You Can Convert Car To Electric

A little while ago I was interested in how to convert a car to electric. I decided to get online and see what I could figure out.

What I found was that converting your car to electric wasn't as difficult as I once thought. It's actually quite simple actually. All you need is an electric motor, some deep cycle batteries, some electronics, and some assorted nuts and bolts.

I highly recommend getting a friend to help you as it makes the whole process go a lot easier. You know what they say "two heads are better than one". I got one of my buddies to help me and I promised him that I would help him convert his car to electric.

To start out we hoisted the motor and transmission out of the car. It's not really as hard as you think. The motor is only attached to the car by a couple bolts and once they're loose it comes right out.

After we had the motor out it was time to install our electric motor. The motor we had chosen was about 8" long. The recommended size for motors for your electric car is 8" - 12" in length. This will ensure that your car can get up to highway speeds of 60MPH. I managed to use some existing mounts to mount our electric motor to the drive shaft.

The next part was to install all 12 deep cycle 12 volt batteries that we had salvaged from our local golf course. They were all in perfect condition they were just swapped out as regular maintenance. I'm pretty sure that they'll last at least another 5 years. I couldn't quite manage to get them all under the hood so a couple of them had to go in the trunk. I was a bit disappointed that I have less trunk space, but it's not like I regularly fill it up anyways.

The last step was hooking up the electronics. You will need to hook a charge controller up to the batteries so when you plug your car in at night you don't accidentally overcharge them. Overcharging batteries can cause them to explode so this is a critical part. In addition, you'll also need to install something called a potentiometer up between the batteries and the motor. This will need to be hooked up to your gas pedal. Another critical element as this little piece allows you to control how fast you go in the car.

There you have it. I've shown you that even if you only have a little DIY skills you can convert your car to electric.
