The average citizen simply does not have the money to go out and buy a new car every few years. When they buy a car, they hope and plan for it to last them for many years without any problems. With modern advancements that have been made in the automotive industry this is quite possible, providing that the car owner properly maintains and cares for their vehicle both inside and out.

Once of the best ways of course to properly maintain your vehicle is to ensure that you get routine checks and tune ups from a qualified mechanic. If you have not taken your car to a mechanic for a routine check up, you should do so immediately so that they can give it a good once over and look for any problems. Have them perform a thorough tune up that will change necessary fluids and mechanical parts as well as check for any problems that your car may be having.

While you are at your mechanic, get them to give you a crash course in what to look for that could cause problems with your car. Have them instruct you on how to visibly check belts and filters so that you can regularly check your car yourself in between tune ups. If you do not know how to check the fluids in your car, get them to show you how to do this, as well as make sure you know what types of fluids you should be using. Use this information to regularly check under the hood of your car, at least once a week, to ensure that everything is working properly and nothing is on the verge of breaking.

If you want your car to last a long time, you also need to car for the car body itself. Keeping your car clean, both inside and out, is more important than most people realize. Wash and wax your car regularly to help keep rust at bay. Think of rust as cancer for your car. Once it gets it, it is hard to get rid of it. If you do find a rust spot on your car, take it to a body shop as rust can spread quickly and drastically shorten the life of your car. Keeping the inside of your car clean is important as well. Keep seats and carpets clean and free from dirt and damage, which can wear the materials down and cause you to have to replace them.

Properly maintaining your car is not difficult. At most, it may take a few hours a week to ensure that everything on your car is as it should be. And this little bit of time that you take each week will drastically help to increase the life of your car. Providing proper maintenance to your vehicle will save you money in the long run, as you will not have to worry about major repairs occurring from faulty and damaged parts.
