career entrepreneur; she also spends her working life listening to other entrepreneurs, in the Dragons’ Den. So she’s better qualified than most to tell us what makes a good one - and what's guaranteed to raise her hackles.

Deborah is convinced there’s definitely a type: ‘They’re all very different, but there are some key common elements: they’re perceptive, competitive, able to take risks... But good judgement is one of the most important elements. It’s no good getting passionate about the wrong thing.’ No surprise then that common sense is the theme of her new book, which she defines as ‘good judgement without specialist knowledge’.

She is also a big believer in good timing. Not only in terms of whether your business will work in the current climate, but also whether the entrepreneur's personla situation is right. ‘You’ve got to think: am I fighting fit? Am I in a position to give this business what it needs to get it off the ground?’

In her book, Common Sense Rules: What you really need to know about business, Deborah talks about Britain being a nation of ‘potting shed entrepreneurs’. So does she think we’re better inventors than businesspeople? ‘An inventor is someone who’ll think I need something that does that, and I’m going to come up with the answer. The entrepreneur is the person who says, hmm that’s good, I’m going to make that, here’s the market and I’m going to sell it. Sometimes that can be the same person, but it’s quite rare. So a clearer understanding of the difference is very important.’ But she still thinks that British public have some great new ideas: ‘I get sent 100 ideas a week; some of them are crazy, some of them are brilliant. But they’re ideas, and that’s fantastic.’

The good news for entrepreneurs with a workable idea is that they should find plenty of business angels keen to invest, given the relatively measly rate of return they’re getting if they leave their cash in the bank. Since bank loans are hard to come by, it’s perhaps no surprise that business has been brisk in the latest series of Dragons Den (which she's currently filming). ‘I’m seeing better business opportunities than I have for a long time,’ says Deborha.

So what's the key to a successful Den pitch? Well, to impress Deborah, go easy on the snake oil. ‘I don’t like over-slick pitches – what I’m seeing is a good salesman. I’m looking for someone who can convince me that they know so much about their business that there’s not a question I can throw at them that they can’t answer.’ Predictably, that means Deborah is distinctly unimpressed by people who are hazy about their numbers. ‘You don’t have to be brilliant at numbers, but you have to understand the basics, or you won’t have a clue what’s going on in your business.’ And your answer will almost certainly be followed by a prompt and slightly irate: 'I'm out'.

Many people can often find the day to day routine of office life tiresome and somewhat repetitive. It becomes a difficult task to remain motivated and look forward to work in the current economic downturn therefore in many cases people are looking to become independent as they are no longer able to rely on their jobs.

Every day we hear how various companies have gone under and how there was nothing anyone could do to stop it from happening. When you go to work, do you feel paranoid about the possibility of redundancy? If you are made redundant, will you be able to find a job that matches your salary? The general consensus indicates that work is seen as a burden as opposed to a source of fulfilment and productive part of your life.

If you have always wanted to try your hand at running your own business then this may be the perfect time to start. This way, your success and earnings depend entirely on you so you have every reason to inject passion and enthusiasm in your work life. This may seem surprising but starting your own business can actually be stress relieving, as every decision you make will be your own choice and you have nobody else to answer to or worry about.

Starting your own business may seem daunting at first however, if you are to opt for a franchise, the risk is reduced significantly. Certain practices are put in place so it is easy for you to focus on sales and profit as the franchisor will deal with all new developments and marketing methods. Nevertheless, you are still your own boss as you can work at the speed you want to, start and finish at the time you wish to and work in a way which is comfortable for you.

There are a vast range of franchises available especially in current times where people are looking for a solution to eradicate work life stresses. It is definitely worth looking into franchise opportunities particularly if you have a desire for entrepreneurialism but are not willing to go at it completely alone.

For a lot of people, a traditional working environment is no longer appealing due to constant pressures from surrounding colleagues and management that seem to have no end of regular demands. Whatever the reason, you must seriously think about the choices that are available to you and ask yourself why you are considering investing in a business in the first place.

There are plenty of franchises out there it just comes down to finding one that is suitable for you and your personality. If you enjoy being around people in a customer orientated environment you could go for a retail business. On the other hand, if you prefer working alone in a quieter environment, then maybe you should look at online businesses as you can speak with customers by phone and maintain all business transactions from home. Whatever you do, make sure you go for a franchise that is part of a growing market so you have every chance to succeed.

Before choosing the issue your site will address, you need to be aware of the different kinds of sites out there. Almost all membership sites fall into seven basic types.

1. Coaching/Mentoring

This type of site provides help, insight and support to its members regarding a specific topic. A coaching or mentoring site allows the owner to leverage their time. Instead of offering their expertise to one client at a time, they can provide it to hundreds or thousands of clients at the same time.

2. PLR (Private Label Rights)

A PLR site offers a random assortment of articles centered on a key word or idea. The articles you provide through a Private Label Rights site can be legally modified. Many website owners and bloggers subscribe to these services to use the content on their sites or create special reports and e-books out of them.

3. Social Sites

When you think of this type of site you probably think of sites like match. A dating site can also focus on bringing together specialized niches of people like senior citizens, dog lovers, and people from a certain regional area, or just about any lifestyle choice or passion you can think of that would draw people together.

4. Content

This is probably one of the most popular types of membership site. A content site offers its members resources and information centered on a particular topic or problem. Usually the topic is highly specialized and the information it contains cannot be found quickly or easily elsewhere. Members gladly pay a monthly membership fee in order to have this useful information in one, easy to locate place.

5. Paid Newsletter

A newsletter site offers its members exclusive access to news and information relating to a specific topic. Basically, the owner of the site researches and compiles pertinent news stories and data from all sorts of media so that the members don't have to.

6. Message Board or Forum

This type of site requires potential posters (or information seekers) to pay for a membership before they can contribute and/or use certain functions of the forum, such as a search. For can visit to: www.member-site-manager.com creating a viable forum site can be tricky, as it must provide information that can't easily be found on another forum or website for free. They also normally have a very low membership fee.

7. Content Delivered Via Audio

With this type of membership, all of your content is delivered to your members or posted on your site as audio files. I have seen this site model used to offer audio files on a wide variety of topics to be used as additional content on other membership sites - rather like business to business marketing.

You can also combine several of these ideas into one membership site. A content site can also have a member's only forum, and a paid newsletter can feature a monthly audio bonus. The possibilities are endless, and the more you offer your subscribers, the more they will value your service.
